Chapter 223: Noel vs Varian
CHAPTER 223: CHAPTER 223: NOEL VS VARIAN
The arena pulsed with tension.
Noel stood on one end of the platform, Revenant Fang in hand. The black blade absorbed the arena lights rather than reflecting them, almost as if it drank in the pressure of the crowd.
Across from him, Varian Kraxus spun two curved daggers between his fingers. His stance was relaxed, confident—his dark uniform hugging tightly to his frame, reinforced at key points. His eyes glinted with sharp amusement, and his demonkin horns cast jagged shadows beneath the arena lights.
The barrier dome above shimmered faintly.
A distant voice rang from the stands:
"LET’S GO NOEL!"
Charlotte’s voice, clear and defiant. Noel glanced up just long enough to see her in the crowd—Sancta Veil glowing, red hair vivid under the magical lights. Elyra and Elena stood at her sides, both focused on him.
Noel exhaled through his nose, steadying his grip.
Varian blurred forward, one dagger aimed for Noel’s neck, the other for his waist. His speed was impressive—faster than most humans, faster than expected.
Noel sidestepped, dragging Revenant Fang in a low arc.
"Fire Arc."
A searing crescent of flame lashed out, forcing Varian to twist mid-air and disengage, landing lightly a few meters back. A smirk played on his lips.
"Not bad."
Noel didn’t answer. He advanced instead, blade raised.
Varian raised both daggers, and his mana flared—gray and metallic. The blades in his hands lengthened slightly, taking on a sheen of enchanted steel.
With a sharp gesture, he slammed one foot down.
"Steel Burst."
Dozens of needle-thin shards of metal erupted from the ground toward Noel.
"Frost Wall."
Noel raised a glimmering wall of ice just in time. The needles clattered against it, some melting instantly from the heat residue of Fire Arc.
He dashed to the side and flicked his hand.
"Voltage Needle."
A streak of lightning zipped forward—Varian dodged, but the bolt scraped his shoulder. His expression faltered for half a second, then narrowed into a grin.
"You’re fast and clean. I like it."
Noel didn’t reply. His stance shifted, preparing for the next exchange.
Noel surged forward, gripping Revenant Fang tightly.
"Ignition Surge."
Flames wrapped around the black blade in a spiraling blaze, heating the air as it crackled to life. The ground beneath his boots hissed from the sudden spike in temperature.
Varian didn’t back down. He met Noel head-on, daggers crossing to parry the flaming sword.
Sparks exploded on contact. Noel’s blade, now burning hot, slammed against Varian’s defenses in a rapid flurry—each strike heavier, faster, and sharper than the last.
Varian grunted, sliding back as one of the impacts pushed him off balance. "You hit harder than I thought."
"Good."
Noel pressed in again, but Varian suddenly slammed both hands down.
"Stone Grasp."
From the arena floor, two arms of earth erupted, aiming to bind Noel’s legs.
Noel leapt back, narrowly avoiding the trap—but the delay gave Varian an opening. The demon closed the distance, his daggers dancing in a deadly arc.
Noel twisted, blocking one and letting the other graze his side. Blood spattered across the arena floor.
"Tch."
He spun, sweeping with a wide arc of Revenant Fang, forcing Varian to retreat.
The crowd roared at the clash—some for Noel, others for Varian—but the loudest voice came from above.
"YOU GOT THIS, NOEL!"
Charlotte again. Loud. Clear. Impossible to ignore.
Noel exhaled sharply, steadying himself.
Flames licked up his sword again.
Varian didn’t give Noel time to breathe.
"Iron Bloom."
The ground cracked beneath his feet as metallic spikes erupted in a wave toward Noel—dozens of jagged spears of steel shot out from below, aiming to impale or pin him.
Noel raised his hand without hesitation.
"Frost Wall."
A thick barrier of ice burst forth, absorbing most of the spikes. The impact shattered it into glittering shards, but the attack was halted.
"Not bad," Varian muttered, already circling again, blades flashing. "Let’s see how you handle this—"
Noel wasn’t listening.
His eyes narrowed, and lightning sparked across his free hand.
"Voltage Needle."
He fired the spell in an instant—so fast it didn’t even look like an attack.
A thin streak of light zipped through the air, nearly invisible.
Varian barely reacted in time. One of his daggers moved to deflect—
But it didn’t deflect.
The needle pierced his shoulder cleanly.
"Gh—!"
Varian stumbled, his left arm twitching from the electricity now dancing across it. His dagger slipped from his grasp and hit the ground with a metallic clatter.
Noel didn’t waste the opening.
He darted forward.
Varian raised his remaining dagger—but Noel was already inside his guard.
"Chain Flash."
A crackling bolt of lightning exploded from his palm, hitting Varian straight in the chest—then split into three smaller arcs, lashing outward and crashing into the floor behind him.
The force of the hit sent Varian flying backward, smoke rising from his chest.
Silence washed over the crowd for a heartbeat—
Then cheering erupted again.
But the fight wasn’t over.
Varian, bruised and panting, slowly rose to one knee, growling.
"You’re tougher than you look."
Noel didn’t smile.
"I get that a lot."
Varian dashed in with his dagger raised, eyes sharp despite the bruises. He was fast—relentless—but Noel had already seen enough.
He took a breath.
The air around him shifted.
Just one word:
"Stormpiercer."
A sharp crack split the arena.
A bolt of lightning shot from Noel’s hand, straight through Revenant Fang. The blade became a conduit—pure electric force condensed into a line of piercing light.
In the blink of an eye, it fired forward.
Varian barely had time to react.
The lightning tore through the space between them, slicing through his guard and striking him center mass. His protective artifact triggered instantly, flaring red and absorbing the brunt of the force—but it flung him back violently all the same.
He crashed into the ground, smoke rising from his uniform. His eyes rolled back, and the magic barrier around him flickered... then vanished.
Silence.
Then the announcer’s voice boomed:
"VICTORY! Noel Thorne advances to the second round!"
The crowd erupted.
And cutting over all the noise—
"THAT’S MY BOYFRIEND!!"
Charlotte’s voice rang out from the stands, carried by her Sancta Veil.
"DID YOU SEE THAT?! HE JUST—ZAP!—STRAIGHT THROUGH HIM!"
"ELENA, DID YOU SEE THAT?!"
Elena hid half her face with her hands.
Elyra exhaled, calm but visibly annoyed. "...Of course she had to shout that."
Noel stood in the middle of the arena, Revenant Fang still faintly crackling with residual energy.
"...She’s gonna keep yelling every time, isn’t she?"
He turned and walked off, the crowd cheering behind him—and Charlotte still screaming his praises.
