CHAPTER 10: CHAPTER 10: HE CAME BACK TO KRYTON JUST FOR HER!
The man was still sound asleep.
Faye Hughes walked over and placed the thermal flask on the table. She noticed the note left on the side.
She picked up the note and glanced at it. Suddenly, a cold laugh escaped her lips.
She turned, walked to the trash can, tore the note to shreds, and threw the pieces inside.
Just then, Owen Grant happened to walk in. "What are you doing?"
"Just throwing out some trash," Faye Hughes said with a faint smile.
「Half an hour later...」
Donovan Xavier lay on the bed, his eyes fluttering open.
He instinctively glanced to his side and frowned. Why isn’t she here?
"Donovan, you’re awake!"
Faye Hughes sat in a chair, handing him a peeled apple.
Donovan Xavier shook his head. "I’m not hungry."
"Where is she?"
"Who?" Faye asked.
"My woman," Donovan Xavier stated.
Hearing this, Faye secretly squeezed her hands and replied with a perfunctory smile, "I don’t know."
"She probably went back to the apartment," Owen Grant added. "I heard from the nurse that you had a high fever last night and she took care of you all night. She might have gone back to rest."
"Donovan, she really cares about you!"
Hearing that last sentence, the corners of Donovan Xavier’s lips lifted slightly. "Of course. I’m her most important person."
A moment later, he felt something was off. She doesn’t have a key or the password. How could she get back to the apartment?
Donovan Xavier’s brow furrowed slightly as he sat up, about to get out of bed.
"Donovan, the doctor said you need to rest! You can’t be moving around!" Faye Hughes immediately said, stopping him.
"I’m going to find her," Donovan Xavier insisted.
"Why do you care about her?!" Faye Hughes exclaimed. "You need to rest now. I made some soup for you. Please, have a little, okay?"
Donovan Xavier didn’t respond. He got out of bed, insisting on leaving. They couldn’t dissuade him, so they had no choice but to follow.
Donovan Xavier left the hospital, got into a car, and returned to his apartment.
He opened the door and searched every room. She was indeed not there.
Remembering something, Donovan Xavier turned and walked back out the door.
「Twenty minutes later.」
His car pulled up to the entrance of a jewelry store.
"Why is it you again?" Noah Sullivan asked the moment he walked in.
Donovan Xavier stepped forward, his voice urgent. "Is she here?"
"Still looking for Chloe?" Noah asked. "She’s not here."
Donovan Xavier was skeptical and started to walk further inside.
"I already said she’s not here!" Noah said, stopping him. "Would I lie to you?"
Seeing his frantic expression, Noah walked over to a nearby table and picked up his phone. "How about I give her a call for you..."
Before he could finish, the man had already stormed out the door and vanished.
Afterward, Donovan Xavier searched for her the entire day but found no trace of her.
She’s gone again, just like four years ago.
He leaned against the hospital bed, suppressing his emotions in silence.
After a long time, Donovan Xavier picked up his phone and made a call.
Several seconds passed before the call was answered.
"Who is it?"
"Grandpa, it’s me," Donovan Xavier said.
"Oh, look at you! So you do remember you have a grandpa! I thought after four years in that godforsaken place, you’d have amnesia and forget all about this family!"
"Just look at you, a grown man! You don’t manage the company, and you don’t come home. Are you trying to kill me with anger?!"
"What have you been doing these last two days?"
"Spending time with a woman."
"And now?"
"Thinking about a woman."
The next moment, a panicked voice erupted from the phone. "Butler... Butler, call 911! Get my quick-acting heart pills!"
"Donovan Xavier, you’ve already infuriated me to death! You can come back tomorrow to collect my corpse!"
Donovan Xavier was silent for a few seconds before he spoke. "Okay, I’ll be back tomorrow."
For a moment, the line went quiet.
"Rea... really?"
"Yeah."
The next second, the tone on the phone did a complete one-eighty. "Good grandson, that’s more like it! As long as you’re willing to come back, your grandpa can live another forty years! Good boy, Grandpa will be waiting for you tomorrow!"
