Chapter 112: Victory and a Rival’s Scorn
CHAPTER 112: VICTORY AND A RIVAL’S SCORN
The air of the Labyrinth of Echoes was cold and tasted of dust and old memories. One moment, they were pushing through a final, shimmering wall of distorted reality.
The next, they were standing under the bright, artificial sun of the Crucible, the colossal space station where the God Games were held. The shift was so sudden that for a second, no one moved.
They just blinked, letting the real light wash over them.
Emma was leaning slightly against Ryan, her face pale. The mental strain of seeing ghosts of her old life had taken a lot out of her. Zara was checking her wrist-mounted datapad, her fingers flying across the screen. Her face was a mask of focus, but Ryan could see the faint tremor in her hands. She was shaken, but she hid it behind her work.
Then there was Chris "Boulder" Magnus. The big, powerful man looked like he had just wrestled a bear and lost. He was breathing heavily, his eyes wide.
Scarlett was the only one who seemed touched but She stood straight and tall, her hand resting near the hilt of her knife. Her eyes weren’t looking at the cheering crowd that was starting to notice them.
They were scanning her team, checking on them. Making sure they were all whole. Her gaze lingered on Ryan for a moment longer, a silent question in her eyes. He gave her a small, tired nod. We’re okay.
A booming voice filled the entire station, echoing from hidden speakers. It was the Prime Warden, the powerful being running the Games. "The first team has emerged from the Labyrinth of Echoes! Champions of the first event, from the dark horse Sector Gamma, led by Sector Lord Ryan Stone!"
Ryan felt a small smile touch his lips. He looked at his team. Emma managed a weak smile back. Zara gave a short, sharp nod, a sign of her approval. Chris just let out a huge sigh of relief and grinned. "Well, I guess that was worth it, then."
A golden, glowing box appeared out of thin air, hovering in front of Ryan. It was about the size of a shoebox and pulsed with a warm, friendly light.
"For their victory," the Prime Warden’s voice announced, "Team Sector Gamma is awarded the ’Cache of Unity’ and one hundred points in the Games standings!"
Ryan reached out and took the box. It was warm to the touch and surprisingly light. He had no idea what a "Cache of Unity" was, but it sounded important. More importantly, they had won.
They had shown everyone that their small, new sector was a force to be reckoned with. He glanced across the arena. Other teams were starting to stumble out of their own exits to the Labyrinth, looking confused and beaten.
One team in particular caught his eye. Lord Valerius and his team from the Technocratic Imperium emerged looking angry and disheveled. Their perfect, crisp uniforms were dirty, and their faces were dark.
Valerius, a man who always looked like he was posing for a statue, had his jaw clenched so tight it looked like it might crack. He saw Ryan holding the golden box, and his eyes narrowed into slits of pure, clear anger.
He didn’t just look defeated; he looked insulted, as if a bug had just beaten him in a race. Ryan met his glare without emotion before turning his back and leading his team away. There was no need for words. The victory was loud enough.
Later, in the champions’ lounge, the mood was much lighter. The lounge was a large, comfortable room with soft chairs and tables laden with strange, colorful drinks and foods from a hundred different sectors. Chris was cautiously poking a blue, wobbly jelly with a fork.
"Are we sure this is food?" he asked, looking at Zara.
"My initial scans indicate it is a gelatin-based lifeform cultured for its high sugar content," Zara said without looking up from her datapad. "It is 98% safe for consumption."
Chris slowly pulled his fork back. "I don’t like that 2%," he said, pushing the plate away. He opted for a simple glass of water instead.
Emma was sitting quietly in a comfortable chair, a warm blanket draped over her shoulders. She was still recovering, but the color was returning to her cheeks.
She watched Ryan, who was standing by the large window that looked out over the vastness of the Crucible. He seemed to be the calm center of their group, the anchor that had held them all together in the Labyrinth. Her respect for him, already high, had grown even more.
Scarlett was not relaxing. She stood near the door, her arms crossed, watching every person who came in or out. She was a quiet shadow, a guardian who never let her guard down. She trusted no one in this place except the people in this room.
Ryan turned from the window. "Good work, everyone," he said, his voice calm and steady. "That was harder than I expected. You all did well."
"We followed your lead," Emma said softly. "You pulled us through."
"We pulled each other through," Ryan corrected her.
The doors to the lounge slid open with a soft hiss. In walked Lord Valerius and his team. They moved like a single, arrogant unit, their uniforms now perfectly clean. Valerius’s eyes immediately found Ryan’s group. He walked over, a fake, cold smile on his face.
"Lord Stone," he said, his voice dripping with scorn. "I must congratulate you. A surprising victory. It seems a trial of messy emotions and foolish memories is perfectly suited to your... rustic team." He made the word ’rustic’ sound like an insult.
Before Ryan could reply, Chris muttered, just loud enough to be heard, "And I guess a trial of not being a jerk was too hard for yours."
Valerius’s smile twitched. He ignored Chris and focused on Zara. "Miss Khan," he said, his tone shifting slightly. "A mind like yours is wasted in such a primitive sector. Imagine what you could accomplish with the resources of my Imperium."
Zara didn’t even look up from her datapad. "I am accomplishing plenty," she said flatly. "I am currently analyzing the failure data from your team’s run in the Labyrinth. It is... extensive. I am learning a lot."
Valerius’s face went from pale to red. He was clearly not used to being talked to like this. He opened his mouth to say something sharp, but the doors hissed open again.
A woman walked in who immediately drew the attention of everyone in the room. She was tall and graceful, with kind eyes and a warm, genuine smile.
She moved with a confidence that was calm, not arrogant. This was Seraphina, the representative from the all-female Outpost, Sanctuary. She was here to watch the Games for her people.
Her eyes scanned the room and landed on Ryan’s group. Her smile widened. She walked right past Lord Valerius as if he were a piece of furniture and stopped in front of Ryan.
"Sector Lord Stone," she said, her voice like warm honey. "On behalf of Matriarch Isabella and all of Sanctuary, I offer my sincerest congratulations. We were all watching. Your leadership was truly inspiring."
"Thank you," Ryan said with a polite nod. "My team deserves all the credit."
"Of course," Seraphina said, but her eyes were still on him. "But a good team needs a good leader. You protected them. It was very noble." She gave him a look that was both respectful and a little bit flirty. It was a look that did not go unnoticed.
From her spot by the door, Scarlett’s arms crossed a little tighter. Her expression didn’t change, but her eyes became sharp, watching the woman with suspicion.
Zara, who had been ignoring Valerius, finally looked up from her screen. She saw the way Seraphina was looking at Ryan, and a small, almost invisible frown line appeared between her eyebrows.
Emma just watched the scene unfold with her usual quiet intelligence. She saw Seraphina’s interest, she saw Scarlett’s protectiveness, and she saw Zara’s confusion.
And she saw Ryan, standing in the middle of it all, a man of great power who was now drawing the attention of powerful women. The games had just begun, but it seemed there was more than one competition already underway.
