Anastasia''s brow furrowed as soon as she saw who was calling. She just knew— this had to be about Rowan.

Of course.

She picked up, and Hanna''s voice was shaky with worry. "Rowan''s missing. He left this morning and hasn''te back..."

Hanna always got anxious about Rowan, but for her to call so panicked after just a day? She must be scared out of her mind.

Anastasia tried to calm her. "Hey, breathe. Rowan''s a grown man. I''m sure he''s fine. He''ll probably walk through the door any minute."

"No, something''s wrong. I can''t get ahold of him, and I just know he''s gone to rescue Asher. Anastasia, you''re the only one who can stop him." Hanna''s voice was thick, on the verge of tears.

"Don''t worry, okay? Let me try and call him..."

She reassured Hanna, hung up, and immediately tried Rowan''s number. No dice -straight to voicemail every time.

There must be some kind of signal blocker near the prison. That would exin it.

Anastasia felt a chill settle in her chest. This was bad.

She grabbed her car keys and called over her shoulder to Katelyn, "Mom, I''ve got

to run out for a bit. Can you keep an eye on the kids?"

Not waiting for an answer, Anastasia hurried out.

She started the car and called Herman as she drove.

Herman was at The Crescent that evening, a fancy rooftop spot. He was in the middle of negotiating a pass with Mr. Goad.

No matter how busy he was, though, Herman always picked up when Anastasia called.

"Excuse me, Mr. Goad, I need to take this," he said, stepping out of the room. Mr. Goad nodded. "Go right ahead."

Outside, Herman answered, "Hey, babe. What''s up?”

“Hanna just called-she thinks Rowan''s at the prison trying to break Asher out. I tried calling him, but can''t get through. I''m heading over to check things out."

Herman''s voice dropped, all business. "You can''t go. I''ll send Dailey. Please, just stay put, okay?"

He was worried she''d do something reckless out of loyalty, and if things went sideways, she''d be dragged right into it.

"Okay, I hear you. Call Dailey," Anastasia said, and hung up—but she had no intention of waiting around. She kept driving toward the prison.

The road near the prison was deserted and eerily quiet. Anastasia didn''t dare get too close She packed halfway up the hill, pulled over, and looked down at the prison from the mountainside.  s

The sky was thick with clouds, barely any light.

Fifteen minutes crawled by. Suddenly, the prison erupted-sirens red, floodlights snapped on, shouting echoed, and the crack of gunshots split the night.

Something was happening.

Anastasia''s heart mmed in her chest. She swore under her breath. Rowan, you idiot-did you really do it?

She just couldn''t understand what went on in his head.

She stayed out of sight, eyes locked on the prison, ready for anything.

Then headlights swung onto the hillside a car wasing up the road.

Anastasia ducked away from her car and slipped behind a big boulder. The mountain was pitch ck, and she was nearly invisible back there. The car pulled up, stopping right next to hers. The driver got out-Rowan.

Anastasia stared, stunned. She stepped out from behind the rock "Rowan? What are you doing here? You seared me half to death, heard gunshots and thought you were actually breaking in!"  s

Rowan looked just as shocked. "What are you doing here?"

"Hanna called me. She said you''d gone missing and might try to break Asher out,

so I came to check. That chaos over at the prison-wasn''t you, was it?"

Rowan''s eyes flickered. So Anastasia had reallye here because she was worried about him?

"I wasn''t trying to break in," Rowan said. "I just came to look around. After Asher got arrested, I drive by sometimes. You heard gunshots? I didn''t see or hear anything strangeing up here."  s

"I''m telling you, I heard sirens and gunfire. Something''s definitely going on in there," Anastasia insisted.

Then Rowan seemed to realize something. "Wait-if Hanna called you, where is she?"
