Chapter 70 It’s an Apocalypse
CHAPTER 70: CHAPTER 70 IT’S AN APOCALYPSE
Cao Jingde smiled bitterly: "Originally thought it was just a periodic weakening of the Yang Membrane, but didn’t expect this time the Yang Membrane to break a big hole, leaving the Bianwu army directly facing the Underworld’s impact, unable to attend to anything else."
It’s not just unable to attend; the situation is more serious than Cao Jingde admitted. Although Chentai City is guarded by an absolute master named Li Xiaoguo, for the millions in Chentai City and the Bianwu troops, facing such a natural disaster is utterly hopeless.
Chentai City is doomed!
Even though Lu Ren isn’t native to this world, his expression remains affected. More than a million people in Chentai City are simply abandoned alive.
He stared at Cao Jingde for a long while, squinting and said: "Your courage sure is big, to abandon just like that."
Cao Jingde’s face was full of bitterness: "Sacrificing the small for the big. If Li Xiaoguo wants to survive this Underworld disaster, he must make painful choices."
Lu Ren didn’t say anything more; he has already seen through this world. Underworld spreads across the land, while the Mortal World barely limps on. Perhaps when the Yang Membrane isn’t weak, everything is peaceful, seemingly thriving and extraordinarily prosperous.
But once the Yang Membrane breaks a gap, evil intrigues from the Underworld invade, and ordinary people can only wait for death by chance.
This is an apocalypse, an end times with a facade of prosperity!
For Lu Ren, tangible demon ghosts are easier to deal with, while those energy-like entities, like electromagnetic wave clusters, are the most troublesome. So far, he has no way to tackle these so-called ghostly entities, sometimes even questioning whether he’s affected by some mechanism.
Lu Ren is uncertain; till now, he hasn’t figured out how those non-material demons and monsters are produced.
Relying on fields, electromagnetic waves, or perhaps a cold energy mass?
Lu Ren stopped inquiring more from Cao Jingde, nodding slightly: "Where are we going?"
"The gates of Chentai City are all broken, we can only go to the Inner City; the Governor’s Mansion can hold on."
Fight of trapped beasts?
Upon hearing Cao Jingde’s words, the phrase uncontrollably popped up in Lu Ren’s mind.
The situation has become so serious?
Lu Ren no longer hesitated, quickly following Cao Jingde to the Governor’s Mansion in the center of Chentai City.
Along the way, everywhere were smashed and broken buildings, occasionally seeing houses burst into towering flames.
Thick smoke billowed, corpses scattered everywhere, screams unending, even the drainage ditches on both sides of the street turned blood red.
Brought together by the blood of countless corpses.
Those corpses hardly had intact forms, their wounds dauntingly terrible as if torn and gnawed by ferocious beasts.
Along the way, Lu Ren saw various grotesque corpses everywhere, around the street, inside houses.
He couldn’t help but glance at the Demon Extermination Bureau people, seeing their faces unmoved by the scenes, clearly accustomed to such sights.
Numbness, caused by being overly familiar with such scenes.
Seems this world is truly dangerous.
Cautiously following Cao Jingde and others, twisting left and right through alleys, encountering several dangers midway, Cao Jingde took out a Golden Talisman from his chest to turn dangers into safety.
Each time the air suddenly turned cold, Cao Jingde would immediately pull out the Golden Talisman to circle around, making the abruptly risen chill quickly disappear.
Lu Ren couldn’t help but keep staring at the Golden Talisman in Cao Jingde’s hand.
"What is this?"
"Yang Talisman, created by a top Talisman Master spending a year." Cao Jingde wrapped his clothes tightly, looking at Lu Ren with vigilance.
"What do you intend to do?"
Lu Ren was speechless: "Even if you give it to me, I can’t use it due to lacking Qi and Blood."
Cao Jingde thought similarly, was about to speak when his face suddenly changed, hastily raising his finger to signal silence.
A dozen people tightly leaned against the alley walls, holding their breath in concentration.
Thud! Thud! Thud...
A dull sound of footsteps kept coming, Lu Ren turned his head and saw a thick bronze-colored leg appearing like a towering pillar.
He couldn’t help but look up, seeing a monster with four arms, three eyes, fiery hair, full of fangs, nearly fifteen meters tall passing by.
After the footsteps gradually faded into the distance, Cao Jingde exhaled deeply, full of lingering fear: "Didn’t expect even an Asura to appear, luckily not noticed, otherwise we’d truly be doomed."
"Very powerful?"
Lu Ren turned his head to watch the departing Asura’s back, his face heavy with concern. Though it merely passed by, the pressure it exerted tightly strained him, his muscles tense like steel.
"Very powerful!" Cao Jingde’s face was full of worry: "Even top experts of Black-clothed Envoy level from the Demon Extermination Bureau can’t fight it alone, needing at least two or more to kill it."
Next, the group silently followed the alley, turning several corners safely arriving under the tall courtyard walls.
Cao Jingde said: "This is the City Lord’s Mansion."
Lu Ren looked up at the walls, at least fifteen meters high, engraved with countless runes formed by gathered Yang Qi.
This isn’t the City Lord’s Mansion; it’s like an Inner City’s fortress, occupying a vast space.
Even standing under the wall, Lu Ren felt a scorching atmosphere rushing towards him.
His heart trembled slightly, finally realizing and confirmed upon seeing Cao Jingde communicating with the guards above the city gates.
This Governor’s Mansion must have been built using the Yang Qi gathered from the city’s million inhabitants.
"How many people are in the Governor’s Mansion?" Lu Ren asked a Blue-clothed Envoy beside him.
The Blue-clothed Envoy replied: "In urgency, the Governor has gathered fifty thousand people in the mansion."
At least he has some conscience, but compared to a city of a million, it seems so insignificant.
As Lu Ren pondered, Cao Jingde standing at the gate did something, then waved him over, indicating they could enter.
Lu Ren didn’t hesitate, closely following into the City Lord’s Mansion.
Once the gate closed, the Demon Extermination Bureau members’ tense faces finally relaxed, evidently the environment here providing them great security.
Lu Ren felt nothing much, at most sensing the constant chill had vanished, replaced by liveliness.
Cao Jingde brought Lu Ren into a room, advising him not to wander before he left quickly, apparently assigned tasks upon entry. If not for familiarity with Lu Ren, he wouldn’t personally bring someone over.
These houses are built in quadrangles, rising four floors, each room only thirty square meters, but well-equipped; this area is full of such structures.
Much like single apartments in the real world.
The floors housed many, judging from Lu Ren’s careful listening; everyone here had long breaths, with faint sounds of weapon and fist.
Seems everyone qualified to live here are skilled folk.
Hopefully, they’ll assist if necessary.
In simple terms, they’re all hired muscle.
