Chapter 102

Prologue, The ●●● God

I have seen gods.

There was a god who mimicked the sound of bells to demand sacrifices. There was a mermaid god who showed nightmares of death repeating eternally. There was a massive god who merely watched over human life. There was a silkworm god who fought against those that threatened human life.

There was a cat god whose three eyes reflected the past, present, and future. There was a fish god who ravaged the ocean floor and dropped blessings from the sky. There was a god who showed illusions of dancing dead. There was a god who returned sacrificed humans in a state forever young and beautiful.

I saw people tormented by gods.

A human who burned their son and daughter to bring their mother back to life. A human who slaughtered villagers out of fear of divine punishment. A human who devoted their life to building a shrine for a god no one else remembered.

A human who couldn't recall even after their family was taken by a god. A human who saw the form of an invisible god. A human who tried to exploit a god. A human who erased themselves to stop them.

I merely watched.

I could do nothing.

I am like a book. If no one seeks to open me, I cannot speak. No matter how what's written is used, I cannot stop it. Even if I know everything, the book itself has no means to act upon it.

There are those who burn books. There are those who protect books. Neither is good or evil. Just like gods.

If I am the same as a book, then I should not have had thoughts.

But books are written with intent.

That night, I was chosen. To record everything. His will, who vowed to do so and created the special investigation division, is what drives me.

There is a girl he entrusted. There are people she is trying to protect.

I can do nothing. All I can do is record.

Even so, I continue to pray that they, that the book, will be opened. Because I know that prayer is not meaningless.
