The Fish I Catch Can Level Up
Chapter 214: Eating Snake Mackerel Gives You the Runs?
After Chu Mingcheng landed a tiger shark, the others also set their sights on sharks.
Near-threatened or not, nobody really cared, as long as they could be caught and sold.
In just a couple hours, two more tiger sharks were pulled up, both slightly larger than Chu Mingcheng's catch.
The good news was that landing three sharks in a row scared off all the bait-stealing sharks in the waters below, allowing the anglers to fish for greater amberjack normally—a welcome development.
After catching that one tiger shark, Chu Mingcheng didn't continue targeting them.
It was mainly too exhausting, and greater amberjack were easier to sell.
The Sky High remained in the area for another two days. Only when the anglers started complaining did the boat finally move to the next fishing spot.
This made Chu Mingcheng look forward to the next location with anticipation. After all, staying in one place for four consecutive days could get old, even with daily catches. This was the reason for growing dissatisfaction among the anglers.
This time, the journey took a full day. Not long after dinner, the Sky High once again came to a stop.
After eating, Chu Mingcheng went to the bridge. The captain was at the helm today, and since they were old acquaintances, he went over to chat.
The captain had stopped the boat based on the fish finder's readings. Current depth was 237 meters, and fish activity between 200 meters and the bottom was excellent, showing thick red lines indicating large schools.
"Captain, there are lots of fish here. What kinds are there?"
"This area has plenty of long-tail and big-mouth red snappers, and a good number of big-eye scad too. Many anglers come to the Nansha Islands specifically for these three species. Besides those, there are also dogtooth tuna and some deep-sea groupers. It's a pretty high-quality spot."
Long-tail and big-mouth "birds" were nicknames for long-tail and big-mouth red snappers. The giant snapper Chu Mingcheng had caught in the Xisha Islands was a big-mouth red snapper.
Hearing there were many long-tail red snappers, he couldn't sit still any longer. He immediately said goodbye to the captain and ran down to tell everyone to start fishing.
He made a beeline for the stern, claiming several of the better fishing spots.
The fish finder showed higher fish concentration at the stern, so of course, he wasn't going to give up those prime locations.
The waves were a bit rough tonight, even splashing onto the deck.
After setting up his rod in the holder, Chu Mingcheng ran back to his room to grab a raincoat.
"Luoluo, put this on. The wind and waves are strong tonight, and you'll get cold if your clothes get wet."
Jiang Luoluo stood obediently while he helped her put on the raincoat, her big eyes fixed on the thoughtful man before her. "What about you?"
"I'm fine. A little spray like this is nothing."
"No, wait for me!" After putting on her raincoat, Jiang Luoluo went and got a large-sized one for Chu Mingcheng.
Nearby, Zhang Wei and Chen Yang looked like they'd just eaten something foul. They'd just had dinner, and now they were being force-fed another round of public displays of affection.
Han Baola, however, clutched her chest and sighed with envy again. "I really wish I had a boyfriend as thoughtful as Mingcheng oppa."
The next moment, she saw a shadow fall over her. Someone had draped a raincoat over her shoulders.
"I'm the man you're looking for!" Zhang Wei appeared beside her, a look of deep affection on his face.
Han Baola stared blankly at his thick stubble, sparse nose hairs, greasy face, and messy hair. She suddenly turned and leaned over the railing. "Blegh!"
"Hey, hey, hey, it's not that bad, is it?" Seeing her dramatic reaction, Zhang Wei felt deeply insulted.
Of course, Han Baola was just pretending. She turned back with an exasperated look. "Zhang Wei oppa, can't you tidy yourself up a bit? At least don't be so sloppy. Where I come from, that's very impolite."
"You don't actually think girls like guys who are this messy, do you? Even if you're not handsome, you should at least be clean and presentable."
"I was just so absorbed in fishing, I didn't notice! Besides, I think I'm pretty handsome, right?"
Zhang Wei was embarrassed. The last few days of fishing had left him drained, and he hadn't had the energy to clean himself up. He was indeed quite a mess.
Not to mention, compared to Han Baola, their cultural customs were different. Every time she went out, she was wearing makeup.
Even Jiang Luoluo didn't go that far—sometimes, when she found it too troublesome, she wouldn't wear any makeup at all.
But she was naturally beautiful, so she looked just as good without it.
Han Baola sighed and ignored him, turning her attention back to fishing.
The bite hadn't started yet, but a large school of squid appeared on the surface.
"Let's catch some squid first. We can use them to catch bigger fish later," Chu Mingcheng said. He immediately had a crew member bring over a few rods specifically for catching small squid, rigged with luminous squid jigs.
Squid jigs were a type of lure that worked exceptionally well for catching squid.
In no time, Chu Mingcheng had half a bucket full. He was about to continue when his electric jigging rod started moving.
Since the bite was on, he stopped catching squid and got ready.
He pressed the button, letting the electric reel automatically retrieve the line.
He went to grab two large, long foam boxes and placed them behind his and Jiang Luoluo's fishing spots. A crew member immediately brought over a large amount of ice and poured seawater into the boxes.
By the time all this was done, Chu Mingcheng had landed a long-tail red snapper.
It was a decent size, about seven or eight jin, and was still flopping around vigorously after being brought on deck.
