CHAPTER 69: SCREAM

"ARGHH!!" A blood-curdling scream cut through the hall. One and White turned and looked at Anna.

Anna gasped for air as she felt a metallic taste in her throat. She turned her head to the left, and she saw Elise looking at her with glowing red eyes, no expression on her face. She had stabbed Anna with her own dagger. Anna’s lips and eyes trembled.

"Guhk!!" Blood started to seep out of Anna’s lips as Elise twisted the dagger.

"MISS ANIEAL!" White screamed and hurriedly moved towards her. He grabbed Anna by her waist and threw Elise away.

Anna lifted her hand towards Elise, who was sent flying into a wall as her vision started to blur.

"E-Elise..." she called out to Elise before her vision turned dark.

Anna lay in the bed as she was being treated by the doctors of Starborne Family. The doctors moved skillfully. After treating all of her wounds, they left the room.

Damien sat in a chair as he looked at Anna with a worried expression on his face. White stood beside him with a lowered head.

"It wasn’t your fault, White." Damien turned his head towards White and continued. "You did what your duty tells you to. That is to keep Anna safe, no matter what."

Damien turned back and looked at Anna.

Damien stood up and walked towards Anna. He lifted his hand and moved the hairs covering her face. He whispered.

"I hope she takes it well..."

Damien looked at her face for a few moments before turning back and leaving the room.

White stood at the same place, head still lowered as he waited for Anna to wake up.

Moments passed in a blink, Anna’s eyelids started to tremble as she slowly opened her eyes. She frowned upon seeing the unfamiliar ceiling; the memories of the events which had taken place a few hours ago flashed back in her head. She started to gasp for air.

White lifted his head and walked towards Anna as he called out in a worried tone.

"Miss Anieal."

Anna turned her head as she called out in a low voice.

"White..."

She paused as she breathed heavily a few times and questioned.

"How is everyone?"

White looked at her for a moment, after which he turned around and grabbed a water bottle and filled a glass with water.

Anna, puzzled by his actions, questioned again.

"White?"

White turned to her with a smile as he ignored the question and spoke.

"You should have a glass of water first."

Anna looked at him with a frown, but she still gave him a nod.

"Alright."

White walked towards her and helped her sit up before passing the glass of water to her.

Anna took the glass and slowly sipped from it as she cleared her thoughts. She finished the water and passed the empty glass to White.

White took the empty glass and placed it beside the bottle.

"Now tell me, how is everyone?" Anna looked into his eyes as she questioned.

White nodded as he began to speak.

"Everyone’s fine, the attack was too large. So, the young master had to contact the Star Council." White revealed as he stared back into Anna’s eyes.

Anna blinked a few times. She tilted her head as she asked.

"The Star Council? Why would brother contact them?" Anna questioned.

’Brother would never contact The Star Council... After all, he believes that someone from there had plotted against Father.’ Anna reasoned to herself.

White nodded at her words; he was also puzzled when he found out about it.

"The attack tonight was too large for the young master to ignore; he requested the support of The Star Council to increase the security against Midnighters within Necron City," White answered her questions as best as he could.

"I see..." Anna mumbled to herself in a low voice.

’When you look at it this way... It makes sense that the Star Council would try to stop these attacks. After all, if the existence of Midnighters becomes public, things would turn worse for the Midnighters.’

’Some modern world powers might even try to remove them for good. After all, Midnighters are weaker at night.’

Moments passed, and Anna continued with her thoughts until she suddenly remembered why she was lying in the medical ward of Starborne Emporium.

She looked up and looked at White.

"White," Anna called out to him.

White was standing beside the door of the room. He stepped towards her and spoke.

"Yes, Miss Anieal."

"How’s Elise?" Anna asked. After hearing that, White stopped in his steps as his face turned grim.

Seeing his expression, Anna’s heart sank as she asked again.

"H-How’s Elise, White?" Her voice started to shake, but she still managed to speak.

White didn’t reply and lowered his head.

Anna’s face turned pale, and her heart started to beat loudly against her chest.

"I-It can’t be..." Anna said as she slowly stood up from her bed and walked towards White with shaky steps.

White didn’t react and just stood there, waiting.

"White, look at me..." Anna ordered with a voice so grim that it made White’s heart sink.

White lifted his head and looked at Anna, who had tears at the edge of her eyes as she walked towards him. He clenched his fists when he saw that, but he knew that he couldn’t do anything about those tears.

Anna’s steps tumbled, causing her to lose balance. White moved and caught her by the waist.

Anna looked into his eyes as she questioned again. Her voice still had hope, or was it just denial?

"She can’t be d-dead, right?"

White held her gaze for a few moments before shaking his head.

"No..." he replied in a low and gentle voice.

Colour returned to Anna’s face, and hope rekindled in her eyes.

Anna smiled and questioned.

"So, she is fine, right?"

White bit his lower lip before shaking his head, once again.

Anna, puzzled by it, softly grabbed his face and forced him to look into her eyes.

"Tell me, White, how is Elise?" she questioned with a serious tone, allowing no disobedience.

White looked into her eyes as he apologised with a guilty look on his face.

"I am sorry..."

"Answer me, White," she questioned again, her voice a little louder than before.

"It will be better if you see her yourself..." White answered as he lowered his head.
