CHAPTER 72: 72: AN AWAKENING

Angelo

We couldn’t afford to waste any time. Our mate is in grave danger, and that was clear enough that we didn’t need a diagnosis first. However, we did send for the palace’s healer immediately.

After doing that, we moved her right into Landon’s room. Well, it was more like Landon made that decision himself, cause he was the one who carried her in his arms as we left the rooftop, all the while still scenting her.

Why was him scenting her working? It wasn’t supposed to because they weren’t bonded, but we were all relieved that at least something was making a little difference. She was presently breathing again, although it was shallow as hell, and very slow.

There wasn’t even time for us to punish the guards who put her in this state, or send for our new brides and demand an explanation, all of that would have to wait till Sue was out of danger.

My heart was racing fast and I hated to admit it but I was genuinely worried for her, and it wasn’t just because she’s the one to help us break our curse. I felt genuine worry within me, she might be annoying as hell, her father might be responsible for our mother’s death, but I still didn’t want her to die. I hate to see her this way, weak, struggling to breathe, and fighting for her life, when she’s supposed to be scowling at us and mouthing off at us till we’d have to remind her to not forget who she’s speaking to. I hadn’t even realized how much I enjoyed those chaotic exchanges, and how I secretly liked that she never lost her defiance towards us... till this very moment that she’s unconscious.

Landon was beside her in his bed, still scenting her, and his scent had completely filled up the room, tinged with panic and worry. As I watched him gently stroke her hair out of her face, I wondered if he realized how much he was fussing over her right now. Should I point that out to him right now, I’m certain he’d pull away from her right now, but this close proximity is exactly what Damon figured out was helping Sue, along with the scenting.

If I tried to scent her right now, would it have any effect on her as well? After all, I was her fated mate like Landon is.

"The doctor is here!" A voice announced from outside the door, then he was being ushered in. As he stepped towards the bed after bowing in respect, Landon moved away to grant full access to the doctor. Damon, who had been leaning against the wall at the far corner of this room, came close to stand beside me as we both stared down at Sue. I noted that her chest was barely moving, and once again, I really hoped that she wouldn’t die.

"Oh." The doctor said after a few minutes of examining her, and I felt the panic within me heightened.

"What’s the matter with her? Is she gonna be okay?" Landon demanded before any of us could, and when the doctor remained silent, I realized that I was being tempted to punch him. Apparently, I was able to fight down my own urge compared to Damon, who lounged at the doctor but I managed to pull him back.

The doctor looked panicked right now as Damon was speaking. "We asked a simple question which we believed deserved an answer. Is she gonna be okay??!"

The doctor looked pale, and as his glasses slipped down his nose, he righted it With shaky hands, then he was shaking his head and nodding his head at the same time.

"Are you dumb? What does that mean?" I growled and this time, the doctor flinched before pointing towards Sue.

"L- let me start from the top, your majesties."

Landon glared at the doctor, clearly reaching the edge of his patience. "Well, get on with it."

"It seems like the amount of beatings she received had managed to surge up her soul, leading it to push out the other part of her that’s locked away in the deepest part of her soul."

My brothers and I exchanged glances. What this doctor just said made no sense.

As if sensing our confusion, the doctor rushed to add. "From all the signs I’m seeing, it seems like she’s a hybrid."

My brothers and I exchanged another look. Of course, we were aware of that.

"And?" Damon barked and the doctor flinched before continuing.

"The surge in her energy has caused the other half of her to demand an awakening." He finally revealed and I frowned.

"Oh, that’s it? Then, how’s the awakening gonna take place? And is she gonna be fine?" Landon asked and the doctor had a pinched expression on as he shook his head, holding a hand up.

"That’s the thing, it’s not guaranteed. Her life is on the line right now, cause an awakening like this is usually not successful, especially in her present state. She might not make it."

It felt like everything crashed to the ground around me after those words.

"What’s the other part of her? The one that needs an awakening." Damon asked.

"It’s part warlock, your majesty."

My eyes widened as I exchanged looks with my brothers. That was the last thing I expected the other part of her to be. Thinking about it right now, how is she half warlock? She has two werewolf parents, right? So... how is it possible?"

"So, what are we to do in this situation? What are the options." Landon demanded almost immediately.

"There’s a thirty percent chance that she’ll survive, and a seventy percent chance that she’ll not make it. It’s more crucial for her cause her warlock awakening would come with powers, and we’ll, that requires more strength, which she clearly lacks in this state." The doctor paused before continuing, his eyes moving between us.

"If she survives the shift, she’ll have powers— warlock abilities. But you have to put in mind that she might truly not survive."

"Is there a way to stop this... awakening? Since it might take her life, it seems stupid to have her go through it." I spoke up this time.

"Usually, it’s almost impossible to stop an awakening when it starts, unless the person is a really powerful being. However, since you’re all her fated mates, you can put an end to the shrug if you each bite and mark her."

It felt like the world went still around me, and no one spoke. It was so silent that a drop of water hitting the ground would undoubtedly make a sound right now.

"What?" Damon was the first to speak, and I couldn’t agree more.

What the..?

"That’s the only way to stop the shrug. If you don’t do it, she might die. But if you do it, the bond would kill off that other part of her, then she’ll no longer be a hybrid, but a full wolf."

I frowned. That was a huge ass decision to make about her life when she’s unconscious.

And besides, to bite and mark her? Doing that against her will just seems like it was gonna cause more harm than good. Number one, there’s our father. Should he know that we’re presently treating Sue, he’d start putting attention on her again and would undoubtedly try to eliminate her.

"Is there no other way?" Damon demanded, while Landon sighed.

"Yes, a different way would surely be better for everyone."

The doctor slowly shook his head. "I’m sorry, your majesties, but that is the only way."

Damn.

The only way?

That’s crazy.

"Please leave us for now, we’ll send for you in a bit." I breathed out and the doctor bowed before leaving, then we were alone with our mate once again.

"That’s absurd. Surely you’re not seriously considering doing that, are you?" Damon demanded as he looked between Landon and I. Landon had a scowl on his face as he looked over as Damon.

"I don’t understand you right now, are you saying we let her die just like that?" He barked and Damon sighed, dragging a hand over his face.

"Getting bonded to her just seems crazy to me, but of course I don’t want her to die, after all, our curse—"

"Even outside the curse, she doesn’t deserve to die, dumb ass." I muttered as I massaged my forehead, feeling like my head was gonna blow from how hard it was pounding.

"Well, I don’t want her to die either way. But biting her for anything aside from feeding on her blood, is kinda nuts to me." Damon grumbled, and Landon looked like he was seconds away from lounging at Damon.

"If you’re both so opposed to the thought of marking her, perhaps we could call in the T triplets. They’d definitely be more eager to save her, even though they just discovered that she’s their mate today." Landon bit out and rage instantly filled my veins at that suggestion.
