CHAPTER 65: THE ONLY WAY

Seeing Damien deal with all of the Midnighters of the crimson moon with a single slash of his sword.

Edwin tumbled in the hall, a horrified expression on his face. The thought of Damien being able to survive today’s slaughter didn’t even cross his mind. After all, there were more than ten Midnighters, beings who he considered as the blessed of gods themselves and now, in front of his very eyes, Damien reaped all of their lives. A single swing is all it took for Damien to send them all to their deaths.

He looked at Damien, his body trembling as the fear of death gripped his very soul. The world felt cold, unfair and unjust. He did everything to gain the power he so wanted; he even made a deal with the demon himself, but alas, no scheme could stand before absolute strength.

Hre stood up, his legs shaking as he staggered towards Damien. He stopped a few steps away from Damien as he fell to his knees and started to beg for his life.

"F-forgive me, Damien. I-I’ll never do anything like this again. Please... grant me mercy!" Edwin pleaded, his tone filled with guilt and fear as tears welled up in his eyes.

Damien looked at him with his indifferent eyes.

"Do you not remember what I had said before?" Damien questioned as he approached Edwin, who was bowing before him, his head touching the cold hall.

Edwin’s thoughts ran wild as he tried to remember the words of Damien.

’I could have let you go for your transgression, if only...’

’If only you hadn’t dared to look at Anieal with those filthy intentions of yours.’

’Ah...’

Edwin’s gaze dulled as he lifted his head; his eyes met Damien’s indifferent stare.

"...Haha... haha..." Edwin stared into Damien’s eyes as tears fell from his eyes; the guilt and fury all came down as he started to laugh like a broken toy.

Damien looked at him for a few moments, after which he turned and picked up a bottle of wine placed at the table and started to move towards the window while sipping the wine from the bottle.

Edwin tilted his head in confusion when he saw that. His eyes started to brighten as hope rekindled in them.

’Did he forgive me? Am I going to live, after all?’

But Damien’s next words not only took away his hope, but they ripped his very soul apart.

"Make it quick, Natasha."

Edwin’s eyes widened in shock and dread.

"N-No... i-it can’t be..." Edwin mumbled to himself as he tried to escape from this dreadful reality. "S-she would never betray me, Natasha would n- ughk?!" his words, however, were cut short when a dagger slid clean through his throat.

Edwin turned around with the hope that maybe his killer was not her, but when he saw the person who gripped the dagger, a woman with silky black hair, fading into blue at the end. Tears shimmered in her guiltful dark blue eyes as she called out to him... She looked lost and broken.

Edwin found the pain of betrayal much more unbearable than the wound in his throat. He looked at Natasha with hate and fury... he felt his world shatter.

"I am sorry... Edwin." Natasha spoke as she looked into his eyes, "That was... the only way."

Edwin, who was about to breathe his last, slowly turned his head towards Damien. His figure, illuminated by the moonlight, looked like a celestial being who had graced them with his presence.

A single tear slid down his left eye as he choked on his own blood. He breathed his last as a single thought took his mind.

’Ah... Thank you...’

His body fell like a doll without the threads.

Damien turned and looked at Natasha, who held the body of Edwin as tears slid down her cheeks.

Damien stepped forward as he spoke.

"It will be better if you don’t try something like him," Damien warned. His voice, however, was gentle.

Natasha nodded as his words as she placed her hand on Edwin’s face and closed his lifeless eyes with her soft palms.

Natasha moved her hand towards the dagger. Her fingers trembled as she withdrew the dagger. She hadn’t stopped crying, not even once. Not even when she knew this was the only way.

Damien stared at her for a few moments before walking away.

Damien walked out of the Gilded Ecstasy and stood there for a few moments as he recalled everything that had transpired her.

He shook his head and looked at his hand, which he used to wield the sword. It was trembling.

"Heh. I am still not as strong as you... No matter how many times I try," Damien mumbled as he walked towards his car and stepped inside.

He pressed the accelerator, ready to leave. The car moved, but moments later, it suddenly stopped. Damien raised an eyebrow at that as he got ready to step out of the car. Right then, a sudden beep was heard and

*Boom*

The car exploded, leaving behind nothing but a smoking crater.

Moments later, the space beside the crater rippled as a blade covered in purple flames started to cut through it. Damien walked out of there as his body trembled and he fell on his knees. Blood started to drip out of his lips.

"Hah... Hah..." Damien breathed heavily as he looked at the crater with a trembling eye.

"A bomb modified with star essence?" Damien mumbled after all such explosions shouldn’t be able to hurt him, but he knew that this bomb was different... It could’ve left him crippled for at least a month.

His expressions darkened.

"Demon Lord..." Damien growled, his tone laced with immense fury and hatred.

Damien pulled out his phone and made a call.

"Send a car." He ordered.

"Hah..." A heavy sigh escaped his lips as he tried to calm himself.

"....I hope Anna is fine," he whispered, his tone heavy with exhaustion.
