Chapter 2373: Chapter 2271: Participants in the Battle
The Battle of Throne does not allow women to participate, so naturally no women from the Windsor Family would go. Peter Brown’s mother and sisters had all come to see Peter off quietly. This was no ordinary struggle for the throne, as it involved matters of death. The Emperor permitted killing during the Battle of Throne and agreed that no investigations would be pursued afterwards. As a result, each Battle of Throne had become an opportunity for noble families to eliminate their opponents.
Mattie Brown walked up to Peter Brown, patted him on the shoulder, and said, “I’m not going to participate. There’s one thing you must be aware of in your heart: people die in the Battle of Throne, and many will die.”
“Aren’t we all nobles? Do we have to slaughter each other?” Peter still asked.
Sighing, Mattie said, “Our Windsor Family has participated in many Battles of Throne, and no fewer than eight people have died. Do you realize how cruel it is?”
After a moment’s silence, he continued, “Noble families are not united. Over time, who hasn’t had some conflicts, and with some instigation from interested parties, the Battle of Throne often turns into a bloody fight.”
Peter Brown no longer needed to ask. He understood the Emperor’s intentions. Throughout history, emperors feared not the civil officials, but the martial generals. The presence of so many martial general families posed a threat to the entire Imperial Dynasty. The primary purpose of this Battle of Throne might very well be to weaken the power of noble families. If some noble families were further instigated with the Emperor’s sanction, it would indeed become a bloodbath.
Seeing the realization in Peter’s eyes, Mattie suddenly felt a pang of regret. He could see that Peter was a person with very high comprehension, a valuable asset for the Windsor Family’s younger generation. What a pity!
With that thought, he said to Peter, “If you can secure a position above Sergeant Major, then don’t push further. Once you’re in the Army, our Windsor Family will assist you, making things easier there.”
Saying this, Peter saw in Mattie’s eyes that he lacked the ability to follow through, merely not wanting Peter to die.
Seeing Mattie’s attitude, Peter’s resentment towards the Windsor Family started to fade.
“I’ll take care of myself.”
Mattie glanced at Danny Walter and Hart Walter beside him, sighed, and said, “You two be careful as well.”
This time, no one from the Windsor Family went to support them. For them, having enough participants to count as fulfilling the task was enough. In everyone’s mind, the possibility of these three surviving was incredibly slim.
An elder from the family looked at all three, sighed, and said, “You three have contributed to the Family. Don’t worry, the Family will surely take care of your family members. You don’t need to worry about things at home.”
Seeing everyone’s expressions, Peter smirked secretly. He did not think he would die. If he couldn’t handle earthly matters like this, then all those years of development would have been for nothing.
At this moment, Hart Walter and another approached Peter again. Both looked at Peter and sighed deeply. Danny Walter said, “Everyone knows our Windsor Family’s situation. Our seniors’ political enemies will definitely use this as an opportunity to eliminate the three of us. No one will allow us to survive; even the family head is reluctant to see us walking towards death!”
As he said this, his demeanor appeared much more dejected.
“Let’s go; we can’t lose our momentum. Since we’re already participating, saying anything more is pointless. Let’s all do our best.”
After Peter said this, he strode forward.
When the two saw Peter exuding such aura, they were both startled and followed behind him.
Riding a warhorse, Peter adjusted himself, and the horse also submitted to him. Holding a large knife, Peter headed toward the Martial Arts Arena.
Upon arriving at the Martial Arts Arena in the west of the city, Peter saw that it was filled with Army soldiers, layer upon layer, and each family had its designated position.
The Windsor Family did not have the family head present; instead, a family elder led the team.
It was clear that this was the same for other families as well.
In such circumstances, if the family heads weren’t completely confident of victory, nobody was willing to come.
The Emperor hadn’t come either, only sending the minister of war.
After the Imperial Counselor spoke for a while, the entire Battle of Throne began.
At this moment, a General shouted, “Do you see, the Stage is filled with positions of every rank. Which position you can take is up to you. Go and fight for it.”
Everyone looked and indeed saw a large chair at the top and rows of chairs placed below.
The General said, looking loudly at the tens of thousands below, “You are all from military families, besides the noble families from the Capital City, there are also offspring from various military Generals. You will all compete on the same stage. You can compete for any position or challenge any chair. The entire competition lasts one week; during this time, life and death do not matter, and after the competition, no revenge is permitted!”
Peter also looked over at the crowd. He previously thought only Capital City’s nobility participated, but now realized the Emperor had issued an Imperial Edict that greatly expanded the scope of participants, allowing military General family offspring to compete as well, giving everyone a chance for advancement.
Because of this very Imperial Edict, many had come, and there were many experts in attendance.
The previous guardian of Peter’s body always played by himself, losing consciousness occasionally, waking up to continue his own endeavors, naturally unaware of such a massive Battle of Throne occurring. Now, seeing so many experts arriving, Peter was somewhat surprised. Looking at the sons of the Capital’s notable families, it was evident their expressions had changed drastically.
Turning to look at the two Windsor Family participants beside him, Peter found they looked on the verge of fainting, their faces pale as they sat on horseback.
Shaking his head, Peter also doubted if they had any chance of survival. In a place like this, fighting desperately, even he didn’t have the power to protect both. Besides, he had no intention of protecting others.
Unable to use Divine Sense, Peter could only glance at the crowd with his eyes, trying to spot any particularly formidable individuals.
The war drums continued to beat, and the entire Martial Arts Arena was steeped in an atmosphere of tension.
