Chapter 15: Task
Page 3 of Roland Town Map Strategy Complete Guide……
Newcomers who have just entered this line of work are always full of anticipation for the upcoming adventures. This feeling is completely understandable, but if you don’t want to become a meal for goblins in their iron pot, it’s best to be well prepared before setting off.
First is food supply. Although you can bring your favorite food, if you don’t want to take up too much space in your backpack, dried bread and smoked meat slices are good choices. You can buy these two types of food in most grocery stores. If you have time and want to pursue better taste, the plump auntie at No. 2 Harvest Street has a great reputation in this regard.
“Bread and smoked meat slices, enough for three days……”
Harvest Street is right next to Copper Hammer Street, conveniently on the way.
Besides food, most other needed supplies can also be purchased here.
He first bought two sets of clothes to replace the blood-stained ones he was wearing.
Then came a simple tent, blanket, water storage bottle, compass, map…… and insect repellent, flint, and bandages.
Unlike yesterday when he was thrown into the outing unprepared, real adventurers rarely return on the same day when executing certain tasks, so they have to consider camping outdoors.
Although Lin Mo, being alone, was unlikely to spend the night in the forest, it’s better to be prepared just in case.
All these items together cost Lin Mo nearly ten silver coins.
Lin Mo counted the things in his hands and bought a larger-capacity backpack to put all the supplies in.
Walking along the road, he continued flipping through the Roland Town Map Strategy Complete Guide in his hand. After the basic strategy, there was more advanced content.
For example, strategies and maintenance tips for armor, introduction to medicines, and recommendations for alchemy shops……
But for now, these were just for reading.
Simply put, neither armor nor medicines were something he could afford at this moment.
Compared to weapons, armor was undoubtedly much more expensive, especially sturdy iron or steel armor, with a whole set costing at least 30 gold!
Even the relatively cheap leather armor started at over 5 gold.
As for various alchemical medicines…… since there was an alchemy shop at the end of Harvest Street, Lin Mo went in to take a look.
The shop owner was a kindly old woman who did not show any disdain despite his poor appearance. Instead, she patiently introduced some of the items in her shop.
Basic health potion, which can quickly stop bleeding, instantly recover light wounds, and relieve serious injuries, costs 15 gold per bottle.
Stone skin potion, which can slightly increase physical resistance for a short time, costs 30 gold per bottle.
Molten protection spray, which can relieve burns on designated areas and grant some fire resistance for a short time, costs 100 gold per bottle.
……
Lin Mo didn’t dare stay too long and quickly left the shop.
These sky-high prices meant that for a long time to come, adventurers like him at the bottom rung had nothing to do with these potions.
It could only be said that alchemists truly deserved their reputation as one of the most prestigious and lucrative professions on the continent.
Having solved the basic supply problem, the next most important and critical step before setting out on an adventure was to find a suitable task.
In fact, adventurers do not make a living merely by hunting monsters. Although they do this most of the time, it is essentially to complete tasks or obtain valuable materials, rather than just for the small encouraging bounties.
Lin Mo returned to the Adventurers’ Association again. The half-orc receptionist lady was still at her post. Unlike other counters with long lines, her counter had noticeably fewer people, mostly fellow half-orcs of the same race.
Lin Mo looked toward the task window beside her.
Hanging at the top was a task marked with three stars.
[Heart of the Crimson Flame]
Task Number: C13
Type: Hunting/Material Collection
Client: Ms. Julian (No. 43 Harvest Street)
Reward: 3000 gold
Task Summary:
A veteran adventurer team discovered traces of the lord-level monster Crimson Flame Tiger King deep within Roland Forest. Please go into the depths of the forest, find and kill this Crimson Flame Tiger King, and bring back its heart.
Note: The task target is for alchemy research. Please bring a magic storage bag to prevent loss of magical power from the item!
“Tsk tsk……”
Though he didn’t know what a lord-level monster was, just by the name, he knew this was definitely not something a newcomer like him could provoke.
