Chapter 140: The Precursor Homeworld
CHAPTER 140: THE PRECURSOR HOMEWORLD
The passage through the Gates of Anteverse was a strange, disorienting experience. For a few heart-stopping seconds, the Odyssey was nowhere.
They were not in normal space or a jump corridor; they were in the tunnel between realities. The viewports showed only a perfect, velvet blackness, a silence so profound it felt like the entire universe was holding its breath.
The ship’s systems went quiet, the hum of the engines and the glow of the consoles fading as they passed through the liminal space.
And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, it was over.
Light flooded the bridge. The hum of the ship returned, and the consoles flickered back to life. They had arrived.
A collective, awestruck gasp rippled through the crew. No one spoke. No one moved. They could only stare out the main viewport, their minds struggling to comprehend the breathtaking sight before them.
They were floating in the sky of a world unlike any they had ever seen or imagined. Below them, stretching out to a horizon that seemed impossibly far away, was a city.
But to call it a city felt like calling a star a campfire. It was a single, continuous, continent-sized structure of impossible beauty.
Towers made of what looked like solid, shimmering light reached up into the sky, their tips so high they seemed to scratch the heavens. Graceful, arching bridges of woven crystal connected floating districts that hung in the air like jeweled islands.
Rivers of pure, liquid energy flowed through crystal-lined canals, casting a soft, golden glow on everything. The entire world was silent, clean, and perfectly preserved, bathed in the light of a gentle, artificial sun that hung high in the sky.
There were no signs of decay, no ruins, no dust. It looked as if its inhabitants had just stepped out for a moment, and would be back any second.
"This is... the Precursor Homeworld," Emma whispered, her voice filled with a reverence that bordered on religious awe. "It’s not a ruin. It’s... perfect."
"The energy readings are completely stable," Zara said, her fingers tracing the patterns on her console as if in a daze. "The entire planet, this entire pocket dimension, is being maintained by a single, automated, self-repairing system. The scale of this technology... it’s beyond anything I could have ever conceived."
Their moment of wonder was shattered by a jarring lurch. A loud alarm blared through the ship.
"Report!" Ryan commanded, snapping out of his trance.
"Sir, it’s the Gate!" the pilot shouted. "It’s unstable! That blast from the assassin’s ship must have damaged the portal on its way through!"
On the viewscreen, the swirling black portal they had just passed through was flickering violently. It pulsed once, twice, and then, with a final, silent implosion, it vanished. Their doorway home was gone.
Before anyone could even process what that meant, another alarm went off.
"Proximity alert!" Scarlett said, her voice sharp and steady, her awe already replaced by a warrior’s focus. "Something came through right before the Gate collapsed!"
Far below them, streaking through the silent, crystalline city like a black dart, was the sleek, deadly form of the Void Cutter. It was trailing smoke, one of its sides scarred and damaged from the collapsing portal, but it was functional. The hunter had followed them into their sanctuary.
"He’s here," Chris growled, his hand tightening around his cannon. "That stubborn metal creep is here."
"And we’re trapped in here with him," Emma added, the grim reality of their situation setting in. "We have no way out."
Panic began to bubble just beneath the surface. They were stranded in a lost dimension with a deadly cyborg assassin hunting them.
Ryan’s voice cut through the rising fear, calm and decisive. "We are not trapped. We are on a mission. We came here to find answers, and that is what we are going to do.
The assassin is a problem, but it is a secondary problem. We deal with it, but we do not let it distract us from our primary goal."
He turned to his team, his eyes filled with a new, unshakeable purpose. "We need to split up."
The suggestion was met with immediate protest.
"No!" Scarlett said instantly, her protective instincts flaring. "We don’t split up. Not here. Not with him out there."
"She’s right, Ryan," Emma agreed. "It’s too dangerous."
"It’s the only way," Ryan insisted, his gaze firm. "The assassin will be hunting the Odyssey. It’s a huge, powerful target. If we all stay on board, we’ll be fighting his game. We need to change the rules."
He outlined his plan, his voice leaving no room for argument. "The Precursors built this world. They must have built hangars, repair bays, places to hide a ship.
Emma, Zara, I need the two of you to find one. Take the Odyssey and hide it. Get its systems repaired and find a way to use this city’s own defense network against the assassin. Turn his hunting ground into your trap."
He then turned to Scarlett. "Scarlett, you’re not staying on the ship. You are the only one of us who can match that thing in stealth. While it’s hunting the Odyssey, you will be hunting it.
You are faster, quieter, and you know how to use the shadows. This entire city of light and crystal... it is your new hunting ground."
"And what about you?" Scarlett asked, her voice low and tight with worry. "Where will you be?"
"I’m going to the core," Ryan said. "I’m going to find what we came here for. Oracle. The Core holds all the knowledge of the Precursors.
It has to be at the center of this world. I will go there alone. I will be a small target, hard to find. By the time the assassin realizes we’ve split up, it will be too late. You will have sprung your trap, and I will have the answers we need to fight the Silent King."
It was a risky, daring plan. It required them all to trust each other completely, to work separately but in perfect harmony.
The moment of separation was the hardest part. The team gathered at the main airlock. Emma gave Ryan a quick, worried hug. "Be careful," she whispered. "The data is no good if you’re not here to use it."
Zara just gave him a firm, determined nod. "Find the answers, Ryan. We’ll handle the pest."
Then it was just him and Scarlett. The air between them was thick with unspoken fears. She reached up and adjusted the collar of his cloak, her fingers brushing against his neck.
"This is a stupid plan," she said, her voice rough with emotion.
"It’s the best one we’ve got," he replied softly.
She looked into his eyes, and he saw a world of love and fear swirling there. She leaned in and gave him a long, passionate kiss, a kiss filled with all the urgency and desperation of their situation. It was a kiss that said, Don’t you dare die. Don’t you dare leave me.
When she finally pulled away, her eyes were shining. "Come back to us," she said. It wasn’t a request. It was a command, an order from the deepest part of her soul.
"Always," he promised.
With a final look at his team, Ryan turned and stepped out of the airlock, leaping into the silent, beautiful, and dangerous world of the Precursors.
He was alone, on his way to the heart of a dead civilization, while his friends prepared for a deadly game of cat and mouse in the crystal city above.
