CHAPTER 59: SYSDI 59: ACCEPTING THE PROPOSAL 2
One moment, Evan and Spire are having a conversation inside Evan’s childhood home. The next moment, they are inside a car driving towards the main city.
Evan’s things are all packed inside one small backpack that he owns. It was all put in their haphazardly because this wasn’t the original plan.
First of all, the original plan was that he would continue moving to the stone hill cave when he has the time. He was supposed to be meditating right now, catch up on the few that he had missed. Maybe have a rest day while he catch up on reading too.
If he didn’t accept, he lose the opportunity of a lifetime. Plenty of kids like him would love to get adopted into a noble family as servants, because at least they will get fed and their families too.
He should be happy, really, he should be.
The other part of him was thinking that he shouldn’t have accepted. There are still things that he could have done while he is back. Their garden, the house. He should still be there until they got back. But that wasn’t the case.
Evan had no choice but to go through with what Spire wanted. She came specifically to wait for his reply and bring him back with her if he has agreed. He is to be bodyguard, even if they believe he doesn’t have the ability to do so. He has no idea what ability he could use to be like a bodyguard for Spire. The ones he has is too... dangerous or just for utility, oh and healing.
"Are you normally this quiet?" Spire asked beside him.
Evan opens one eyes for a moment to peak at what Spire is doing. He ends up with both eyes open because her face is so close to his. He leans back to keep some distance between them. "I was meditating. Do you need something?"
Spire raised her eyebrow. As she did that, one of her fox-like ear rises up with it. Then, she moved back to her position but her gaze never left him. "Meditating? You can meditate in a car?"
Evan shrugs. "This car, as you called it, actually has some rhythm, or whatever the thing is. It is helping me with the meditation for some reason."
"That’s the only reason why you’re quiet?" Spire asked.
"Yeah. Why else would you think I am quiet? We had a whole conversation back at my home. I wasn’t quiet then." Evan replies, closing his eyes once again.
Thankfully, Spire stayed silent during the entire car ride. From Evan’s location, it would take a long time before he can reach the city if he decides to go by foot. If they do use a carriage instead, something a horse or a cow would pull, it will take less time, but still at least half a day through and another going back.
That is at least, what he was told to by his dad, Erwin.
However, the car is pretty quick. Evan has never rode a car before, nor has he rode a carriage either. If anyone asks which one is faster, he had a feeling it’s the car but he really won’t be able to tell. He just knew that only the noble people and the rich people could afford this.
’You know, for a pompous, young, noble lady, Spire Valrepite seems like an interesting person.’ Iva says, its words less echo-y than it usually is.
Evan has his eyes closed, so at least no one can see that he had rolled his eyes. ’What makes you say that? All she did the moment she met me is demand I give her attention and that I should be glad her presence graced me. I don’t even know what presence or grace mean.’
At his mental reply, Iva giggles. ’Ah, ah, Evan. She likes you! Not sure how or why, but she does. I do not think she will come visit you at all if she doesn’t care.’
’I don’t believe you.’ Evan takes a deep breath. ’I’m supposed to be her bodyguard. Even if I get adopted to their family, it won’t mean anything. They would just add me under their wing of protection, that’s all.’
Iva hums. ’Believe me or not, that’s the truth. The only thing that you should think about, is that she did say something right.’
’That is?’
’That the Entrance Exams for the magic school thing is drawing near~’ Iva says, in a sing song tone. ’She will be in it. You are going to be in it. You are both attending the first batch. What ability are you going to show the crowd?’
’I don’t have the answer to that yet. All I know is that I have to pick only one. I think people will find it weird if I have more than one.’ Evan replies.
He still think that way. Why else was he thinking about which one he wanted people to think he has. If he had a water power, maybe he can pretend all of his abilities were water based. The healing or whatever else could just be his water. Would that work? It wouldn’t unless Evan tries.
’I need a place to see what the blanked books were. I got Cure in the green book that I found accidentally. I would have to find out what the others are.’
Iva hums. ’Fair enough. There is also the option of just having your power as summon and you can get me out. You’re the only one who can hear me anyway. I could just be a summon that can do your bidding or something. I think that will work.’
Evan has no idea if summoners are rare. All he knew was that elementals are pretty common. That is the main reason why he wanted to pass under the radar and pretend he has a water based ability or maybe wind. But... Iva does bring up a point. Would it be better to pretend he is a summoner ability user instead?