This kind of task was just for looking at and fantasizing about, maybe one day he could confidently take down the task sheet and walk proudly to the counter to accept it.
It was worth mentioning that the person who issued this task seemed to be the kindly old woman who ran the alchemy shop he had just visited.
Continuing down, the next task was marked with two stars.
[Silver Mystery]
Task Number: D109
Type: Information Gathering
Client: Anonymous
Reward: 200 gold
Task Summary:
Enter the depths of Roland Forest to investigate the possible existence of Silver Goblins. Bring back corresponding evidence such as skin flakes, excrement, etc., as proof.
Silver Goblins?
Lin Mo recalled the tall and large goblin he encountered yesterday. If he remembered correctly, it was called a mutated goblin, possessing simple speech and decent thinking ability.
It seemed there was a deeper layer of mutation beyond that……
The goblin race was indeed quite peculiar.
Although he was curious why this anonymous task issuer wanted to investigate goblins, Lin Mo obviously wouldn’t dwell on it too much.
Just the six big words “deep in Roland Forest” were enough to dispel any unrealistic ideas.
Task rewards were usually linked to difficulty. No free lunches in the sky. It was better to be practical and start with the simplest tasks……
Lin Mo’s gaze moved down, skipping the one-star tasks, and directly looked at the no-star area.
Compared to the previous two, tasks in this area were obviously much easier. Lin Mo began to seriously consider the reward and content to judge which was more worth taking.
[Emergency Rescue!]
Suddenly, a newly posted task on the wall with a red exclamation mark in the title caught his attention.
Task Number: F2036
Type: Information Gathering/Rescue
Client: Jori
Reward: 10/100 gold
Task Summary:
A caravan from the neighboring town belonging to Jori’s merchant guild failed to arrive on schedule. The guild owner, Jori, suspects they were attacked by monsters. Enter Roland Forest and investigate the caravan’s situation.
Note: The guild owner’s youngest daughter is also traveling with this caravan. If she is safely brought back, the reward will increase to 100 gold!
“Interesting……”
Lin Mo had already seen quite a few tasks.
The rewards for these no-star tasks aimed at new adventurers were mostly single-digit gold coins, with some very simple ones even less than 1 gold. Even slightly harder ones generally offered around 5 to 7 gold.
But this task’s reward was as high as 10 gold, and if the target was brought back safely, it would directly become 100 gold!
For a no-star task, this reward was undoubtedly generous.
Below the task description was the caravan’s planned route map. Lin Mo opened the Roland Forest map he had just bought to take a look. As expected, for safety reasons, the caravan chose a relatively peripheral route. With hired adventurers accompanying, there should normally be no problem.
But now there was a problem……
Lin Mo frowned and thought for a moment, ultimately giving up on taking this task.
This task looked rich in reward but actually concealed danger.
A caravan accompanied by adventurers getting into trouble would not be caused by ordinary monsters like common goblins.
Although he had successfully killed a mutated goblin before, Lin Mo did not think that was due to his own strength.
If the mutated goblin hadn’t been overconfident and disregarded him, fully immersed in the joy of slaughtering Larry and Leo, he might have missed a perfect opportunity to blind its eyes. If not for that, Lin Mo would have been lucky just to escape alive, let alone kill it.
If he encountered another mutated goblin, Lin Mo would only be able to run.
Reality was not a game. Life only happens once, so safety came first.
Lin Mo finally fixed his target on a task to collect medicinal herbs.
[Collect Qingfen Grass]
Task Number: F1933
Type: Material Collection
Client: Albert
Reward: 2 silver per plant
Task Summary:
Go to Roland Forest and collect Qingfen Grass.
The task description was very simple. Below it was a special note on the appearance and common distribution points of Qingfen Grass.
Regarding these, Lin Mo had even more detailed content in his Adventurer’s Guide to Plants (Beginner).
Qingfen Grass was one of the materials used to make healing ointments, considered a relatively common medicinal herb. Because ointments made from Qingfen Grass sold well, demand was high. It was a long-term task and very suitable for novice adventurers.
