Chapter 2479: Chapter 2469 Chu Lu
Long Yan contemplated a solution, but the elderly man had long seen through his thoughts. After taking a sip of fragrant tea, he placed the cup on the table and spoke.
“The idea of mobilizing the Orthodoxy had been considered long ago, but over such a long time, not even a trace of experiment, let alone a disciple, has been left by the Ten Thousand Beasts Sect.”
After speaking, the elderly man shook his head lightly, looking somewhat regretful. The Ten Thousand Beasts Sect was a terrifying opponent, and the terrifying part was not just the madness of such experiments, but more so their ability to conduct them without leaving a single clue. This was indeed quite frightening.
“If there’s no clue, then lure one out.”
“Oh?”
The elderly man looked at Long Yan’s confident gaze with some surprise, letting out a doubtful noise. It seemed Long Yan had a way to tackle this difficult problem.
Long Yan hung the Earth-level mercenary identity card around his neck and, from a high vantage point, watching Long Yan depart, the elderly man smiled wryly. It seemed he was indeed old, having not thought of such a simple method; youth truly had its advantages.
“Hey, brother.”
Just as Long Yan stepped out from the mercenary guild’s gate, he saw four people blocking the entrance. These places were generally where people sought members for mercenary groups, and it was a burly man in the crowd who called out to Long Yan.
“Oh?”
Turning his body, Long Yan faced the burly man dressed in coarse cloth clothing, with patches on it, a greatsword slung across his waist. His forearms bulged with muscles, full of strength. With it being a hot day, his coarse clothing was already soaked with sweat. He was wiping his forehead’s sweat while running towards Long Yan.
This made Long Yan feel a bit strange. Generally, mercenary groups would not recruit people at noon, when it was hottest. After all, in such heat, mercenaries rarely came out when they could drink chilled wine with ice cubes in the guild for just a couple of silver pieces until full.
“Let me introduce myself, I am Chu Lu, an Earth-level mercenary.”
Chu Lu said while lifting his Earth-level mercenary identity card in front of Long Yan, signalling. Now knowing he wasn’t some suspicious person, Long Yan paused and looked at Chu Lu before him.
“Is there something you need?”
“Could you be Long Yan?”
Wiping the sweat flowing down his forehead, Chu Lu cautiously asked a question.
Speaking of Chu Lu, nearly half of the mercenaries in the small town knew this name. Although he looked unremarkable, Chu Lu was a leading Earth-level mercenary in the small town. Of course, he was famous not due to completed tasks but because his four-member mercenary team completed a Heavenly Level task.
And it was a Heavenly Level team task. The team tasks were specifically assigned to mercenary teams, and Chu Lu, relying on his team members, completed a Heavenly Level team task, which instantly made Chu Lu famous.
“Actually, my purpose today is to invite you to join my mercenary group.”
“Hmm?”
In fact, Chu Lu’s fame didn’t really matter to Long Yan, but a mercenary group could have as many as ten members, yet Chu Lu’s group only had four, not even the minimum five typical for a mercenary group. Maintaining as such was a kind of miracle.
“Why invite me?”
Long Yan was curious. Although he might be famous now, those mercenaries shouldn’t know his name, so how did Chu Lu know. However, he wasn’t foolish and understood the underlying meaning in Long Yan’s words.
“Um… my sister is a receptionist in the mercenary guild.”
“I see.”
Upon hearing this, Long Yan looked at the burly man blushing in front of him and softly uttered these words. It was somewhat embarrassing for a man to admit he got information from his sister.
“We’ve taken on a heavenly level task this time; Brother Long Yan might gain another promotion from this task.”
“Alright, I’ll join.”
Long Yan didn’t think much; while talking with the burly man, he sensed the other side was straightforward and truthful, with no ill intent towards Long Yan. Long Yan found it pleasant to interact with such people.
Previously, the plan he researched with the elderly man could commence only once Long Yan attained the status of Heavenly Level mercenary. Long Yan and the elderly man had an agreement, and in reality, Long Yan had completed his assessment. For each step of the three-step assessment, Long Yan had achieved the standards. With enough task completion, Long Yan could readily achieve the Heavenly Level mercenary status.
“Our group members are over there; I’ll introduce you.”
Long Yan gestured, indicating for Chu Lu to lead the way, and he followed behind Chu Lu toward a shady spot. It seemed Chu Lu had all the members wait here, while he waited for Long Yan in the sunlight, indicating he was quite a good leader.
Once there, four individuals sat in the shade, two women and two men. Long Yan couldn’t help but grin, finding the gender balance equal, though he was about to disrupt it.
“Long Yan is here.”
In an instant, three heads turned synchronously towards Long Yan. Chu Meng carefully observed Long Yan, trying to see what traits so endeared him to their leader, who insisted on recruiting him, but Chu Meng was somewhat disappointed. She didn’t see anything particularly praiseworthy about the young man.
Aside from Long Yan’s handsome and fair face, looks were the least useful trait in the Demon Beast Mountain Range since every other advantage might save one’s life, but facial appeal held no such power.
Glancing at Long Yan quickly, they lowered their heads again, showing little interest in talking to him. To them, Long Yan might have charmed the leader’s sister with his looks simply to join their mercenary group to enhance his reputation.
With years in the mercenary world, Chu Lu knew his members weren’t friendly to newcomers like Long Yan, but only awkwardly smiled, uncertain of what to say.
In truth, they weren’t concerned about such matters, having long become accustomed to life-or-death situations together over time. However, they were annoyed their straightforward leader would concoct lies about Long Yan meeting Heavenly Level mercenary standards, for how could such slender arms and legs be possible.
“Let me introduce: Chu Meng, Zhu Ying, Tian Luo Yi. We’re all brothers now.”
Zhu Ying had an ordinary appearance. The typical mercenary light armor and slightly wrinkled armor skirt complemented her valiant demeanor.
Tian Luo Yi, with black hair, leaned on the stair direction, toying with a dagger, indifferent to Long Yan.
Lastly, there was Chu Meng. Though clad in plain white clothes, it highlighted her exceptional beauty. Her healthy, tanned skin and untamed aura would drive most men wild.
Just after Long Yan finished observing the three, a discordant voice arose.
“Boss, I oppose his joining.”
