CHAPTER 147: DR. LIU’S ’TRAINING METHOD’ 147

Liu Banxia upheld his promise and treated everyone to an extra braised pork knuckle at noon. Anyway, the cafeteria owner, Zhou Qiang, was very happy this month because Liu Banxia had boosted the cafeteria’s sales.

"Dr. Liang, what do you think of Qing Kewa?" After the meal, Liu Banxia pulled Liang Xiaolin aside.

Liang Xiaolin gave him a strange look. "She’s tall, has a good figure. What more do you want?"

Liu Banxia rolled his eyes. "What on earth are you thinking about all day? You’re a female doctor, not a female pervert. I’m asking about her performance in terms of medical skills, her grasp of the basics."

"Oh, I thought when you, of all people, mentioned a ’promising seedling,’ you were referring to *that* aspect. How would I know about her actual skills? It’s not something you can just see," Liang Xiaolin said, grinning.

Liu Banxia felt a little awkward. It seemed Liang Xiaolin had deciphered the hidden meaning of the term ’promising seedling.’

"We are doctors; we must maintain a meticulous attitude," Liu Banxia said with a straight face.

Liang Xiaolin pouted. Hmph, you and your scheming mind. Always wanting more, eyeing everything in sight. Who are *you* trying to be meticulous with?

"Dr. Zhang, I need to discuss something with you." Liu Banxia then went over to Zhang Yun, who was on duty in the emergency department today.

"What is it? I’ll have to think it over," Zhang Yun joked.

"Come on, Dr. Zhang, don’t you start acting like them too. Isn’t Qing Kewa assigned to me for training? If there are any dressing changes or suturing cases this afternoon, please let me have them. I want to see how her fundamentals are," Liu Banxia said.

Zhang Yun nodded. "I couldn’t ask for more. So, she’s your second apprentice, huh? I heard Dr. Liang is about to complete her training soon; her closed thoracic drainage procedure last night was very well done."

Liu Banxia didn’t know what to say. They were all attending physicians, yet they were teasing him as if he were just a kid.

Liu Banxia called Qing Kewa over. "Qing Kewa, you’ve had all morning. Are you familiar with the layout of the emergency department by now?"

"Yes, Dr. Liu, I’m very familiar with it now," Qing Kewa replied, nodding vigorously.

"If another trauma patient comes in later, the debridement or suturing will be yours to handle. This way, I can see what your skill level is like and then formulate a training plan for you," Liu Banxia said.

"Is it the same kind of training plan as Dr. Liang’s?" Qing Kewa asked, her eyes shining.

"Qing Kewa, what training plan does he have for *me*?" Liang Xiaolin, who was listening nearby, asked in confusion.

"Everyone says Dr. Liu is amazing. You were trained by him for only a short time, and you became very skilled too. They also say that Dr. Liu only teaches those he deems worth cultivating personally, even guiding their hands," Qing Kewa said, as if it were a matter of course.

Hearing this, Liu Banxia felt a bit awkward, while Liang Xiaolin blushed deeply.

The two of them did have a ’prior incident,’ after all; a ’miraculous’ scene had once played out in the operating room. And after that ’personal, hands-on’ teaching session, Liang Xiaolin’s suturing skills indeed seemed to have improved somewhat.

Qing Kewa became rather curious. She didn’t understand why the atmosphere had turned a bit unusual after she spoke. Is this also due to differences in national customs? Isn’t this how one is supposed to give praise?

"AHEM, rest assured, I will definitely guide you seriously. However, this is also my first time formally training someone, so I’m not that experienced yet. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask Dr. Liang or me," Liu Banxia said, coughing lightly to dispel the awkwardness.

Liang Xiaolin glared at him before walking off to the side.

She was furious! The rumors must have spread throughout the hospital by now. How could she face anyone in the future? Even Qing Kewa knew about it! Liu Banxia is the main culprit! Even if you wanted to teach suturing, shouldn’t you have given me a heads-up first? You can only teach if I agree, damn it! If you’re so capable, go hold Qing Kewa’s hand and teach her!

"What’s wrong?" Zhou Li came over, smiling.

"Sister Li, being chief resident might not kill me from exhaustion, but mentoring these two girls probably will," Liu Banxia lamented.

Zhou Li blinked. "Don’t cause an international incident. It has to be consensual, you know."

Liu Banxia was truly exasperated. What kind of person did they all take him for?

"Dr. Liu, there’s a patient with an elbow abrasion needing debridement," Shen Lin from the Triage Desk called out just then.

"Alright. Treatment Room... Two will do. Qing Kewa, Liang Xiaolin, with me," Liu Banxia called out.

Banter was banter, but serious work still had to be done. He was treating Qing Kewa’s training as part of an assessment from Zhou Shuwen, so he had to handle it well.

"You’ve injured your left elbow and left knee. That was quite a nasty fall; the wound surfaces are quite large. Do you want to take off your clothes yourself, or should we cut open your sleeves and pant legs?" Liu Banxia asked after a quick glance.

He had to ask this. Even though the clothes were already torn from the fall, what if the patient said they could be patched up and worn again? If he just cut them open without asking, he might end up having to pay compensation.

"Go ahead and cut them. I fell off my bicycle. Drivers these days, sigh... they don’t look before opening their car doors when parked," the patient said with a helpless sigh.

"Yeah, one really has to be careful when passing parked cars. Liang Xiaolin, you handle the debridement for the elbow. Qing Kewa, you take care of the debridement for the knee," Liu Banxia said casually.

"Doctors, with three of you treating me, you won’t charge extra, will you? That driver only compensated me five hundred yuan," the patient asked, a little worried.

"Haha, don’t worry. Regardless of how many doctors are present, the charges are based on your injuries," Liu Banxia said, amused.

"You can consider yourself our lucky patient today. Qing Kewa just arrived at the Second Hospital, and you’re the very first patient she’s treating here. If you’re feeling it, you might want to spend a couple of yuan on a lottery ticket when you get home."

"Haha, that’s a good idea!" The patient was also amused by him.

His lightheartedness, however, ended there. Because elbows and knees have less fatty tissue, abrasions in these areas can be quite severe. Although the wounds weren’t particularly deep or dirty, the affected area was large.

Moreover, some skin was also torn, requiring patient debridement. Treating such wounds, where skin was partially torn but still attached, was actually more troublesome than those where an entire patch of skin had been scraped clean off.

The difference between Liang Xiaolin and Qing Kewa immediately became apparent.

Liang Xiaolin had learned her debridement technique from Liu Banxia. Although she wasn’t as fast as him, she paid more attention to the patient’s comfort. Qing Kewa, on the other hand, prioritized efficiency and results. Her technique was somewhat rougher, making the patient wince in pain at times.

However, this wasn’t to say Qing Kewa had no merits. Her debridement was more thorough. Moreover, during the process, she wasn’t swayed by the patient’s reactions, remaining focused solely on the wound itself.

Liu Banxia could only apologize to the patient in his heart. If he intervened now, it might make the patient lose trust in Qing Kewa and also undermine her confidence.

Now he finally understood how Shi Lei must have felt. It must have been exhausting for Shi Lei when he was mentoring him back then. After all, his own hands had been quite clumsy; frankly, his debridement skills at that time were probably worse than Liang Xiaolin’s were now.

Being a mentor is truly exhausting, he thought. Especially mentoring two girls like these, it would probably be even more tiring.
