Chapter 58
CHAPTER 58: 58
XAVIER
A doctor came in and had Rex on a drip. I paced around the room, watching him attend to Rex. My mind wandered to the reason Rex went to Marve in the first place.
He must’ve had no choice but to stay there and be tortured because he was outnumbered. He wasn’t really strong. He just had a big build.
"He will be fine soon. He just needs a lot of rest. The drip is food and plenty of water. It also has something in it that will make him sleep. He is dehydrated, and there’s no food in his stomach, so that is what he needs." The doctor explained to me that after he was done fixing the drip, it looked like breast milk.
"seeing what he is, his wolf will heal him. It just needs the strength to do that." He added, and I nodded. The doctor knew what he was doing.
"This, should not get out of this room," I warned, and he nodded.
"Secrecy is my motor. I was never here." He replied and dropped another bag of food on the table beside Rex’s bed.
"Here is another drip. In case he exhausts the first bag. You need to check on him through the night to change bags. If he wakes before the first bag finishes, then there will be no need to change bags." He instructed. I nodded, and he took his leave.
Brian walked in as the doctor walked out.
"You should get some rest. He is fine now. You need to rest as well." He tapped my shoulder.
I turned to the door and turned back to look at Rex one more time. The words of our father lingered in my mind.
’Take care of your brother. You are the older one. The only one he has in this world. Protect him. Keep him by your side.’ Those were his last words.
I walked out of the room.
"Rex is awake!" These were the words that woke me from my sleep the next morning.
I shot up from the bed like I wasn’t sleeping some seconds ago.
I got to Rex’s room, and he was awake. The swellings had reduced, and I could see his eyes. His lips too could welcome some real food.
He was talking to one of my men, and his smile faded when he saw me. I acted like I hadn’t half ran through the hall to his room.
"You’re awake," I stated the obvious.
He nodded and shifted his gaze to the wall.
"Good for you," I replied and turned to leave, but he called back and said the words I never thought I would hear him say to me.
"Thanks. For saving me." I turned around.
"Did the doctor give him the wrong drip?" I directed the question to the guard in the room who looked hopelessly confused. Checking the drip bag.
"You do know that saying a ’you’re welcome’ won’t hurt, right?" Rex asked with a frown, and I shrugged.
"Well, you aren’t welcome. You went to see my rival behind my back. What on earth did you go to discuss with him? Perhaps you went to tell him to stop being my rival? Or try to convince him that he could run his business without fighting me...?" Rex cut me short.
"...Yes." I paused and looked at him.
"That was exactly what I went to do." He replied, and I didn’t know what else to say or do. I didn’t even know if I should believe him.
Why would he do that?
"Why did you do that?" I asked, my voice calmer.
"I found a way to make him stop beefing with you and get his clients. There’s news that some investors came in from Pakistan, and they are looking to do business. I thought telling him would make him shift attention from the company, but he turned to a maniac as if he had been waiting for me to come in all this while."
I paused. I was taken by surprise. No lies. I couldn’t believe Rex put himself in harm’s way for me.
"You heard such news and didn’t think to run it through me first?" I asked even though I knew I wouldn’t have accepted it if he had told me.
"You don’t believe I can do anything good. It’s the family business, after all. Even though you keep kicking me out, I have to do what I can to keep the family business going." He replied.
"About the Pakistani investors, did you tell it to Marve yet?" I asked, and he made a slight movement with his head but stopped as if he had begun to shake his head but thought it would be a bad idea and stopped.
"He didn’t even let me speak. Sent his men to hold me down and take me to the cell." Rex replied.
"Good," I muttered, and he looked at me with hurt in his eyes.
"No, it’s not good that you were hurt but good that you did not tell him about it. We are going to work to get them on our side. I might’ve lost the Mexican client, but I will get Pakistani investors." I said with a look of vengeance.
"We’re going back. Get ready." I instructed and made to leave the room, but he called back.
"Are you taking me with you?" He seemed surprised. Well, I was, too. But he deserved some reward for putting himself in harm’s way for a good reason for the first time in his life.
"I need to watch you closely. Can’t let you visit all my rivals without a plan B and getting tortured like a fucking thief." I replied and I could see the side of his lips twitch in a smile before I walked out.
We hit the road and I was dying to see Nylah. I knew I deserved to be punished for leaving her the way I did and that was the reason I was running back to her.
We got to the pack and I headed for my chambers immediately. I’d told her to stay in my chambers. She was my property after all.
I met an empty room. She was surely stubborn. I headed for her room. I met her friend coming out of the hall that had her room and I asked.
"Where’s Nylah?" She bowed slightly before replying.
"Nylah’s been acting strange. She hasn’t come out of her room in days and has only eaten when I forced her to and that was the day before yesterday."
I almost screamed, "What?!" Nylah was fine before I left so what was all this about?
I nodded and knocked at the door but there was no reply. I turned the door handle and pushed but it was locked from the inside.
"She doesn’t want anyone to come in. Said she just wanted to be alone. I brought her food." She gestured to the basket with food in her hand. "But she didn’t even open the door for me."
I brought out the bulk of keys and slipped hers into the keyhole. I twisted it and the door was unlocked. I opened the door and walked in, only to see Nylah sitting on the ground, her knees pulled tightly to her chest.
