Tempted Trapped and Too Late to Run
Chapter 815
ra didn''t stop walking. She didn''t turn around, not even once, as she passed Dn''s car. She just kept going.
The windows were up. She had no idea if he was inside, and honestly, she didn''t care. She got into her own car and drove off.
Dn''s car followed her in silence. The pain in her head had faded a little, but her vision was still blurry, the world doubling in front of her eyes.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to hold it together. By the time she pulled into Palm Bay, Dn''s car rolled to a stop right behind hers.
She didn''t even nce his way, just headed straight inside.
The housekeeper waiting in the foyer let out a shaky breath of relief when ra came through the door. "Ma''am, you left so suddenly, and you''re still hurt. We''ve all been worried sick about you."
ra didn''t say a word. She just walked upstairs.
The housekeeper watched her go, anxious, noticing how empty ra''s eyes looked-like she wasn''t really there.
She was about to say something else, but the front door opened again. To her surprise, Mr. Evans walked in.
Strange. Weren''t the two of them fighting? Why would they bothe back together?
ra''s face gave nothing away, and Dn looked just as calm—almost too calm. "Sir, did you and Mrs. Evans make up?" the housekeeper asked, half-hopeful. Dn just nced up the stairs, then lowered his gaze and quietly followed. ra went straight into his study.
The room was so still. She switched on the light and walked to his desk. Everything was perfectly neat, lined up just so.
She yanked open the side drawer and searched through it carefully. Nothing-no bracelet, no ring, nothing Megan had talked about.
She hurried to the drawer on the right and started rifling through that one too. She pulled out files and random things, piling them on the desk and the floor until both drawers were empty.
Nothing. Not a single clue.
ra braced herself against the desk, finally standing upright, her body trembling.
She looked up and saw Dn standing in the doorway. For a second, her eyes looked lost, but then her gaze sharpened.
She had no idea how long he''d been there, just watching.
ra pressed her lips together.
Dn didn''t say anything. He stood there in a suit, looking like it was the middle of the workday instead of the middle of the night. He looked wless, almost like he''d dressed up for this.
ra raised a hand to her forehead, and pain shot through her shoulder.
He spoke up, gentle but serious. "Are you alright?"
She wasn''t. Her head, her heart, her body-everything hurt so much, she could barely think straight.
Her face was pale, her hand shaking as she gripped the edge of the desk.
Dn stepped forward and steadied her. "Let''s get you some rest."
ra didn''t argue. She''d lost so much weighttely, and after everything that happened tonight with Simon, she was just
mov
letely drained.
When Dn walked her to the bedroom, the housekeeper called after them, worry
clear in her voice. "Ma''am, is it your injury? Are you in pain?"
