The Cat-Like Miss Preston: Mr. CEO begs for Reconciliation!
Chapter 89: Unconscious
CHAPTER 89: CHAPTER 89: UNCONSCIOUS
"Donovan!"
Wendy Chandler’s pupils contracted, and she screamed in terror. The surrounding servants were horrified and rushed over to help him. "Sir! Sir, wake up!"
Inside the room, the door wasn’t fully closed, and Chloe Preston heard faint cries of alarm from outside.
What happened? She suddenly felt a wave of panic, a momentary, sharp pain piercing her heart.
Chloe walked over, opened the door, and stepped out. At the top of the stairs, she saw the scene unfolding before her. Wendy Chandler was cradling the man in her arms, crying hysterically. "Donovan, wake up! Don’t... Don’t scare your mother."
Chloe’s eyes narrowed. Without a second thought, she ran down the stairs in a panic. "What happened to Donovan Xavier?"
A servant replied, "Sir fell down the stairs."
"What!"
The man’s head was covered in blood. The sight was horrifying; he was unconscious. Chloe crouched beside him, her eyes bloodshot and brimming with tears as she trembled all over. "Don... Donovan."
She wanted to touch him but didn’t dare.
Her voice trembled as she cried out his name. "Donovan Xavier, wake up! Didn’t you say today was a good day and you were going to take me to get our marriage license?"
"Wake up! Look at me..."
Just then, Housekeeper Wallace rushed in with a group of bodyguards, who carefully lifted the man and carried him out to be taken to the hospital.
「Three days later.」
In a hospital ward, a group of people kept a somber vigil.
On the bed, the man’s eyes were tightly shut. His face was pale and bloodless, and his brow was slightly furrowed, as if he were in tremendous pain. He remained unconscious.
Chloe Preston sat by the bedside, holding his icy hand in hers. She was speechless, her gaze fixed on him. She had performed his surgery herself. It was a success, but he still showed no signs of waking up.
Ian Xavier stood to one side, his glare fixed on Wendy Chandler as he berated her. "I told you to talk some sense into Donovan! How could you let him fall down the stairs?"
Wendy’s lips pressed into a tight line, her face wracked with guilt. She couldn’t utter a single word.
Ian then turned his anger on Chloe. "And you! Weren’t you always by his side? How did you let him fall?"
"Donovan still hasn’t woken up. Did something go wrong during the surgery? Did you fail to heal him properly?"
He was about to say more when Isla Xavier came over and tugged on his clothes. "That’s enough, Dad. Donovan needs to rest. You’re going to disturb him if you keep shouting!"
Ian leaned against a table, his cold eyes sweeping over them. "This is all your fault! You’ve done this to my son!"
At that moment, a phone began to ring. Ian glanced at the screen; the call was from Caleb Xavier. Ever since the day Donovan had left, Caleb had fallen gravely ill. Just last night, he had developed a high fever that nearly turned critical.
Ian answered the call and walked out of the room.
Chloe remained by the bed, gazing at the unconscious man, her eyes faintly red. Noticing her state, Julian Xavier approached her side. "You should get some sleep," he said gently. "You’ve been by his side for days without sleeping or eating. Your body won’t be able to take it if this continues."
Chloe shook her head. "I don’t need to. I can handle it."
"We’re watching Donovan," Julian insisted. "He’ll be okay."
Chloe looked at the man on the bed, her lips pale, her tone unwavering. "I want to stay with him."
Julian finally lost his patience. "Maybe you can handle it, but what about the baby in your belly? If Donovan knew you were abusing your body like this, would he be happy? He would be utterly heartbroken."
Hearing the word "baby," Chloe’s eyes flickered.
That’s right, there’s the baby. Their child absolutely cannot have another accident.
Chloe touched her abdomen and looked up at Julian, her lips moving slightly. "I... I need to eat."
A small smile touched Julian’s lips.
Days turned into weeks, and two months passed in the blink of an eye.
Donovan Xavier was brought back to The Xavier Residence. His physical condition had improved, but he remained in a coma. Back at the hospital, the doctors had told them that, given his condition, he would likely end up in a vegetative state and might never wake up. It was said that when Caleb Xavier heard this news at the old family home, he had fainted on the spot.
「In the evening.」
As she did every evening, Chloe brought a basin of warm water. She carefully undressed him and gently washed his body with a towel.
As she worked, she spoke softly. "I learned a new dish today. Housekeeper Wallace said it was delicious. When you wake up, I’ll make it for you."
"Adrian Rhodes and Leo Sterling came to see you again this morning. Adrian even tore up your favorite piece of calligraphy so you can scold him when you wake up."
"I’m doing fine, too. I’m eating and sleeping well every day, and I’m taking very good care of our baby."
She had fallen into a pattern these last few days. Sometimes she would sit in silence; other times, she would talk to him for hours, her voice a stream of soft complaints. As Chloe spoke, her eyes grew moist, and tears began to fall, one after another.
Next, she took a clean set of pajamas and dressed him. After making him comfortable and tidying his hair, she dipped a cotton swab in water to moisten his slightly dry lips.
Finally, she got into bed and lay down beside him, placing one of his large hands on her slightly rounded belly.
She spoke again, her voice incredibly soft and tinged with tears. "Donovan Xavier, can you feel our child? He’s being so good."
"When are you going to wake up? Please don’t make me wait too long. I miss you so much. I wish you could open your eyes and talk to me."
As she spoke, a sob caught in her throat, and fresh tears streamed down, dampening the pillow.
"If you don’t wake up soon, I might just go find someone else to spend the rest of my life with and leave you behind."
Chloe looked up at him, a tearful smile on her face. "I’m kidding... It’s okay even if you never wake up. I can wait for you forever."
"Do you think I talk too much? It’s getting late. Let’s go to sleep."
The lights went out.
Chloe leaned in and gave him a light kiss on the lips. A tear escaped the corner of her eye, dampening the hollow of his neck.
"Good night, my love..."
Darkness enveloped the room.
The man’s eyes were tightly closed, and he was completely still. But in the next moment, his long, bony fingers twitched.
