CHAPTER 41: 41: REGRETTING PAST DECISIONS (PART 2)_1
This person’s surname was Fang, and she was one of the yamen officers, but she strongly disapproved of Liu Xiu’s overbearing style.
"Officer Han ordered us to apprehend Liang Yixuan and bring him back for the case, not to use our own power to oppress the common people," she stated.
Fang Lanshan was a person with a strong sense of justice, but Liu Xiu believed Fang Lanshan was challenging her authority, and this made her even angrier.
"Miss Fang, you are meddling a bit too much in the business of others. As long as you don’t end up killing someone, it’s fine," she hinted to her minions with a glance. Swords were sheathed, but fists and feet flew mercilessly toward Yue Ning.
"Fifth Brother?" Yixuan cried out in urgency, but he could do nothing as he had already been shackled, forced to watch helplessly as the female yamen officers overwhelmed Yue Ning with their numbers.
Yue Ning had previously been attacked by Zhu Xingfang, struck in the back of the head with a club, and he hadn’t yet recovered from that head injury, suffering from a serious concussion. From yesterday to today, he felt dizzy and swarmy but had been enduring it to avoid worrying Yixuan. However, the long trek back from town today had left him utterly exhausted, and if not for his extraordinary willpower, he might have already passed out in front of Yixuan.
With a head injury, clouded consciousness, and no match for his former agility, plus being outnumbered, Yue Ning was quickly overwhelmed and put at a disadvantage.
Fang Lanshan watched with a deep frown, feeling a genuine loathing for Liu Xiu’s behavior.
"Enough, if you don’t stop now, you’re really going to kill someone," she warned.
Liu Xiu also realized this, but was still upset about Fang Lanshan’s interference. She pouted her lips, cursed under her breath, and then, with a noisy crowd behind her, she pushed the bound Liang Yixuan away.
As Fang Lanshan looked back at Yue Ning, she couldn’t help but sigh, then followed the main troop and left.
Only after Liu Xiu and the rest had gone far away did Liang Yuening manage to rise from the ground.
His appearance was disheveled, with much blood covering him, and just as he straightened, his vision started to blacken.
He bit the tip of his tongue to keep himself alert, then staggered out of the village...
......
"Fourth Brother, where is Third Brother?"
Yue Ning rushed in rashly, and at that moment Shujun came in leisurely holding a jug of wine, looking relaxed and content. But upon entering and seeing Yue Ning covered in blood, Shujun’s eyes narrowed, and he instinctively looked at Dong Huiying with a mix of doubt, annoyance, and hatred in his piercing, narrow phoenix eyes.
Dong Huiying felt like she had been stung. She had already learned from Yue Ning of the vile things Da Bao had done to his own brothers. Confronted with Shujun’s gaze, she immediately understood.
He suspected her, thinking she had beaten Yue Ning, believing that Yue Ning’s injuries were her doing?
Dong Huiying felt a wrench in her heart.
Stumbling, Yue Ning moved toward Shujun: "Third Brother, the Department of Surveillance, they’ve sent people, and they’ve taken Yixuan away."
Shujun was taken aback, then felt as if his mind had suddenly emptied out.
"The Department of Surveillance?" His complexion turned ashen, and despite his usual worldly, carefree demeanor, he appeared shocked and frightened, as if he couldn’t accept the sudden bad news.
Yixuan had been arrested, but why? Everything was fine, why would the Department of Surveillance take Yixuan?
"Third Brother!"
A loud shout from Yue Ning snapped Shujun back to reality.
Shujun took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down.
"Let’s not panic," he told his two younger brothers. "Even if it is the Department of Surveillance, they have to abide by reason. Yixuan hasn’t violated any laws, so why, why would he be arrested by the Department of Surveillance?"
Yue Ning looked pale. "I don’t know. I tried to stop the yamen officers from taking Yixuan away, but I was useless, I couldn’t stop them, and in the end, Yixuan was still taken away by those yamen officers."
He had been there, he was older than Yixuan, he was Yixuan’s brother, but he had failed to protect Yixuan, feeling utterly useless, nearly drowning in the surging guilt within him...
