The Chef Rules the Last Days
Chapter 475 - 473: Mysterious Creature with an Unclear Level
CHAPTER 475: CHAPTER 473: MYSTERIOUS CREATURE WITH AN UNCLEAR LEVEL
Although the Audi car was not built to withstand collisions, the fuel gauge was showing full, a detail that Jianxiong, who was driving, found quite satisfying.
One hour after leaving the protective perimeter of the hotel, the number of zombies in Ao City had increased drastically. To prevent their vehicle from being damaged too early, Jin Han and his teammates’ car took the initiative to form a protective sandwich around them.
Through the fragile window glass, Su Mo watched the zombies that were incessantly pursuing them, only to be swiftly killed. The further they penetrated into the route, the more the number kept shooting up in a straight line.
Ao City was a gambling mecca, boasting hundreds of casinos. Although the meteorite had destroyed many buildings and crushed many people, the number of zombies was nothing short of astonishing.
Because the granary was still teeming with a large number of zombies, they had to conserve their powers along the way to deal with the upcoming events.
Despite the tight protection offered by Jin Han and the others, the Audi did not sustain any damage. However, a few zombies that slipped through the net caught up to the car, their sharp nails instantly piercing the windows. Shards of broken glass and claws came thrusting through the driver’s side window, aiming straight for Jianxiong’s neck.
He gripped the steering wheel with one hand while the bone spurs on his other hand shot out, meeting the glass and the claw head-on. The sharp claws were instantly severed, and Su Mo, reacting just in time, turned her head and locked eyes with the zombie that had shoved its entire head through the window.
With a "bang," its head exploded, splattering black-red blood all over the shattered car. The headless body was quickly caught under the swiftly moving car’s wheels, causing a rough jolt.
Jianxiong, splattered with blood on his face, wiped most of it off and repeatedly expressed his disgust.
Lu Chen, seated in the back, surveyed the surroundings, seeing zombies chasing them at varying speeds on both sides. The leading car had also gradually come to a stop, followed by a loud explosion.
Within his line of sight, a car’s hood flew off, accompanied by thick smoke.
"Something happened up front."
There was no walkie-talkie on their car, and they were unclear about what had happened, but they slowed down and stopped, following the convoy.
The zombies beside them swarmed in instantly, and Su Mo immediately pulled out her Tang Blade, leaping out of the car. After swiftly dealing with the zombies on one side, she then had the chance to observe the situation ahead.
Through the thick black smoke, an abnormally-shaped zombie hunching at the waist with its body leaning back and limbs crawling on the ground leapt off the vehicle with astonishing speed.
Su Mo zoomed in, attempting to track the creature’s movements.
"What kind of monster is this? I can’t perceive its level," Lu Chen said as he stepped out of the car to stand side by side with her in battle, his stern face tinged with a trace of confusion.
Could this creature be even stronger than those they could not detect?
As Su Mo followed the monster’s erratic movements, she used her superpower to slow its actions, enabling her to clearly discern some peculiar features on its body—dark green skin with veins bulging on the surface, something resembling an insect wrapped around its neck, eight leg-like appendages with joints, and a skin-like membrane covering its face.
"What’s this thing on its neck?" she advanced a few steps, trying to get a clearer view, but her efforts were thwarted.
Fang Qing took control of the zombie, and very soon, a Fire Ability User burned off its entire head.
Su Mo withdrew her superpower and jogged forward, Lu Chen following as he noted her serious expression.
The body, carbonized from the shoulders up, had not been stopped in time before someone stomped on the head, crushing the skull to extract the Crystal Stone.
Approaching the corpse, Su Mo also heard Fang Qing’s annoyed voice.
"Piece of junk, practically invisible, almost didn’t notice you."
Invisible?
Su Mo lowered her head and stared at the corpse at her feet. The part above the shoulder had turned to black char, leaving nothing behind, not even a trace of the creature she had just seen.
Lu Chen, seeing her silent, led her back to his car and asked in a deep voice, "What did you just find?"
"I can’t quite describe it, it seemed like some kind of mutated insect, biting on that zombie’s neck," Su Mo tried to recall the scene she had just witnessed. After thinking for a moment, she added, "Did you say you couldn’t see the level of that zombie? I just saw the Crystal Stone in the superpower user’s hands, it was only Level 3, which is clearly not normal."
"Besides, just now Fang Qing obviously used her superpower to catch its trace, never expected it to be fast and able to hide, which cost us a car hood."
Being detectable by a Spiritual Ability but Lu Chen being unable to sense the opponent’s level was too strange. Su Mo’s super-sensitive intuition told her that there was something fishy about the insect-like monster.
Lu Chen pondered for a moment, until the car in front prepared to move again, then he rubbed the top of her head and said, "I’ve noted it, let’s talk more after we get out of here, we have more important things to deal with."
Su Mo nodded her head.
Aside from the two of them, no one paid any attention to this little episode.
They drove from dawn until noon, not stopping until the sun hung high in the sky, when they finally left the city and arrived at the entrance to the grain depot.
Here, there was a concrete road leading directly into the interior of the grain depot. Several large grain unloading trucks lay skewed across the road, blocking it off completely, only allowing two vehicles to pass side by side.
No one acted rashly, for everyone could hear the numerous sharp claws scratching on the metal and the hissing roars.
The trucks blocked not just the road, but also zombies.
Su Mo felt extremely odd when she got out of the car, her ears twitched, and she expressed her confusion, "Isn’t this a grain depot, why are there so many people?"
Fang Qing, who was ahead, turned around to resolve her doubt, "Originally, a group of local tyrants controlled this place, and they were unwilling to release the grain. Before the first black rain came, some people organized several groups to steal grain together. Unfortunately, that evening the first mutated rain fell, leading to the outcome you see now."
Su Mo mulled over these words in her mind, met Fang Qing’s eyes, and said with a smile, "You seem to know a lot about this, did you intentionally block the zombies by placing these trucks here?"
Fang Qing’s coquettish smile froze for a few seconds, then she replied, "Too much imagination isn’t a good thing. Alright, let’s figure out how to get past them and deal with this."
She turned away and began commanding the superpower users around her.
Su Mo stood close to Lu Chen, her smiling face fading, "This matter is indeed linked one ring to another. At the beginning of the apocalypse, they must have wanted to seize the grain depot, and when they likely couldn’t prevail, they thought to use the multitude strategy with ordinary people. Little did they think they’d be shooting themselves in the foot."
"These gamblers, really are awful," Jianxiong snorted disdainfully beside them.
Lu Chen, however, showed no reaction, merely commenting, "They won’t let us take that grain and leave smoothly."
On this point, Su Mo deeply agreed. She clicked her tongue twice, "Without Li Qian, our journey is indeed troublesome."
