CHAPTER 40: CHAPTER 40 THE INVISIBLE MONSTER
"Accept it? Of course, we accept!" Chu Feng, startled awake by James, quickly nodded.
"Great! I’ll go and notify the client right now." James, thrilled, immediately took out his cell phone and called the client.
A moment later, James hung up, his face beaming.
"Chu, we can head out now! Principal Frank is near the school."
"Okay, let’s go!" As he spoke, Chu Feng grabbed the clothes beside him and headed for the door.
「Half an hour later,」 James parked his yellow taxi outside an exquisite building in the suburbs.
"James, is this an American private high school? The grounds are really nice!" Chu Feng remarked, getting out of the car and looking around.
"Of course. And this is winter. In summer, the area in front of the school gate would be all green lawn."
As the two chatted, a black sedan pulled up beside them.
A short, portly, bald white man scrambled out, rushing towards Chu Feng like a spinning top. "Mr. Chu, I’ve finally managed to catch you now that you’re back in the United States!"
"And you are?" Chu Feng asked.
The man quickly introduced himself. "Mr. Chu, I’m Frank, the principal of this private school. I’m the one who invited you!"
Chu Feng extended his hand and shook Frank’s. "Hello, Principal Frank. Could you tell me about the situation at the school?"
Hearing this, Principal Frank’s expression became noticeably hesitant.
"Please rest assured, Principal Frank. We won’t tell anyone what happened at the school," Chu Feng assured him.
This seemed to ease the principal’s concerns. "To tell you the truth, by the time the school was closed, a total of eighteen teachers and students had gone missing. So far, only thirteen sets of remains have been found."
Hearing the principal’s grave account, Chu Feng’s brow furrowed.
So many people actually died! It seems the thing in this school has quite an appetite.
"Alright, I generally understand the situation. Find someone to go inside with me."
"What? Go inside with you?" Principal Frank looked at Chu Feng, aghast.
"Of course. Or do you want me to smash down the main gate and go in myself?" Chu Feng said, glancing at the short, portly principal.
"’The gate? Then there’s no need for anyone else to accompany you! Here, take this.’ Principal Frank hurriedly tossed a set of keys to Chu Feng. ’It’ll open the main gate. None of the doors inside the school are locked!’" With that, he scrambled back into his car and sped off, leaving a trail of exhaust.
"Heh! That scared?" Chu Feng chuckled, looking at the keys in his hand and shaking his head.
"James, wait here for me."
With that, Chu Feng took the keys and walked toward the school.
As he drew closer to the school’s main building, his sensitive nose suddenly picked up a putrid stench.
This smell! Could it be a Ghoul? A thought surfaced in his mind.
Chu Feng flipped his palm, and the Four Symbols Spirit Trapping Formation instantly appeared in it. With a light toss, a massive barrier enveloped the entire school.
After unlocking the school’s main gate, Chu Feng took out his AA-12 shotgun and walked inside.
Is it a Dark Creature? Or is it outside the detection range? Chu Feng frowned, looking at the Spirit-Seeking Compass on his wrist; it showed no activity.
Unable to rely on the Spirit-Seeking Compass, Chu Feng clutched his shotgun and proceeded cautiously.
Walking through the silent school building, Chu Feng heard no sound of any other living thing. Only an increasingly intense, putrid odor enveloped him, clinging to the air. After searching several floors, he still hadn’t found anything unusual.
Could the man-eating thing have already left?
Standing by a window on the second floor of the school building, Chu Feng pondered for a moment, then suddenly shouted, "Is anyone there~~~"
He shouted for a while, but the deathly silent school building remained still; there was no response.
Could it be that since the students are on break, it decided to take a break too?
Shaking his head, Chu Feng gave up the search, walked downstairs, and headed towards the main gate.
"Help~"
Just as Chu Feng reached the main gate, a woman’s cry for help suddenly echoed from within the school building.
Hearing the sound, Chu Feng instantly turned to look behind him. As if afraid he wouldn’t know her location, the piercing cries for help continued unabated.
Could there still be someone alive?
Chu Feng furrowed his brow but still gripped his gun and moved in the direction of the sound.
「A few minutes later,」 Chu Feng stood before the door of a locker room.
Listening to the cries for help coming from inside and the now almost palpable putrid stench beside him, Chu Feng’s frown deepened.
Can ghouls also disguise their voices?
With a loud BANG, the closed door in front of him was kicked open, flying into the locker room. As expected, Chu Feng saw no one at the entrance.
The moment the door flew open, the incessant cries for help ceased abruptly, vanishing without a trace as if they had been an illusion. He scanned the empty locker room again but still found nothing.
Just as Chu Feng was wondering why the hidden entity had lured him to this place, a sudden sharp pain shot through his forehead, and his Spiritual Perception began to warn him frantically.
His heart clenched. Chu Feng barely had time to cover his body with the Golden Light Spell before a powerful force struck him, sending him flying into the wall behind.
"Cough, cough." What the hell is that thing?
Pushing himself up against the wall, Chu Feng scanned his surroundings but still couldn’t see what had attacked him. Just as he cautiously took a step, intending to leave, four showers of sparks suddenly erupted on his chest, and his body was once again sent flying backward.
Damn, what huge claws! From the marks on the Golden Light Spell, Chu Feng instantly recognized that something with massive, sharp claws had attacked him.
Invisible! And it has sharp claws! What the heck is this thing?
Realizing he couldn’t just wait to be killed, Chu Feng instantly produced a bag of snow-white flour. He grabbed a handful and threw it into the corridor ahead.
As the white flour gradually settled, a strange, flour-coated silhouette slowly appeared before Chu Feng’s eyes.
"Found you!"
Seeing it raise its claws, as if preparing to attack again, Chu Feng quickly aimed his shotgun and fiercely pulled the trigger.
BANG!
After the loud gunshot, the charging monster seemed unharmed. The force of the shotgun blast merely halted its advance in mid-air.
Then, perhaps realizing its invisibility had been compromised, the creature stopped concealing itself and revealed its true form before Chu Feng.
