Chapter 92: No Peeking
CHAPTER 92: CHAPTER 92: NO PEEKING
「Two hours later.」
In the hospital.
The doctor adjusted his glasses and walked over, holding the scans.
Donovan Xavier leaned back in his chair, legs crossed, his posture lazy. Chloe Preston sat beside him, her clear eyes fixed on him as she clutched his arm tightly with both hands.
Donovan Xavier, his face devoid of emotion, struggled slightly, but he couldn’t break free. Her grip was simply too tight, leaving him momentarily helpless. He turned his head, his brow furrowed as he glanced at her. "I’m not going to run off. Can you let go?"
"We’re in public. Aren’t you embarrassed, clinging to me like this?"
Chloe Preston simply pressed her lips together and continued to hold his arm, stubbornly refusing to let go.
Adrian Rhodes turned back and shot him a look. "You think this is something? You used to kiss her right in front of everyone. Flirtatious words just rolled off your tongue."
"Look at you now, acting all proper."
Donovan Xavier was speechless.
Leo Sterling stood up and asked the doctor, "Doctor, what exactly is his condition? Why doesn’t he remember so many people now that he’s awake?"
The doctor deliberated for a few seconds before speaking. "After a series of tests, I can confirm that Mr. Xavier is suffering from temporary amnesia."
Donovan Xavier’s brows knitted slightly.
Chloe Preston’s eyelashes trembled, and she lowered her head, unable to speak. He has amnesia. He doesn’t remember me. What should I do? What about our child?
At the thought, she clutched his arm even tighter.
Donovan Xavier felt a pang of discomfort and wanted to forcibly pull his arm away. But when he glanced down, he noticed her eyes growing moist.
Is she about to cry?
An inexplicable tightness bloomed in his chest. In the end, he stopped struggling and let her hold on.
Leo Sterling paused for a few seconds. "How long will it take for him to recover?"
The doctor replied, "That... I can’t say for sure."
"It varies from person to person. Some people recover in three to five days, while others might take months or even years. There are also cases where a person might never regain their memories."
"As his family, you can try to talk to him about details from his past. That might help stimulate his recovery."
Leo Sterling said no more.
「Ten minutes later.」
The four of them left the hospital together.
Adrian Rhodes slammed a fist into a nearby wall, wincing in pain. He gritted his teeth. "Damn it! He actually forgot me!"
Donovan Xavier watched him calmly.
Then, Adrian Rhodes strode over and viciously grabbed him by the collar. "Donovan Xavier, I’m giving you three days! You have to remember me, or else..."
"Or else what?" Donovan Xavier asked, swatting his hand away and regarding him with a cold stare.
Adrian Rhodes was speechless. He realized he couldn’t actually do anything to him.
He fell silent, clenching his fists. He spun around angrily, strode to the car, and got in.
Seeing how emotional he was, Leo Sterling grew worried. He looked at Donovan Xavier and said, "I’ll go check on Mr. Rhodes. Will you be alright?"
"Don’t be ridiculous," Donovan Xavier replied.
Leo Sterling glanced at Chloe Preston. "Chloe, please take good care of him. I’m leaving now."
He turned, ran to the car, and got in before driving away.
Donovan Xavier didn’t linger either. He walked to his own car, opened the door, and got inside. The driver started the engine.
Chloe Preston remained rooted to the spot, watching, unsure if she should approach the car. He didn’t call for me. If I go over, will he send me away?
The car window rolled down, and the driver poked his head out. "Ma’am, why aren’t you getting in?"
Donovan Xavier heard him but kept his head down, staring at his phone. His handsome face was calm, and he didn’t even spare her a glance.
"I’ll just get a cab," Chloe Preston said. "You guys can go ahead."
The driver hesitated. "But..."
He turned back to look at the man in the backseat. "Sir, Mrs. Xavier said she wants to take a cab."
"Let her," Donovan Xavier said.
The driver was stunned for a moment. Everyone knew how much the sir doted on his wife. Why was his attitude so cold toward her after waking up? He didn’t dare to ask any more questions. After all, Donovan was the boss. The driver’s job was to do as he was told.
The car drove away.
The sky was gloomy and overcast, and raindrops began to fall. The rain came on quickly, gradually growing heavier. Chloe Preston stood at the hospital entrance without an umbrella.
She was fiddling with her phone when, a second later, the black Rolls-Royce Phantom returned.
