CHAPTER 585: CHAPTER 583: THE BEGINNING OF BAD LUCK

However, quite inconveniently, in this wave of zombies, suddenly a Level 5 Zombie burst out from within. Round after round of evolution resulted in its hands completely devolving into a creature with only three razor-sharp claws, and the propelling force of its legs was astonishing.

Jianxiong barely dodged that strike, but Li He’s heart was clearly seized with anxiety. He couldn’t help but speak out, "Doesn’t anyone worry that he might get hurt?"

In the two vehicles, surprisingly, no one went down to help. Leaning against the seat, Su Mo smiled and said, "You’re here for that, and this is a good training opportunity for Jianxiong."

Jianxiong cast off the bulky coat he was wearing, his body swelling in size. He directly kicked away the zombies crowding around him and took a runner’s stance, charging towards the remarkably springy zombie.

He grabbed it by the waist, carrying both their bodies to smash through the brick wall, creating an avenue of light in what was previously a dead-end alley.

Li Qian’s complexion changed, and he muttered, "This is bad."

He had not expected Jianxiong to directly demolish the wall so violently.

Behind the wall was a large horde of zombies crammed around a building.

The smile froze on Su Mo’s face.

Zhao Changsheng even slapped Li Qian’s hand in the vehicle behind, exclaiming, "Damn it! Why didn’t you say there were so many zombies behind that wall!"

Li Qian reluctantly picked up the walkie-talkie, looking at her and said, "I didn’t expect him to be able to break through the alley wall directly..."

Receiving Li Qian’s belated message, Lu Chen also felt somewhat speechless. His hand reached out of the window, and an invisible disturbance emitted from the palm of his hand, condensing a spatial rift in front of Jianxiong, "Come back."

It wasn’t until Jianxiong had plucked the Crystal Stone from the zombie’s skull that he realized something was wrong. As the zombies slowly turned around and lunged at him, Li He’s hand clenched the car door, nearly bursting out to run down. Fortunately, Jianxiong’s dive was swift, and just as the first zombie’s claws reached him, he rolled into the fissure that Lu Chen had torn open.

The next second, he appeared right beside the car door. Jianxiong threw open the door and sat down hard, "Quick, quick, quick! Damn it! There are so many zombies here!"

Lucky it was Lu Chen driving. The two vehicles made a hasty retreat from the alley. Any plans to take a shortcut by turning corners were also instantly squashed.

Both cars floored the accelerator, speeding through the city. Encountering zombies that pounced directly at them, Li Qian’s car leading the way now rammed and sent that physique flying. A severed hand got caught under the tire and smashed directly onto the hood of Lu Chen’s car.

Su Mo turned back to look at the horde of zombies behind them, which had followed in hundreds due to the commotion Jianxiong had just caused, either running or crawling behind them.

They stepped onto cars, shattered windows, and chased after their vehicles relentlessly.

Li Qian’s spiritual power spread rapidly, swiftly charting out the quickest route from the dense urban buildings.

"There’s a tunnel up ahead not far. Don’t need to get off the expressway to divert, just charge through it and then circle around. There are quite a few zombies inside, prepare for impact."

Li Qian’s voice came through Lu Chen’s walkie-talkie, and after he replied, he pressed the accelerator to the floor, the tires underneath nearly sparking with friction.

The tunnel, known as Mountain River, emerged in front of their cars—its gaping maw pitch-black like the abyss of a wild beast. Su Mo immediately switched to night vision to shrink the viewing distance, observing the situation on both sides in a timely fashion.

They followed Li Qian’s car straight into the pitch-black tunnel.

All over were discarded beverage cans and rusted old cars messily strewn throughout the tunnel. Although they did not cause a traffic jam, such a setting demanded high driving skills. Both cars turned on their headlights, but in the darkness, they often had only a five-to-six-meter distance to react and evade after seeing objects clearly.

This greatly tested the skills of the two.

Of course, this wasn’t the end of their troubles. Aside from the hordes of zombies following closely behind them in the tunnel, issuing echoing roars, the ceiling of the tunnel was home to clusters of bats that were startled into flight, one wave after another.

Following the light, they flapped their black wings, their skeletal frames stretching out, their sharp little claws scratching at the front of the vehicle.

Unfortunately, the headlights of both armored vehicles were shattered by those numerous sharp claws.

With the lightbulbs destroyed, there wasn’t a hint of light in their sight. Li Qian had spiritual power to navigate, but Lu Chen clearly didn’t have it so easy.

Zhao Changsheng’s voice came through the walkie-talkie, "Momo, can you see? I will release Thunder, remember to watch the road."

Su Mo, however, could see everything clearly and said, "No need, I can be his eyes."

The tunnel was too dark, but Lu Chen wasn’t entirely without night vision ability; it was just much weaker compared to Su Mo’s special eye abilities. His braking and steering never ceased, and neither did Su Mo’s instructions. The tunnel was too long, and the obstacles were excessively numerous.

These bats, having lost their light, didn’t continue chasing their vehicle either.

This state lasted for a full ten minutes before light from outside finally shone into the tunnel.

Exiting the tunnel, one vehicle after the other, because of the obstructing obstacles, most of the zombies were successfully blocked. They had escaped the pursuit of the massive zombie horde.

Su Mo finally let out a sigh of relief, "That was so thrilling."

Li He also experienced this kind of extreme driving skill with tight turns and jolts for the first time. His complexion turned a bit pale, feeling a storm churning in his stomach, and he couldn’t help but say, "Have we gotten away from those monsters?"

"Yes, we have."

Receiving Su Mo’s affirmative answer, Li He patted his chest and said with difficulty, "Can we stop the car? I feel like I’m going to throw up."

Lu Chen told Li Qian in the leading vehicle to take a short break and then pulled over to the side of the road. Li He flung open the car door and staggered out, his stomach convulsing uncontrollably.

Jianxiong also got out of the car and placed his hand on Li He’s back, giving it a pat, "It’s okay, you’ll feel better after throwing up."

His cautious actions now were much gentler than when they first met.

Su Mo also felt a sore backside from sitting too long and now got out to stretch her legs.

She watched Lu Chen clean off some scraps of flesh stuck on the hood of the engine and then took out the map to check their route.

Li Qian walked over from the front, "The sun is about to set; let’s drive a bit further and find a place to camp for the night."

After comparing the routes, Lu Chen said, "We need at least another week to enter the mountain forest and find that place."

"With a two-year countdown, if that place is intact and as expected, we will have more time to survive on the surface," Li Qian said, looking up at the sky which was dyed a deep blue with touches of orange, his eyes filled with fascination.
