CHAPTER 51: MODERN BATHROOMS ARE WORTH MORE THAN GOLD!

’So that’s why he can’t stay with anyone.’ Dante thought as he looked at the wanted poster.

A single medium-sized mana crystal was equivalent to 10 small ones, and a Grade 4 artifact was something Dante had never seen so far.

With such a high reward, there were definitely a lot of people searching for him. In fact, Dante himself had the urge to search for him now.

’I mean... his mother should be worried. Bringing him to her is just the duty of any real man.’

Sighing helplessly, Dante shifted his gaze toward the counter and walked toward it. As he approached the women, they suddenly gave him a piece of paper before he could say anything.

"Here is the menu." One of the women said indifferently as she covered her nose.

’Why is everyone here so sensitive?!’

Dante sighed as he handed Elizabeth the menu: "Sorry, I’m here to register as a mercenary first."

"Oh, both of you?"

Dante and Elizabeth nodded.

The woman stood up and pointed at a door: "Follow me, we have to perform a few tests first."

Dante and Elizabeth nodded again as they followed her into a large room. The room contained only a table where an old woman sat with a black orb in front of her.

’What a waste of empty space.’

The old woman noticed them instantly as she smiled: "Ohoho, finally a job for me."

The woman in black suit nodded as she led Dante and Elizabeth in front of the table.

’This black orb...’ Dante recognised the orb on the table immediately. He himself had one similar.

"Do you trust each other?" The old woman asked.

"Yes." Elizabeth answered immediately.

Dante hesitated for a few minutes before answering: "Yeah, a little."

The old woman pointed at the chair on the other side of the table: "Decide who will register first."

Dante looked at Elizabeth and said: "You can go first."

"Mhm." Elizabeth gave Dante a nod before sitting on the chair.

The woman in a black suit brought a pen and a piece of paper, preparing herself to write something, as the old woman said: "You seem to be blind. In front of you, there is an orb that can show us your runes, revealing everything about you. You can either use it to register quickly, or not use it and answer a few questions."

"I’ll use it." Elizabeth placed her hand on the orb. A moment later, her runes appeared.

’It’s... simple.’

Elizabeth had only two traits, only one domain, only one aspect, and only one class ability.

Dante, on the other hand, had a complete mess in his runes.

’I’m rather surprised by her vitality, but 7 of them are from absorbing cores so it’s understandable.’

"You can take off your hand now." The old woman said as her smile seemed brighter than before: "Now, I’ll just ask you a few questions."

"Mhm."

For the next few minutes, she asked Elizabeth a few normal questions like her experiences, spells, professions, and so on.

She even asked about any feats she had, which made her tell the woman about the village and a few other things.

Soon enough, it was Dante’s turn.

Elizabeth stood up and Dante sat instead of her as he said: "Sorry, I won’t use this."

The old woman nodded: "It’s understandable. We’ll have to do it the old way then. Tell us what you can share."

Dante nodded as he thought about what to share and how to hide his race.

’Does she have an ability similar to Elizabeth’s?’

That seemed possible judging by how she was ready to trust his answers.

After thinking for a few moments, Dante opened his mouth: "My name is Dante, 16 years old, and I’m essentially a human."

The old woman nodded as she waited for him to continue without a change in expression.

’It worked!’

Dante had lived as a human for 16 years, and his soul was that of a human. So technically, he didn’t say a single lie.

Unknown to him, the World Runes had modified his soul itself into that of a demonic dragon.

Dante continued: "I have the Shadow Aspect, the Sorcerer’s Gift trait, and a good class. As for my stats, none of them is below 30 in value."

The woman raised an eyebrow: "You have high stats for such a young age. Can you tell me about your background and rank?"

Dante replied: "Rank 1, of course. And I’m an orphan. Don’t ask about how I got high stats."

"I understand." The woman smiled: "Last five questions."

"What can you do with the Shadow Aspect?"

"I can use it normally, and I’m a bit confident in mimicking light and fire. Oh, ans recently, I mimicked a space spell. They’re focused on offense and defence rather than support, though.

"Do you know how to use any specific weapon?"

Dante nodded: "Someone trustworthy told me that I’m a talented swordsman."

"Do you have any feats that deserve acknowledgement?"

Dante nodded as he glanced at Elizabeth: "I was with her in saving that village."

"Did you kill anything before? And were there innocents among them?"

Dante nodded again: "I killed goblins, skeletons, shadow monsters, some random animals, and humans. I don’t think any of them were considered innocent."

The woman nodded: "Were you acknowledged by the runes before?"

"Yes."

The woman in black suit looked at Dante in surprise, but didn’t say anything.

"I think we’re done here." The old woman’s smile widened: "You’ll get your licences in a few hours. If you don’t have a place to stay the night, I suggest you rent a room and... take a shower..."

’Damn you!’

Dante sighed as he finally stood up and asked for a room for him and Elizabeth to stay the night.

They paid 4 silver coins for a night in a room with a bathroom, a kitchen, and two beds, and 2 gold coins for their mercenary licences.

’Fucking scam!’

Finally, they left and went to their room.

As they entered the room, Dante’s eyes sparkled instantly.

Unlike his former inn room, this room was warmer than outside and was big in size. It had a closet, two medium-sized beds, and a proper table with four good-looking chairs.

There were a few windows and oil lanterns to illuminate the room, and there was a door on the side that seemed to lead to the bathroom. On the other side, the kitchen was exposed without doors.

Ignoring Elizabeth, Dante rushed to the bathroom door and pushed it open.

"It’s... it’s real."

As the door opened, Dante wiped a real tear as he scanned the bathroom.

There was a wooden seat with a hole in the middle of it. When Dante looked closer, he noticed two major things.

First thing, he couldn’t see the end of that hole. He tried to throw a rock of mana inside and waited. After a while, he still didn’t hear anything.

’Are the toilets here leading to the abyss?’

The second thing he noticed was a small, blue runic formula on the wall. Above it, the word ’Channel Mana’ was engraved.

Dante placed his finger on it and channeled his mana into the runic formula. Immediately, water started splashing out the seat’s hole.

Dante recognised the mechanism instantly: ’It’s like the one in the Dragon Palace!’

It seemed the people in this world had a few things which were similar to the modern Earth. They used runes to replace the advanced technology on Earth.

The Dragon Palace had a few things like toilets and showers, but when Dante saw the village, he lost hope of seeing similar stuff.

Thankfully, this town had them.

Excited, Dante went to the other side of the bathroom. As expected, it had a shower with some runes to shoot water and heat it up.

"Elizabeth..." Dante called as he walked to the door.

Elizabeth was lying peacefully on her bed, resting her head on her large backpack. Once she heard him, she turned her head immediately: "You finally remembered me?"

Dante smiled: "Just wanted to say... I’ll use the bathroom for a few hours."

"Wha—!"

BAM!

Dante closed the door, took off his clothes, and retrieved a few items from his ring.

All his bloody and dirty clothes, the soap he had bought, and a towel.

’Fafnir, no more of debts, no more of illnesses and cripples, no more of starving and eating expired food, no more of using tree leaves to wipe, no more of dirty smell, no more of living without a roof, no more of torn clothes, no more of enduring cold... and no more of collecting trash to live.’

’I only have to fix the problem of my misfortune... and everything else is solved, right?’

Fafnir nodded silently. It was nice to see his master genuinely happy for just a bathroom.
