CHAPTER 25: CHAPTER 25: SHE’S A LITTLE BIT JEALOUS

Donovan Xavier took out his phone, glanced at it, and answered the call.

After a dozen seconds, he spoke.

"Yeah, I’m on my way now," Donovan Xavier said.

Chloe Preston looked at him. "Do you have something you need to take care of?"

Donovan Xavier nodded and raised his hand to gently squeeze her shoulder. "A problem came up at the company. I have to go back."

"The driver is downstairs. Can you go to The Xavier Residence by yourself?"

Chloe Preston nodded. "Okay."

Donovan Xavier reached out and stroked her hair. "Good girl."

「An hour later...」

The car arrived at The Xavier Residence, and Chloe Preston got out.

This was her second time here. The first time, she had come on her own to ask for his help; this time, he had forced her to live here.

Chloe Preston couldn’t describe her particular feelings at that moment. This was the place she once dreamed of entering, and now she was finally living here. However, she was no longer his girlfriend.

The driver took out her luggage and walked over. "Miss Preston, please go inside."

Chloe Preston nodded.

As soon as she walked in, a housekeeper approached her respectfully.

"Miss Preston, I’m Housekeeper Wallace. Per Mr. Xavier’s instructions, I’ll be in charge of all your daily needs, and they must be the absolute best."

"If you’re dissatisfied with anything at all, just let me know!"

"I understand. Thank you," Chloe Preston said.

Housekeeper Wallace smiled respectfully. "It’s my duty. Would you like to look around now, or would you prefer to go to your room?"

"Let’s go to the room."

"Very well, I’ll take you there right away."

Upstairs, in the bedroom.

Housekeeper Wallace said, "Miss Preston, Mr. Xavier stated beforehand that you are to stay only in his room. There are no other options."

Chloe Preston glanced around, her eyes falling on a table laden with all kinds of jewelry, various famous paintings, and antiques. The estimated value had to be at least a few billion.

"...What is all this?" Chloe Preston asked.

"Mr. Xavier prepared it," Housekeeper Wallace replied. "He said it was to make you smile."

Hearing this, Chloe Preston couldn’t help but let the corners of her lips curl up slightly.

He still knows how to make her happy. How rare.

Chloe Preston turned her head and glanced at the large bed with its red comforter, red sheets, and red pillows.

She frowned slightly. "Did Donovan Xavier prepare this as well?"

Housekeeper Wallace laughed. "No, I prepared it. You just moved in, and this makes things feel more festive."

"You don’t like it?"

Chloe Preston didn’t dislike it. It was just that anyone who didn’t know better might see this and think they were married and that this was prepared for their wedding night.

Then, Housekeeper Wallace looked at her. "Miss Preston, do you have any other instructions?"

Chloe Preston shook her head. "No, that’s all. You may leave now."

Housekeeper Wallace nodded in compliance, turned, and left the room, heading down the stairs.

At that moment, two young maids were carrying trays of fruit up the stairs.

Housekeeper Wallace glanced at them and called out, "Wait. I remember this fruit was cut half an hour ago. It’s not fresh anymore. Replace it!"

"Everything Miss Preston eats or drinks must be of the highest quality and the absolute freshest!"

The two maids pursed their lips. "It’s fresh enough. Is she really that delicate?"

"Exactly. So what if she moved in? She has no status or title. She isn’t even his girlfriend!"

"She’s just pretty, what’s so special about her? Maybe Mr. Xavier is just playing around with her!"

"I’ll bet a thousand that he’ll kick her out within a month!"

Hearing their chatter, Housekeeper Wallace’s brow furrowed. "Who gave you permission to gossip about the master of the house? You’re both fired. Get out today!"

Then, she walked over, gathered all the surrounding servants, and said in a cold voice, "Miss Preston just moved in today. All of you had better watch yourselves!

"She is the first woman Mr. Xavier has brought home in all these years. You can imagine how important she is. It’s only a matter of time before you’re all calling her Mrs. Xavier!

"If any of you truly offend her and Mr. Xavier holds you accountable, don’t even think about finding work in Kryton again!"

...

「In the evening.」

Chloe Preston personally cooked a lavish spread of dishes.

She wondered if his tastes had changed after four years. He used to love her cooking.

Chloe Preston sat down, took out her phone, and sent the man a message.

[Are you still busy? I made dinner. I’m waiting for you.]

Ten minutes passed, but the man still hadn’t replied.

Chloe Preston lightly pursed her lips, figuring he must be busy. She got up and took the dishes back to the kitchen to reheat them.

Another hour passed.

Chloe Preston leaned against her chair, quietly staring at the table full of dishes without a word.

She took out her phone and called him. The call wouldn’t connect; his phone was off.

What is he doing?

Seeing this, Housekeeper Wallace grew worried she would starve and couldn’t help but step forward. "Miss, why don’t you eat first? Don’t wait for Mr. Xavier. Let him eat leftovers when he gets back."

Chloe Preston shook her head, her voice even. "It’s okay. I’ll wait for him."

He used to be very busy, and she had often waited for him just like this. It seemed she had grown used to waiting...

After a while, Chloe Preston got up and walked to the door to look outside. It was late, and a cold, heavy rain was pouring down.

Suddenly, her phone chimed with a notification. Chloe Preston instinctively thought it was Donovan, but it wasn’t. It was a friend request.

Who could it be?

Chloe Preston accepted the request. A moment later, the person sent her a photo.

It was the back of a tall, imposing man in a sharp suit. Even through the screen, he exuded an aura of refined aloofness, a silent warning for strangers to keep their distance.

Chloe Preston recognized him at once. It was Donovan Xavier.

Then, another message arrived.

[I’m Faye Hughes. Donovan is with me now.]

The short sentence pierced Chloe Preston’s heart.

So he wasn’t back yet because he went to see her? And she had even made dinner and foolishly waited for him to come home... How ridiculous. It was the very first day she had moved in, and he had already abandoned her to see someone else. Scumbag! What a massive scumbag! Jerk! Bastard! He’d better not think he can placate her so easily this time! She wouldn’t forgive him!

Actually, she knew there was nothing between him and Faye Hughes. Whenever he looked at Faye, his eyes held no trace of a man’s desire for a woman; they were like a stagnant pool of water. Besides, he had been single for the past four years. If there were really something between them, they would have gotten together long ago. Looking at the photo’s background again, it looked like a hospital. She figured Faye Hughes must be sick, which was why he went to see her.

But even so, she was still upset! Why did he hide it from her? Why didn’t he tell her beforehand? Why didn’t he reply to her messages and even turn off his phone?

She had to admit it. She was a little jealous...

Just then, Faye Hughes sent another message.

[So, are you feeling sad now?]

Ha! Sad? Alright, maybe just a tiny bit.

Chloe Preston knew Faye was sending these messages to deliberately provoke her—it was a childish trick. But it had worked. She was provoked, and she was furious! She had to retaliate.

Chloe Preston turned, walked back to the table, reached out, and dumped all the dishes into the trash can.

If he’s not fortunate enough to eat it, then the trash can will be.

Seeing her fury, Housekeeper Wallace didn’t dare to approach, shivering in a corner.

Chloe Preston then went upstairs and back into the bedroom. She walked to the table and took a photo of the table piled high with expensive jewelry, antiques, and famous paintings with her phone.

With a few light taps, she sent the picture.