If lucky, one might not encounter any monsters during the entire process and still earn a decent reward.
Lin Mo noted the task number, glanced at the several busy counters, and without hesitation headed straight for the only quiet counter.
There were only a few adventurers in front, and after waiting two or three minutes, it was Lin Mo’s turn.
“Ah, it’s you……”
Lena immediately recognized this handsome young man who had recently come to her for his adventurer identification card and registered as an adventurer. Her eyes flashed with some surprise.
After successfully selling a set of the Adventurer’s Guide Complete Edition, she had carelessly thought he would never come back to her counter.
“May I help you with something?”
“I want to accept task number F1933.”
“All right, please wait a moment……”
While she processed the paperwork, Lin Mo tilted his head slightly and glanced sideways at her back. Sure enough, he saw that white, fluffy tail.
“Lena, right?”
Lin Mo looked at her work badge on her chest: “Are you a half-orc of the cat race?”
“Eh?”
Lena was momentarily stunned and cautiously looked at his expression before hesitantly nodding: “Yes.”
A catgirl indeed!
Lin Mo was somewhat excited. He quite liked the catgirl element widely seen in various ACG works in his previous life.
He didn’t expect to see the real deal after transmigrating to another world.
Unfortunately, she wore a beret that covered the ears on her head.
“May I ask a somewhat bold question?”
“Please go ahead.”
“Why does it seem like people are not very willing to come to your counter? You’re so cute.”
Cu…cute?!
Lena blinked, momentarily thinking she had misheard.
It was the first time she had heard anyone describe her with such a word, instead of “disgusting” or “gross.”
“Why… of course it’s because I’m a half-orc……”
Lin Mo seemed to understand something and glanced at the bustling hall: “But I see no signs of half-orcs being rejected among adventurers.”
“That’s normal…… Out on adventures, combat power matters most. Half-orc adventurers with orc blood are usually stronger and very reliable teammates, so they’re quite popular.”
So that was it. Other scenes outside adventuring were a different matter.
For example, you wouldn’t care about your coworker’s weight, height, or looks, but after a long day, when soaking your feet to relax, you’d be scrutinizing the technician’s photos.
In short, under the current aesthetic system of this world, the orc features of half-orcs were not accepted by the public and might even cause disgust due to tense relations with orcs.
“Really strange……”
“The strange one is you~”
Lena gradually noticed this adventurer in front of her showed no sign of disgust toward her and spoke more relaxedly.
“Your task information has been registered. Wish you a smooth journey.”
Indeed, the strange one was him.
Lin Mo smiled, said nothing more, waved his hand, and turned to leave.
Having fussed for almost the whole morning, it was already past ten o’clock. Going out at this hour was a bit awkward because he couldn’t go too far before having to return, or it would be dark when he came back.
But Lin Mo didn’t want to waste half a day. According to the Qingfen Grass distribution map recorded in the Adventurer’s Guide to Plants (Beginner), there was a spot quite close to town that he should be able to reach in time.
……
Just as Lin Mo walked out of the association, a four-person adventurer team came in from outside, brushing past him.
“Captain, this time we have to find a task with a higher reward.”
A slender man with crossed arms touched the short knife at his waist as a reminder.
“The last task’s reward wasn’t quite a lot?”
Bern shrugged helplessly, “Isn’t it because you guys spent money without restraint, throwing it around?”
“Can’t help it, Uncle Bern……”
Evan laughed, “After all, weapons need to be replaced. You told us before, weapons are the lifeblood of adventurers and can’t be taken lightly.”
“So did you replace your weapon?”
Bern retorted, and Evan immediately fell silent, scratching his head awkwardly.
“Ha ha ha……” The skinny man dressed as an assassin, Kent, laughed loudly.
The ranger girl Miriam kept her eyes on the new white bow in her hands from beginning to end, as if nothing else existed, constantly stroking it, clearly very fond of it.