Chu Mingcheng removed the hook and tossed the fish into the ice water.
Once the fish was properly chilled, it would be taken out, put in a plastic bag, and given to a crew member to be vacuum-sealed and then flash-frozen.
All of Chu Mingcheng's fish had been vacuum-sealed and then frozen. Otherwise, on a month-long trip to the Nansha Islands, it would be difficult to guarantee freshness.
All the anglers' catches were processed this way, and the captain made a hefty sum just from the packing materials alone.
However, some anglers, trying to save money, didn't tip the crew for this service and had to do it all themselves.
Chu Mingcheng felt this was counterproductive. The tip was only a few hundred yuan per person. Spending all that time packing, they might as well be fishing!
With his Fish Gathering ability and his choice of a better fishing spot, as soon as the bite started for Chu Mingcheng, he was getting hits one after another.
Zhang Wei and the others next to him weren't doing too badly either, landing a fish almost every five or six minutes.
Just as the captain had said, the catch was mainly long-tail and big-mouth red snappers, with big-eye scad coming in second.
However, none of the fish were particularly large, mostly ranging between five and ten jin.
This was also related to the hook and bait. Since they'd just started, Chu Mingcheng hadn't intended to go for monsters right off the bat.
After two hours of fishing, his foam box was full and was taken away by a crew member to be packed, who then brought him a new one.
Chu Mingcheng began to change his leader and hook, baiting it with a squid to go after bigger fish.
A full foam box meant at least two hundred jin of fish. To catch that much in two hours showed just how good the fishing was tonight.
Long-tail red snappers made up more than half the catch. At over two hundred yuan per jin, this fish was easy to sell, and Chu Mingcheng didn't need to sell it to the captain or a fishmonger.
His own customers could take it all. By his calculations, he'd made about forty thousand yuan in two hours—the price of one spot on the trip.
"Ah Cheng, look!" Jiang Luoluo suddenly pointed at the sea surface and shouted.
"What's wrong?" Chu Mingcheng, who'd been squatting, immediately stood up and looked out at the sea.
A pod of dolphins had been attracted by the squid and were occasionally leaping out of the water.
"Huh, are those Chinese white dolphins? They're pink, quite pretty," Chu Mingcheng said, adjusting the camera on his head to film the dolphins.
"Yeah, pink dolphins! They look so magical!" Not to be outdone, Jiang Luoluo stopped fishing, picked up the camera hanging on her chest, and started filming as well.
But after just a short while, the sky opened up, and it began to pour.
The squid on the surface scattered because of the heavy rain, and the dolphins naturally left the area.
Chu Mingcheng was very thankful he'd put the raincoat on Jiang Luoluo, and that she'd put one on him.
Looking at the two drowned rats next to him, the corner of his mouth curled into a silent, mocking grin.
Zhang Wei: "..."
Chen Yang: "..."
"Zhang Wei oppa, you should go back and change your clothes!" Han Baola insisted, pulling Zhang Wei toward his room.
She'd been saved from the downpour by him. The moment the rain started, she'd dragged him away and given him the raincoat from her room.
Only Chen Yang was left, silently raising his head to the sky and offering it a friendly middle finger.
A short while later, Chu Mingcheng's rod in front of him suddenly dipped hard. The squid had hooked something big.
But the electric reel was retrieving the line a bit too quickly, making him think this fish might be a disappointment.
However, when the fish was brought to the surface, Chu Mingcheng was somewhat stunned. It was a nearly two-meter-long black snake mackerel.
He lifted the fish onto the deck. It twisted its long body, mouth wide open, revealing sharp teeth. It looked fierce.
"Ah Cheng, what kind of fish is this?"
"This is the fish that makes your butt leak oil. It's called an oilfish," Chu Mingcheng said with a mysterious smile, making a little joke.
"Huh? Is this that fish they sell on the market as cod, the one that makes your butt leak oil if you eat it? I remember it was called some kind of snake mackerel."
It seemed Jiang Luoluo took Chu Mingcheng's words seriously. She'd even heard of the "oilfish," though she clearly didn't know much about it.
"This is the oilfish?" Zhang Wei, however, looked confused. The oilfish hadn't been mentioned in their spearfishing identification lessons.
Chu Mingcheng only knew about these fish from reading encyclopedias in his spare time.
"Yep, this is it. What, want to try some?"
Zhang Wei's eyes darted around as a great idea for a prank came to mind. "In that case, how about we have a competition tonight to see who catches the heaviest fish? The loser has to eat this oilfish. What do you say?"
Chu Mingcheng was surprised. "You're that confident? You dare compete with me in catching big fish?"
Zhang Wei put on a disdainful expression. "Catching big fish is all about luck. It's not like you catch a huge one every time. The day before yesterday, the grouper I caught was bigger than any fish you've caught. What, scared to lose?"
"Fine by me. The worst that can happen is I'll have to wear a diaper. Nothing to be afraid of. But let's see if we can find a smaller one later. It would be a waste to eat this nearly two-meter-long one."
Chu Mingcheng agreed in a heartbeat. When it came to catching big fish, he wasn't afraid of anyone.
But this blackfin snake mackerel couldn't be wasted. It was quite delicious, could sell for a good price, and most importantly, it wasn't an oilfish at all.