Forty years? He’s already eighty-one. Living another forty years would turn him into some kind of immortal creature.
Donovan Xavier hung up.
「A week later...」
In the hospital office.
Chloe Preston leaned back in her chair, her gaze lowered to the phone on her desk.
A week has passed, and he hasn’t called. It seems I really am dispensable to him. When I’m around, he flirts casually. When I’m gone, he doesn’t care. He was just playing around, not taking it seriously. I shouldn’t have had any expectations. In the end, there’s only disappointment. I should be used to this by now... so why does it still hurt so much?
Suddenly, a colleague waved a hand in front of her face.
"Chloe, what’s wrong?"
"I’m fine," Chloe Preston said with a slight smile.
The next second, a phone rang.
Chloe Preston snatched her phone and glanced at the screen. It’s just a telemarketer...
"Chloe, are you sick?" her colleague asked, noticing something was off. "You’ve been acting strangely all week."
She wasn’t just acting weird; she seemed anxious and insecure. Every time her colleague saw her, Chloe was just staring at her phone, as if waiting for someone’s call.
Suddenly, the door burst open and a nurse hurried in. "Is Dr. Quinn here?"
"Yes, I am!" Chloe replied.
The nurse rushed over. "Dr. Quinn, it’s urgent! A big shot has arrived at our hospital, and he’s specifically asked for you!"
A big shot?
"Who is it?" Chloe asked.
"I’m not sure. The director just said this man is incredibly powerful, and that no one in Kryton dares to cross him!" the nurse said. "He’s personally requested you, and the director wants you to go over immediately!"
"But I have a surgery scheduled soon," Chloe said, troubled.
Her colleague, who had been listening, walked over. "I’ll handle the surgery. You go!"
"Okay, I’ll head over now," Chloe nodded.
She smoothed down her white lab coat, shedding some of her feminine charm for a more cool and self-possessed air. Yet, she was still just as captivating.
Chloe followed the nurse out and down the hall toward the VIP ward.
Honestly, she was curious too. She wanted to see what kind of formidable person this "big shot" was.
When they arrived at the door, she knocked gently.
"Come in."
Chloe Preston opened the door.
As soon as she entered, a handsome man walked toward her.
"Are you Dr. Quinn?"
"Yes," Chloe nodded, looking at the man before her. "And are you the big shot?" she asked politely.
"No," the man said with a smile, glancing toward the sofa. "Mr. Xavier, Dr. Quinn is here."
With that, he walked out and gently closed the door behind him.
Chloe stood stunned for a few seconds before her gaze shifted to the sofa.
The next moment, her eyes widened in recognition.
It’s... it’s him!
Donovan Xavier’s long-fingered hand paused. He rose slowly from the sofa, his entire being exuding a powerful, cold, and aggressive aura.
His gaze met hers as he walked over, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Hello, Dr. Quinn."
His features were handsome and chiseled. He had a tall, commanding stature with long legs, and the suit he wore made him look even more mature and composed. He was the very picture of noble, restrained, and captivating charm.
Chloe Preston stood rooted to the spot, completely shocked.
Wasn’t he supposed to be in Southel? What is he doing here?!
Donovan Xavier stopped in front of her, bending slightly to lean in close. "Why the silence? Has it only been a week, and you’ve already forgotten me?"
"You... you’re back?"
"Yes, I’m back," Donovan Xavier replied, his gaze fixed on her, his dark eyes deep as his Adam’s apple bobbed gently. "I flew from Southel to Kryton. Chloe Preston, I came back specifically for you."
At his words, Chloe Preston’s thick eyelashes trembled.
What did he just say? He said he came back specifically for me. Did I hear that right?
The next moment, Donovan Xavier swept her up into his arms, carried her over to the sofa, and leaned down, pinning her beneath him.
"Why did you leave without a word?"
"Chloe Preston, have you missed me at all this past week?"
