Chapter 12: Promotion
“Hello.”
Lin Mo walked up to the only available counter and greeted the attendant in front of him.
She looked very young, around sixteen or seventeen years old, wearing the association's standard uniform. Her silver-gray medium-length hair was neatly groomed, and she wore a beret on her head. Her appearance was very cute.
“Ah, hello!”
Lena immediately snapped out of her daze and looked at the customer before her.
It was still early morning, less than half an hour since she started work, so she still had plenty of patience. Of course, the most important reason was that her performance in the past two months had been quite poor.
If things continued like this, she wouldn't get a bonus and would have to consider moving to a less desirable place to live, cutting back on food and daily expenses.
So she perked up and looked attentively at the customer.
He had somewhat strange clothing, neat black short hair, and a handsome face with relatively soft features, but his aura was sharp. His eyes were clear and bright, giving no impression of effeminacy, but rather a very sunny demeanor.
An outstanding appearance always made a good first impression. Besides, Lena rarely had the chance to serve customers like this. Most who came to her counter were rough-looking half-orcs or people who chose this line because the others were too long and they couldn't wait.
“May I help you?”
She asked a bit nervously.
“Can I get an adventurer ID here?”
Lin Mo moved his gaze away from the pretty receptionist with some difficulty. To be honest, he didn't understand why this counter was so empty.
Clearly, in his opinion, this receptionist was the prettiest among the five counters.
“Are you looking to register as an adventurer?”
Lena was momentarily stunned, hesitating as she replied, “Of course, but to register as an official adventurer, you need to pay 20 copper coins for the badge-making fee and provide at least five goblin ears as qualification proof. Of course, the association also grants the corresponding bounty reward… at current prices.”
To her, the young and handsome-looking youth before her didn’t look like someone who could produce five goblin ears.
It wasn’t strange that registering as an adventurer had a threshold, and Lin Mo happened to have enough spoils.
He took out five ears from his cloth bag and counted out 20 copper coins stained with some blood, then looked at the surprised girl.
“Sorry, the money is a bit dirty.”
“That’s okay.”
Lena shook her head. After all, dealing with adventurers who went out hunting every day, they were used to this.
“Please wait a moment…”
After counting the coins, she took out a form from the counter. “Please fill out your information.”
Lin Mo glanced at it; it was mostly basic information like name, gender, age, and so on. Besides that, there was a section labeled [Profession].
“Ah, you can leave that blank.”
Seeing Lin Mo's confusion, Lena explained, “If you’re not officially employed, just leave it empty.”
Officially employed adventurers were rare, and most low-level adventurers didn’t have that strength. But since the form couldn’t miss this field, such situations often occurred.
“All done.”
Lin Mo finished filling out the information and handed the form back to the girl.
“Okay, I’ll process your registration now.”
While saying this, the girl entered Lin Mo’s information into the adventurer system constructed by the association’s magical power.
Soon, a staff member came out from backstage holding a black badge and a small cloth pouch.
“This is your adventurer ID, and here is the goblin bounty.”
Lin Mo weighed the pouch. It was light. Opening it, he saw five silver coins lying quietly inside.
As for the badge, Lin Mo picked it up and examined it carefully. It looked like a mass-produced item, nothing special.
Such a badge cost 20 copper coins?
Well, the association wasn’t a charity; it had to make money somehow.
After putting away the badge and silver coins, Lin Mo was about to leave when the girl reached out and grabbed the hem of his clothes.
“Please wait!”
Lin Mo turned his head in confusion. A flash of anxious expression passed over the girl's face.
“Ahem—”
She cleared her throat and returned to her previous polite demeanor.
“This is your first time registering as an adventurer, so the association offers a free adventurer’s handbook. You forgot to take it.”
While speaking, Lena took out a thin booklet from the cabinet next to her.
“Thank you.”
Lin Mo nodded and took the booklet from the girl’s hand.
…
Looking at the girl who still hadn’t let go, Lin Mo asked curiously, “Is there something else?”
“Well, actually… besides this basic handbook, the association also has a more detailed complete adventurer’s guide. Would you like it?”
Seeing her slightly embarrassed expression, Lin Mo immediately understood.
So it was a sales pitch after all.
Honestly, having seen various scam news in his previous life and often bombarded by spam calls, Lin Mo had an instinctive aversion to sales pitches.
But—
The girl blinked her eyes, her tender fingers reluctant to let go of his clothes, looking at him with a hopeful expression. Her gem-like crystal blue eyes were misted with a faint haze…
Damn it, how could anyone refuse this?
After thinking for a moment, since he had just transmigrated here and knew far less about this world than ordinary adventurers, he really did need a guidebook full of information.
“Alright, how much does it cost?”
“Only 30 copper coins!”
Lena’s eyes lit up instantly as she took out a packaged set of booklets from the cabinet. “The content inside is very rich and can answer more than eighty percent of your questions during your rookie period!”
Lin Mo was taken aback. That was expensive.
Thirty copper coins was several days’ income for low-level workers.
The same amount could get him a night at an inn on Flower Cluster Street, including two hearty meals, or three full services from a young and beautiful girl.
But for the slightly socially anxious Lin Mo, who hadn’t had the heart to leave earlier, it was even harder to refuse now. He could only helplessly take out a silver coin from his pouch.
Lena’s eyes brightened, and she accepted the silver coin, then counted out seventy copper coins from the cabinet to give as change.
“Thank you very much for your patronage, meow!”
The girl was in an excellent mood now. Including the badge earlier, she could get a commission of ten copper coins! That was almost a full day’s salary!
The girl, who wanted to cheer wildly with joy, lost herself in the moment, and her tail behind her wagged as well.
Lin Mo was stunned. Only then did he realize that this receptionist of the association was actually a half-orc.
“Ah… sorry!”
Following Lin Mo’s gaze, Lena quickly realized the problem. She hurriedly hid her tail with her hand, lowered her head, and looked a bit guilty, not daring to meet his eyes.
Lin Mo didn’t mind. He waved his hand, holding the newly bought guidebook, and turned to leave.
Lena, however, hung her head, her mood sinking rapidly.
This was over. This customer probably wouldn’t come back to her counter anymore…
