CHAPTER 38: CHAPTER 38 FIGHTING EVIL WITH EVIL8_1

The security guards were too terrified to even breathe, hastily shrinking to one side. Wan Donglin glanced over and saw Yan Xixi. Her face flushed an extremely strange rosy color, like an audience member engrossed in a captivating drama, completely oblivious to her mother in the car. He paused, then raised his voice slightly, "Xixi..."

No one answered. He immediately reached out, lifted Yan’s mother, and placed her in the back seat of his car. "Xixi, get in quickly, or it’ll be too late..."

Yan Xixi snapped out of her trance, the flush on her face instantly vanishing without a trace. As she got into the car, her entire body trembled violently. She hugged her mother tightly, desperate to hear even the faintest sound from her. But her mother remained silent. Gradually, she felt her mother’s body growing colder. Despite the car’s strong heating, her own hands and feet began to turn ice-cold.

"Mom... Mom..."

Her mother’s grip on her hand slowly loosened; her prematurely aged face was devoid of expression.

"Mom... Mom... Mom, can you hear me calling you? Mom..."

Wan Donglin glanced back at her. The moment he lifted Yan’s mother into the car, he realized the emaciated old woman was beyond saving. But he said nothing, merely ordering the driver to race to the hospital as if their lives depended on it.

The congested city was a sea of red lights, one after another. Wan Donglin, however, didn’t even blink, speeding through every single one. Yan Xixi clutched her mother tightly the entire journey. Occasionally, she would lift her head and see the ghostly, flickering red lights ahead, which seemed to fly past like fleeting souls...

Wan Donglin was on the phone the entire way, but Yan Xixi didn’t hear a word clearly. When the car stopped, people rushed to open the doors. Yan Xixi was so unsteady she could barely stand. She nearly caused the group of doctors, who hurried out with a stretcher, to mistake her for the patient.

「Finally, Yan’s mother lay in the emergency room.」

A young doctor examined her briefly, then stepped back, shaking his head uneasily. Soon after, an older doctor rushed in. He examined Yan’s mother more thoroughly, repeatedly using medical instruments for diagnosis before stepping back. Finally, looking at Wan Donglin, he also shook his head. "There’s no hope, Mr. Wan. The patient has passed away."

Wan Donglin glanced at Yan Xixi. She leaned tightly against the stark white hospital wall, about a meter from her mother. She wasn’t wailing, nor did she show any signs of hysteria; her face was simply ashen, as white as paper.

"Xixi, your mother is gone. Please accept my condolences."

She didn’t answer, merely averting her gaze. She looked neither at her mother nor at Wan Donglin, her gaze fixed unblinkingly on the ward window.

Two nurses approached with a white sheet to cover Yan’s mother. Yan Xixi suddenly lunged forward, clutching her mother’s hand tightly until Wan Donglin pulled her away. Then, wide-eyed, she watched as the white sheet was drawn over her mother.

Behind her, Xu Xiaoya’s choked sobs could be heard. "Xixi... I’m so sorry... It’s all my fault. We should have called an ambulance; I shouldn’t have driven. I delayed your mother’s treatment... It’s all my fault..."

Yan Xixi leaned against the wall, her eyes fixed on the group of people wheeling her mother away. Only when the door slowly closed did she finally exhale. She whispered, "My mother longed for release for so long. This is truly a blessing for her. And for me..."

A faint smile touched her lips. For an instant, her posture was ramrod straight. "I... I’m also free..."

Seeing Yan Xixi’s deathly pale face and, incredibly, a smile even at this moment, Xu Xiaoya cried out, "Xixi!" Yan Xixi’s body immediately went limp, and she collapsed to the floor.
