Chapter 1485: Chapter 1112: Really Allergic

After Lucas was transferred back to the regular ward, there were no more allergy incidents. He secretly rejoiced, thinking he had finally conquered peanut butter in this lifetime.

In recent days, Yang Ping had been busy researching tumor treatments and completely forgot about Lucas. A few days later, another call came from the International Medical Center to the doctor’s office at the Foreign Research Institute. They said Lucas had been sent to the ICU and was currently under emergency rescue, requesting an urgent consultation with Professor Yang Ping.

At this time, Yang Ping was on the operating table. The call was answered by the graduate student Xiao Luo, who had previously accompanied Yang Ping for consultations. After hanging up, Xiao Luo complained, “Another urgent consultation. Last time, we went for nothing; there was nothing wrong. He just lay there, batting those big eyes, waiting for an allergy to happen. I guess it’s the same this time.”

Xiao Luo, a newly arrived standardized training student rotating through the department, checked the time. Professor Yang was currently in surgery, and he felt embarrassed to call the operating room at this moment. Thinking there wasn’t any big deal, and having experience from last time, Xiao Luo felt assured. He decided to wait until Professor Yang finished the surgery before informing him.

Just then, Zhang Lin came in and overheard Xiao Luo’s muttering and asked, “Where’s the consultation request from? Urgent consultation?”

“The International Medical Center is requesting an urgent consultation. It mustn’t be urgent. It’s that same Lucas; we were tricked last time.” Xiao Luo explained.

“Do you not know that an urgent consultation requires you to arrive on-site within 10 minutes? Do you know the eighteen core protocols? Can you judge how critical the situation is from here?” Zhang Lin’s anger flared up when he heard this, and he scolded the graduate student. The graduate student was resentful but didn’t dare to say anything, only keeping his dissatisfaction to himself.

After scolding, Zhang Lin snapped, “Follow me for the consultation, and move quickly.”

Since they were requesting Professor Yang, Zhang Lin, on his way to the International Medical Center, immediately called Yang Ping to report, then hurried to the ICU at the International Medical Center. Upon entering the ICU, the doctors involved in the rescue had already performed a tracheostomy on Lucas because severe laryngeal edema had led to breathing difficulties, necessitating a tracheostomy to open the airway.

“Teacher Zhang, Lucas suddenly went into anaphylactic shock. His family said he just ate peanut butter,” the ICU doctor immediately reported.

Adrenaline and other rescue medications, airway opening, infusion, and volume expansion treatments were all arranged promptly. It was even set up in the regular ward, making the rescue very timely.

Following Zhang Lin, the graduate student Xiao Luo broke out in a cold sweat. The wolf had come—the wolf really had come this time. Luckily, Teacher Zhang asked a few questions and came by in time, or else there would have been a real mishap. If they really had to take charge of the rescue, something would definitely have gone wrong.

Zhang Lin turned around and gave Xiao Luo a stern look, giving Xiao Luo a chill. He would surely be harshly criticized after returning.

Not long after, Yang Ping arrived: “What’s the situation?”

“While in the regular ward, the nurse immediately initiated a rescue as soon as it was noticed. The response was very timely. Now the blood pressure is stable, and breathing is unobstructed.” The doctor from the regular ward who brought the patient hadn’t left and participated in the rescue with the ICU doctors.

“This time, it really was a peanut butter allergy,” the ICU doctor said with a sigh of relief.

The attending physician also understood the course of events. After Lucas was transferred from the ICU back to the regular ward, he found it very strange that peanut butter nearly killed him in the United States, yet eating peanut butter in China was fine. After eating, he was perfectly well, so he consulted his private doctor in the United States. The American doctor heard the Chinese doctor’s explanation that American peanut butter was inadequate and told Lucas that it had nothing to do with peanut butter. The real reason was that Lucas had actually become desensitized to peanut butter, unrelated to Chinese peanut butter. The claim that Chinese peanuts wouldn’t cause allergies was nothing but nonsense from Chinese doctors, without any scientific basis.

He was supposedly desensitized to peanut butter, so to confirm this, Lucas somehow got a jar of pure American peanut butter and wanted to see if he had truly become desensitized. So he ate peanut butter again, this time genuinely American peanut butter. However, he was still somewhat sensible and didn’t eat it secretly alone; instead, he had a family member nearby to call a nurse immediately if anything went wrong.

“Isn’t this just asking for trouble?” Director Wang of the ICU remarked, pushing himself into danger for no reason when everything was fine.

“The patient isn’t conscious, right?” Director Wang added.

“He was given a sedative,” a nurse beside him said.

“Oh.” Director Wang relaxed; it was okay to spout off a bit.

“Did you do an allergen test?” Yang Ping asked.

    The doctor replied, “Yes, positive!”

“Last time, the Chinese peanut butter was negative, this time the American peanut butter is positive? Truly miraculous!” the graduate student Xiao Luo, who was with Yang Ping, finally squeezed out a sentence, but was glared at again by Zhang Lin.

“What about his peanut butter? Is it still around?” Yang Ping asked.

“The nurses in the ward sealed it.” the ward doctor answered.

This Lucas is quite something – knowing he’s allergic to peanut butter and still has to try it out.

Now that Lucas’s vital signs were stable, there wasn’t much left for Yang Ping to do, so after checking on Lucas, he still had to rush back to the operating room.

Coming out of the ICU, Director Wang escorted Yang Ping to the door since Yang Ping was the chief surgeon for this patient’s surgery, so he often came to check in. At the door, Lucas’s family wanted to chat with Yang Ping to learn about the condition.

But Yang Ping didn’t have time to discuss the condition with them now, plus in this situation, the ICU doctors were the primary caregivers in charge. However, to show the surgery team’s concern for the patient, Yang Ping left Zhang Lin to communicate with the family.

“There’s a new member in Lucas’s family, his brother, who’s quite aggressive and says unpleasant things. You should be cautious,” the ICU doctor warned Zhang Lin.

“How could such a situation occur, such a basic error in your hospital? I am very disappointed in you.” In the meeting room, before the ICU doctor could speak, the patient’s family arrogantly spoke first. This family member was Lucas’s brother, who had just arrived recently and was said to be some state senator in the United States.

Zhang Lin raised his glasses and said, “It shouldn’t be you who’s disappointed in us, but we who are disappointed in you. Clearly knowing you’re allergic to peanut butter, why go try it? Isn’t this playing with your own life? Why would a grown adult make such a basic error? Unbelievable.”

The senator, after being rebuked, was momentarily at a loss, perhaps not expecting the doctor to retort.

“The doctor said he was already desensitized to peanut butter, that’s why he ate it,” the senator said angrily.

“Which doctor said that?” Zhang Lin questioned.

“Our American doctor,” the senator replied.

“Then you should tell your American doctor you’re disappointed, not us. Understand? If it weren’t for our timely intervention, he’d be dead. Don’t make such basic mistakes again in the future; not every time will you be so lucky.”

“But last time he was able to eat peanut butter.”

“Last time he ate Chinese peanut butter, this time it’s American peanut butter; it’s different.”

The senator and other family members looked perplexed.

“Looking all uninformed, who are you giving that face to, who do you look down upon? Dammit, putting yourself in harm’s way, then turning around and being disappointed in us doctors, well, I’m disappointed in you!” Zhang Lin muttered to himself, cursing.

“Also, a reminder, be more courteous when speaking to our doctors in the future; learn to respect people,” Zhang Lin said.

The senator’s face turned red: “I’m sorry.”

It felt quite satisfying to rebuke someone in English, even though Zhang Lin’s English wasn’t very good.
