SSS Ranked Awakening: Starting With My Limitless Cosmic Shadow System
Chapter 55 - 0056: Nether Faction
CHAPTER 55: CHAPTER 0056: NETHER FACTION
After Axel left for the forest nearby to hunt wild beasts, Modret remained in the same position as before, deliberating for a few seconds before leaving the corridor.
He walked for some time before settling on the counter.
Standing in front of the counter with a few plates in her hand as she placed them neatly around the area was the enchanting lady from before.
Modret sat down in the front seat, causing her to look up at him.
She frowned briefly as work hadn’t yet commenced for the day; however, she quickly recalled the young man from yesterday who didn’t possess a hint of lust in his eyes as he gazed up at her.
Such men were rare, and Modret was particularly handsome, so he wasn’t someone she could easily forget.
"The name’s Celine," she said, smiling sweetly as she placed the plate in her hand on the counter.
Modret smiled in return, "I’m Modret. I came to ask you about something..."
Seeing that the lady remained silent, Modret continued.
"Is there somewhere I can head to in search of information concerning people with great, evil deeds?"
"To eliminate them," he clarified, noticing her confusion.
Celine looked shocked for a brief instant before she rubbed her chin in thought, ultimately answering.
"That should be the Nether Faction. They are a faction that specialize in hunting people who have done evil, called heretics."
’Heretics?’ Modret lampooned internally, feeling that this was the place he needed to go.
He briefly asked for the location of the place and how to arrive there before bidding Celine farewell.
Celine watched his departing figure, many thoughts going through her mind.
Ultimately, they bubbled up to a few sentences: ’What a remarkable gentleman.’
In her line of work, it was hard to find someone like Modret.
...
After leaving the inn, Modret walked for about fifteen minutes before arriving at a large building.
The building was located at the central part of Velanor city, and going out from it were all sorts of people with varying expressions.
’To think that these people who don’t know much about technology already built something like this!’ Modret was silently amazed.
Masking his shock so as not to seem like an outsider, he continued on his way.
This time there were no guards stationed to guard the massive building.
However, Modret could feel that the moment he stepped into the building a scrutinizing gaze locked onto him.
’Someone at the galaxy core realm?’ Modret raised an eyebrow internally, pretending as though nothing had happened.
The moment he stepped in, his nose caught the scent of fresh mint drifting about in the surroundings.
Up ahead was a polite lady dressed in blue robes that seemed almost similar to suits from Earth.
Modret glanced around and noticed that people with naive looks were approaching the location to get checked.
So, after a momentary deliberation, he walked towards the counter with large strides.
The moment he arrived, the lady raised her gaze to stare at him for a brief moment before speaking politely.
"Welcome to the Nether Faction. Do you wish to register as a hunter?"
"A hunter?" Modret raised his brows in question.
The lady nodded with a professional smile, "Yes, a hunter."
She then began explaining.
"There are three kinds of hunters. One: a hunter specialized in killing wild awakened beasts roaming about the surroundings. Two: a hunter specialized in hunting criminals of the human race."
She paused slightly, letting her words sink in before she continued.
"And finally, the third kind of hunters which has just been recently agreed upon: hunters specialized in clearing celestial gates. However, the procedure to become this kind of hunter is stringent and extremely difficult."
Modret nodded at her precise, almost completely detailed explanation.
’It’s just as I expected, the officials have already begun monopolizing celestial gates a few days after they descended.’
Modret knew that the officials wanted to use all these celestial gates to amass resources; however, he wasn’t concerned about that for now.
It had nothing to do with him.
He replied, "I will like to become a human hunter."
"I see..." The lady nodded, then pulled out a document and recorded Modret’s information, like his badge, age, name, and a few other miscellaneous things.
After he was done, the lady gave him that professional smile once more before speaking.
"The only thing left is a demonstration of strength so we can know what kind of badge to give you."
"Demonstration of strength?" Modret was curious about how this would play out.
Just then, a sharp mocking voice cut through the air.
"What do we have here?" His voice was loud, attracting everyone’s attention to his location.
Modret also shifted his gaze to him only to realize he was pointing at him.
He frowned briefly, then glanced around to confirm it was really him.
Listening closely, he heard a few whispers in the surroundings.
"Isn’t that Raven?"
"Yeah, who’s that unfortunate fellow that is his target this time around?"
"I dunno, and I don’t care much. He should just have his fun and leave the Nether Faction to maintain its peace."
Modret frowned internally, ’Pretty cliché...’
He turned to the lady who had been politely talking to him.
She now wore a stunned expression and a look of pity as she stared at him with a complex mix of emotions.
"Is there any rule against killing people in the Nether Faction?"
The lady seemed stumped by the question but answered subconsciously, "There is a rule; however, one can choose to break the rule on three different occasions."
Modret nodded, already having all the answers he needed.
"Hey, brat, I’m talking to you!" Raven growled loudly, his eyes filled with fury at Modret ignoring him.
Just as he finished speaking, a slithering bolt of light faster than anything the people inside had ever seen appeared at Modret’s fingertips, swiftly heading in his direction.
Raven was horrified; however, he could only widen his eyes as the bolt of lightning pierced through his forehead before disintegrating his body into ashes, leaving everyone stunned.
The room instantly became silent as everyone stared at Modret in terror.
Not caring about the gazes of the crowd, Modret turned his attention back to the registrar, realizing she already had a few badges in her hand and was only waiting for his demonstration of strength.
He smiled warmly, "This should be enough to get me a badge, right?"
The lady recovered from her shock and nodded instantly, quickly giving a professional smile that seemed forced before she made the arrangements for his badge.
She handed him a silver badge and said with a smile, "This is your badge, sir. If you want, you can choose to browse through the section for missions available..."
Modret smiled; that was his reason for coming here anyway.
"I will do just that, lead the way..."
