Liu Banxia, stuck in the emergency department, had no idea that his performance had brought such a significant impact to the Second Hospital. Now he was quietly reading.
As he was engrossed, he noticed a shadow looming over him. He looked up to find Qiaoqiao standing in front of him, hands on her hips.
"What are you doing? Why’d you take off your back brace? Aren’t you afraid of throwing your back out again?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Tell me, why did you hang up on my video call?" Qiaoqiao asked.
"I had surgery to do. Be good, don’t fuss. Go home and play with Tang Dou," Liu Banxia said, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
He really hadn’t expected this girl to come all this way just to ask this question.
"Then you should have told me so I could hang up first. Isn’t that right?" Qiaoqiao argued logically.
"Okay, okay, that was my oversight. Next time, I’ll let you hang up first. I’m studying here; I need to learn," Liu Banxia said, feeling helpless.
"That’s more like it. When are we going for a meal? Today at noon? Or tonight?" Qiaoqiao asked.
"I really don’t have time. I can only get one day off a week at most. If nobody takes over my shift, I have to keep working non-stop," Liu Banxia said.
"What kind of work is this? Are you just working here or making a selfless contribution?" Qiaoqiao frowned, raising her voice a little.
"Good heavens, can you lower your voice?" Liu Banxia said, hurriedly pulling her to sit down.
"I got a promotion, didn’t I? So I have more things to do. After I get through this year, I’ll become an attending physician. Understand now? Go home and take care of Tang Dou; otherwise, it’ll definitely be desperate to go out," he said.
"No need. It’s quite happy hopping around on its three legs. Stop changing the subject. You have to eat, right? Or should I have food delivered here?" Qiaoqiao said.
"Please don’t! It wouldn’t look good. Another day, okay? I’ll contact you when I have time," Liu Banxia said quickly.
"Are you trying to take advantage of me?" Qiaoqiao’s eyes widened as soon as he finished speaking, much to his surprise.
He now felt Qiaoqiao was a bit of a sorceress; her thinking was a little simplistic, but she harbored no ill intentions.
"What are you staring at? You’ve got some sleep in the corner of your eye," Liu Banxia retorted, glaring back at her.
Qiaoqiao was startled and hurriedly took a small mirror out of her bag to check carefully.
"I was just saying it offhandedly. Go hang out with your besties. This is a hospital; we still have work to do," Liu Banxia said.
"Tsk! You’re not a good person. Full of lewd thoughts, but no courage to act on them!" Qiaoqiao scoffed, pouting. Then, holding her head high, she walked away with a victorious stride.
Liu Banxia shook his head helplessly. He usually didn’t feel old at all; in fact, he felt very young. But now? He felt completely out of touch with this generation. Had the world really changed this fast?
Just as he looked away, he saw Liang Xiaolin nearby, also glaring at him intently.
"What’s wrong with you now? Do you want to treat me to a meal too?" Liu Banxia exclaimed, thoroughly exasperated.
Liang Xiaolin’s face instantly turned bright red. She mouthed something at Liu Banxia. Judging by her lip movements, it was probably, "Not a good person."
Liu Banxia was speechless. How on earth was he not a good person? He cared for his patients, looked out for his colleagues, and even gave resident doctors more hands-on opportunities during surgeries. He should be considered a great guy, right?
"Liu, are you busy?"
Just then, Jiang Tao from the Proctology Department strolled over.
"Oh, Director Jiang, please sit. I’m actually not busy right now," Liu Banxia said hurriedly.
"If you’re not busy, I’d like to schedule you to come over and give us another demonstration on changing dressings," Jiang Tao said with a smile.
"Some of our doctors will be returning to their original hospitals soon, and they can’t stop talking about your dressing change technique. They mentioned it to me, so what else could I do? We absolutely have to invite President Liu over."
DING! Task Issued: Jiang Tao’s Invitation
Open Task: Proctology Director Jiang Tao highly values the host’s dressing change technique and invites him to teach it again. Task rewards will be distributed based on the teaching outcome.
"My goodness, Director Jiang, if you praise me this highly, aren’t you afraid I’ll fall and shatter?" Liu Banxia said with a wry smile.
"What time would you like me to come over? I’ll head straight there then. Dr. Shi is here today too, so I should be able to make time. As long as no emergency resuscitations come in, it should be fine," Liu Banxia said.
"Alright, I’ll go have a word with Director Zhou. If you’re free after lunch, just head over. You can’t just demonstrate; you also need to explain the techniques to them," Jiang Tao nodded, in a very good mood.
The current Liu Banxia could indeed be called the man of the hour. He wasn’t just performing brilliantly in the emergency department; his skills in surgery and his reputation outside the Second Hospital were also excellent. Yet, when interacting with me, he remains as respectful as ever. That’s a good kid, unlike others who get arrogant after a little success.
"Banxia, do you think that girl has taken a liking to you?" Zhou Li leaned in close to Liu Banxia.
Liu Banxia gave her a reproachful look. "Sister Li, what are you even talking about? She’s probably from a wealthy family and is used to getting the best of everything and having everyone listen to her."
"Have you talked to Old Wang about it? When buying a house, you shouldn’t just make the decision all by yourself. Even though Old Wang doesn’t have a high status at home, you still need to show him proper respect," Zhou Li advised.
"What did he grumble to you about?" Zhou Li’s eyes instantly widened.
"Oh, come on, what would Old Wang dare to say? It’s just that we outsiders can’t stand to see it anymore; you treat him like a little mouse," Liu Banxia said hurriedly.
Zhou Li’s expression instantly changed to a bright smile. "You still don’t know his personality? If you talked to him about these things, he’d just find it annoying. When it comes to renovations, I’ll have to organize everything. He wouldn’t even bother to look at it."
"And you, watch yourself. Don’t be eating from your bowl while eyeing what’s in the basin and still coveting what’s in the pot. That’s not acceptable. Even though it’s a common failing in men, you need to be mindful."
After saying this, Zhou Li moved over to Xu Dan, and the two of them started whispering about something again.
Liu Banxia felt overwhelmed. To him, even facing another patient with hemorrhagic shock seemed preferable to what he had just endured. Who had he provoked or annoyed? I’m such a hardworking, handsome young man! Why isn’t anyone praising me? Why are they only finding fault?
"Come quickly! Tongtong’s father is here." Just as Liu Banxia picked up his book again, Liang Xiaolin ran over and yanked him to his feet.
"What Tongtong—"
Liu Banxia trailed off. A man emerged from the corridor, cradling a very small infant in his arms—it was indeed the baby he had personally admitted in the emergency room some time ago.
"Doctor Liang, Dr. Liu, thank you. The pediatrics department said he’s all right now, and we can take him home," Tongtong’s father said.
"Oh, please don’t thank me. Doctor Liang has mentioned your gratitude several times; there’s really no need. This little guy is sleeping so soundly. The last time I saw him was in pediatrics. May I hold him?" Liu Banxia asked with a smile.
Tongtong’s father nodded and carefully handed the little one to Liu Banxia.
As he was transferred, the baby seemed a bit restless, his small lips pursing, but he continued to sleep soundly.
Even though some time had passed since his birth, the little one was still light due to being premature. Yet, Liu Banxia felt a profound weight in his arms. This was a tiny life he had fought to save, and the feeling of holding him was truly wonderful.