Chloe Preston looked up, startled.
The window rolled down again. Donovan Xavier’s long, bony fingers rested on the window frame. His handsome face was impassive as he glanced out at her.
"What are you doing standing there in a daze? Get over here," he called out.
Chloe Preston’s eyes flickered.
Donovan Xavier frowned. "What? Do you need me to get out and personally invite you?"
The next second, the car door opened.
He got out. His legs were long and slender as he strode forward, grabbed her cold hand, and pulled her toward the car. The wind howled, and the rain came down in sheets, PITTER-PATTER. Their hair and clothes were speckled with rain.
Donovan Xavier glanced at her, then pulled out a handkerchief and casually handed it to her.
When she didn’t move, he said, "Dry off."
"Okay." Chloe Preston took it and, without thinking, reached out to wipe his hair.
"It’s for you," Donovan Xavier said in a low voice.
Taking the handkerchief back, he gently dabbed at her slightly damp hair. The gesture was surprisingly tender.
Chloe Preston stared at him, the rims of her eyes turning red.
She bit her lip and, in the next instant, threw herself into his arms, holding him tight.
Donovan Xavier tugged at her, his voice a mixture of annoyance and helplessness. "What is this fixation of yours? Do you just enjoy throwing yourself into any man’s arms?"
Chloe Preston pretended not to hear, hugging him recklessly, wishing she could meld into him.
Donovan Xavier was truly at a loss with her. He took a sharp breath, his brow furrowing. "Before I lost my memories, did you hug me like this? And I didn’t get angry?"
Chloe Preston looked up, tears shimmering in her eyes. Her voice was muffled, soft, and filled with grievance. "Before, you were always the one who initiated the hugs."
"You liked to grab my waist, you kissed me every day, and you’d always flirt with me. If I said no, you’d find some wicked way to bully me."
"How did I bully you?" Donovan Xavier asked with sincere curiosity.
The driver, who had been eavesdropping on the conversation in the back, took a deep breath as sweat beaded on his forehead.
Seriously? Are they really acting like I don’t exist?
The next second, he raised the privacy partition.
Chloe Preston moved, straddling his lap and unbuckling his belt. She looked at him. "This is how you bullied me."
Donovan Xavier’s eyes widened in shock.
His body went rigid as he shot his hand out to stop her.
"Hey! Have you no shame? Don’t you know what modesty is?"
"Are you like this only with me, or are you this forward with every man?" he asked coldly, though the tips of his ears betrayed him by turning red.
With tears in her eyes, Chloe Preston glared at him. "What do you think?"
Then, she lowered her gaze.
His face went pale, then red. He grabbed her chin with one hand. "Don’t look."
Tears streamed down her cheeks. Chloe Preston’s nose tingled, and she began to pummel his chest, her quiet sniffles turning into heartbreaking sobs. "You bastard! How dare you forget me so easily! Who gave you permission to forget!
"You promised you’d marry me! You said you would make me your Mrs. Xavier and treat me well, and now you don’t remember any of it!
"You broke your word, you liar! I... I don’t want to like you anymore!"
As she spoke, she clutched at his clothes, her cries becoming uncontrollable, her breakdown evoking a sense of overwhelming pity.
Donovan Xavier watched her, and for some reason, he felt a sharp pang in his heart. But she was still a stranger to him. He had no memory of the things she was talking about. Still, he could feel that she was different. That she was important to him.
Donovan Xavier looked down at the woman weeping in his arms, and an unpleasant feeling stirred within him. It seemed he couldn’t stand to see her cry.
For a long moment, she just kept crying.
His brows were tightly furrowed. He didn’t try to push her away again. Instead, he placed a hand on her slender back and patted it gently in a comforting gesture.
"Hey, don’t cry. I’ve only temporarily forgotten, but I’m still me. That hasn’t changed.
"Since you’re my woman and you’re carrying my child, I’ll take responsibility for you.
"Don’t worry, I won’t abandon you. Who knows? I might remember everything one day."
He paused, then raised his hand and used his thumb to wipe the tears from her face. "There now..."
Chloe Preston looked up at him, her eyes red-rimmed. "But what if you never remember?"
Donovan Xavier replied, "Then we’ll just have to start over, right now."
Chloe Preston leaned in closer, her voice catching in a sob. "Then kiss me."
