CHAPTER 429: ALICE, YOUR BIRTHDAY’S COMING UP
It’s already been six months since Alice began her lone worldwide subjugation.
The rain came, autumn came and now it was winter. The time of the year when it was freezing cold and the color white was all over the place because of the snow.
Alice had taken care of all the issues in the world and while the world was currently safe, she decided to catch up on her own life with the people who were waiting for her.
"Brr, it’s freezing." Alice exclaimed as she walked around in her fur coat, created from her jacket that could be customized according to her thoughts.
"You’re lying." Leo said. "You can’t feel the cold."
"Says you. It’s my body. I decide if I feel the cold or not." Alice said but it was true. Thanks to her reformed body, she wasn’t feeling any cold, as if her body had become immune to cold entirely.
Still, she reacted as if she could feel the cold. It was fun that way.
There was one person she knew who wouldn’t be affected by the cold as well. The ice queen, haha.
"I wonder how she’s doing." Alice thought and then turned to Leo. "Anyway, let’s get home first. I miss Mark’s cooking." She smiled and Leo rolled his eyes away.
The foodie in her had been awakened.
"Let’s just stop by a restaurant first." Leo suggested. "You didn’t let them know you were coming so there won’t be any food. Are you okay waiting for him to go get groceries before cooking?"
Alice thought of it and then laughed.
"Nah, I can’t wait. Let’s go eat now."
They went to a restaurant and had a table full of dishes while Leo watched her. Somethings... Never change.
"Alice, your birthday’s coming up." Leo suddenly said and she paused. She gulped down the food in her mouth and asked,
"Oh yeah?" She continued eating like it didn’t bother her but Leo could see that a part of her was still bothered because of the memory.
That tragedy didn’t happen on this birthday, but the birthday is coming up next year. And it would definitely not happen since they had gotten rid of Big Stach, but it seemed like the memory was still etched in her mind and it bothered her.
Would she use this as an excuse not to celebrate her birthday?
She had never celebrated it in this life so he was sure she would want to spend it with the people she cared about.
But... they were actually having ice cream on a cold day like that. How bold?
"We interrupt with breaking news!" The TV in the restaurant flashed a reporter and the scene behind her, which was a gate break. "A red gate spawned out of nowhere in eastern Carolina, and from it are monsters that are...ahhh," she exclaimed as one of the monsters threw a rock, and then the camera began to shake. "Focus the camera on the gate," the reporter said to the cameraman.
The camera was a bit shaky but they were able to see what was emerging from the gate.
While most awakeneds were at the spot trying to stop the disaster, it looked like they couldn’t do anything because the monsters were made of rocks.
They were golems.
This was the first time golems were appearing from any gate so the method to defeat them was unknown.
They would at least try to stop the golems from advancing, but they were not the issue. The golems could throw rocks and destroy everything around them without moving an inch.
"I guess it’s starting to get even more dangerous." Leo exclaimed and looked at Alice who was handing away at her food, as fast as she could.
Abandoning her meal was not an option.
The golems were built sturdy with red orbs on their heads, serving as their eyes.
But those orbs weren’t just there serving as their eyes.
The red ball on one of the golems glowed and then a laser beam shot out of it, piercing through numerous buildings.
"The entire East Carolina will be destroyed at this rate with no way to fight back." The reporter continued, holding her head as if trying to make sure her head wasn’t slowly falling off.
"Where is Alice the hero during times like this?" Someone in the restaurant asked with a voice filled with scrutiny and Alice paused. "It’s times like these that she should be active, not going around showing off in places no one asked her to be."
Alice raised her head and turned around to see who was talking. It was a scrawny dude who looked like he had been born into this world as a failure.
He was simply jealous and wanted to badmouth the girl who had been going around and doing some good, while he played video games in his mom’s basement all day.
"Hey, watch your mouth." Someone yelled at him. "Going around and showing off? She saved people in those places and brought them back to life, lands that were abandoned. You have no right to say such a thing when you can’t even kill a goblin."
"Yeah, don’t talk badly about Alice."
"She’s a young girl but she’s doing so much for the world. She deserves a break too."
"She’s only human, after all. She should rest while the guys who’ve been feeding on glory and reward take over. Who are you to judge her?"
The entire restaurant attacked this man with their comeback and Alice felt her heart filled with satisfaction. It feels so good when the majority is on your side.
The man saw that he couldn’t win this and clicked his tongue.
"You’re all a bunch of morons." He said, getting up and planning to leave when someone grabbed his shoulder.
"Hey!" He looked back and saw it was a waiter. "You better pay up before you leave. Don’t think you can weasel your way out of paying by acting so rude to our Savior?"
The man felt utterly humiliated and paid up before heading out.
"Dammit!" He kicked the rocks as he made his way over the alley. "They don’t know anything. A person can only be that powerful through underhanded means. There’s no way she got that much power from simply leveling up. If I had that kind of power..."
"If you had that kind of power, what would you do?" Someone asked, standing in front of him and he raised his head, frowning.
"Huh? Who the heck are you?"
"Someone who will give you power." They said, their eyes glowing red. "You want it, right? Let me offer it to you and you’ll do one little thing for me. Do we have a deal?"
