CHAPTER 1138: CHAPTER 1138: RESUMING OLD TRICKS 3

Blood flowed from her hands, staining her blanket and bed red, terrifying her cellmate. Out of humanitarian concern, the prison guards rushed the barely alive Gu En to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment. Fortunately, the timely medical attention saved her life.

Because of this incident, Chen Yun, who was sleeping soundly in the middle of the night, was dragged out of bed. He was absolutely furious. After arranging for four officers to take shifts monitoring Gu En 24/7 while she received treatment at the hospital, he stormed off to Lin Chan’s place in a rage.

"Sleep? Sleep?! Sleep my ass!" Chen Yun’s mood at the moment was like, if I can’t sleep, why the hell should my buddy Lin Chan get to sleep so soundly? So he grabbed some beer, used Lin Chan’s spare key, barged into his house, yanked off Lin Chan’s blanket, and shook him awake from his dreams.

"To hell with you and your ancestors!" Lin Chan, startled, thought his house was being burgled. "What the hell are you doing? Middle of the goddamn night, why aren’t you at home sleeping? And why the beer?"

"Gu En tried to commit suicide in her cell in the middle of the night. I got woken up by this bullshit, had to make a trip to the hospital, and just got back. After all that, I’m wide awake now, so I brought some booze over to drink with you." Without giving Lin Chan a choice, Chen Yun yanked him right out of bed.

The moment Lin Chan heard about Gu En’s suicide attempt, he was instantly alert. "Did it work? When’s the funeral?"

"If she’d actually succeeded, I’d wake the whole damn lot of you up to celebrate!" Chen Yun fumed. If she had really died, would he even be this pissed off? "It’s just the same old trick! Guess she must’ve been bullied too badly in there and came up with this dumb act to buy herself some time. At the hospital, she gets food, drinks, people to wait on her, and even a private room. It’s practically a vacation."

"You think she’s trying to play it as a sob story so the Gu Family will pity her and find a way to get her out?" Lin Chan plopped down on the floor, cracked open a beer, and handed it to Chen Yun. "Gu En’s insanely ruthless to herself. Isn’t she afraid that one of these days she’ll actually end up dead for real? By the way, did you arrange people to watch her at the hospital?"

"You even need to ask? Four officers, two per shift, around the clock! She can’t escape even if she sprouts wings!" Chen Yun smirked smugly. "But I’m pissed anyway. Why didn’t her damn cellmate wait until she was completely dead to discover her suicide and report it? What’s wrong with these people—brains made of tofu or what?"

"It’s a matter of life and death. They’re locked up as it is—they’re naturally scared. Sure, it’s the middle of the night and everyone’s asleep, but if Gu En made even a few whimpering noises, she’d definitely wake someone up."

Gu En’s attempt at suicide only made everyone think of her same old ploy. Last time, Gu En had used this pitiful act to successfully dodge punishment after Chen Yun detained her, which allowed her to enjoy several years of freedom.

The next day, Chen Yun didn’t return to the precinct until after 10 a.m. As soon as he arrived, he overheard his subordinates complaining about how unreasonable the Gu Family was. After asking, he learned that the Gu Family had rushed to the hospital first thing in the morning after hearing about Gu En’s suicide attempt. They had loudly berated the guards stationed there, accusing them of neglecting Gu En and letting her cellmates bully her, which allegedly drove her to such despair.

"Ignore them. Whatever the Gu Family says, treat their words like farts and let them go." Chen Yun consoled his berated subordinates briefly, then went back to his office.

Chen Yun considered the arrangements at the hospital to be solid and didn’t think much more about Gu En’s suicide attempt. He dismissed it as giving her a bit of breathing room. Once the hospital declared her fit to discharge, Gu En would go right back to prison, where her cellmates’ ’hospitality’ awaited her.
