The Headline Queen: President Hawthorne is Her Die-Hard Fan!
Chapter 55: What’s Going On
CHAPTER 55: CHAPTER 55: WHAT’S GOING ON
"No, no, no, that’s not what I mean..."
Skylar Hughes saw her mother at a loss for words, she said, "Aunt Wright, don’t be angry. Paige has been like this since she was a child, my mom truly can’t control her. She’s being polite to you compared to how she usually treats us..."
Implying that she usually treats them and Yvette Hughes even worse.
Nanny Sutton was originally busy in the kitchen. She heard the quarrel and quickly came out, seeing Paige Sterling being outnumbered, she immediately stepped forward.
"Miss Skylar, how can you talk like that? If our young miss was like that, would Sterling Family still have a place for you? How can you speak nonsense in front of outsiders?"
Skylar Hughes’s face turned a bit unpleasant.
Calling her just Miss Skylar, while calling Paige Sterling ’our young miss’ - the difference in closeness was apparent.
She wished she could drive this old woman out!
Nanny Sutton, very protective of Paige Sterling, said, "Our young miss is clearly a polite person, and she isn’t an ignorant person. She’s starred in many films, won Best Actress at seventeen, has a talent for scientific research, and has never adopted bad habits of the rich second generation. She’s a perfectly good girl, Mrs. Wright, you’re speaking utter nonsense, is it because you yourself don’t have a daughter, that you casually slander others’ daughters?"
Being rendered speechless by Paige earlier, and now being criticized by a servant, Mrs. Wright was so angry she almost fainted.
"Yvette, is this how you manage the household? Even a servant can be more assertive than you right in front of you?"
Yvette Hughes also felt a bit embarrassed.
"Nanny Sutton, don’t speak!"
Nanny Sutton harbored resentment. She wished she didn’t have to speak, but take a look at Yvette: Paige was being belittled like this, and yet she maintains such a low stance in front of Mrs. Wright. If it were her biological daughter being slandered, could she remain so calm?
Paige glanced at Yvette Hughes, but ultimately didn’t publicly embarrass her.
After all, if she embarrassed Yvette Hughes, she would also be disgracing her father.
"Nanny Sutton, don’t bother arguing with her, go call security. I don’t want to see this person at Sterling Family again."
Nanny Sutton replied and called for two security guards to come in.
"Fine, fine, the Sterling Family is very good!" Without needing security to escort, Mrs. Wright left on her own.
Yvette Hughes felt apprehensive, "Offending Mrs. Wright, what now? Paige, do you not know how to tolerate?"
Paige Sterling looked cold, "My father never taught me how to swallow my pride."
Especially in her own home, why boost others’ morale and belittle her own influence?
Skylar Hughes sneered, "You’ve really stood up for yourself, but have you thought that the mess you create still has to be cleaned up by my mom lowering her head?"
"She’s the matriarch of the Sterling family, if she stands firm, no one would dare make her bow."
After speaking, she didn’t bother engaging further with this mother and daughter.
Perhaps Yvette Hughes wasn’t wrong, but her worldview differed too much from Paige’s, which destined them to never be a harmonious family, just able to maintain surface-level peace.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Julian Hawthorne was injected and sleeping.
When he woke up, it was already quite late.
He got out of bed and had just stepped out of his hospital room when Simon Hawthorne blocked his path.
"Brother, you’re injured, where are you going?"
Julian Hawthorne had a gloomy expression, "Get out of the way."
Simon Hawthorne tightly held him, "Brother, you can’t be discharged! The doctor said, even though you have no visible injuries, you need to stay for observation. What if your brain is injured?"
Julian Hawthorne continued to struggle, Simon gritted his teeth, "You just want to see Paige, right? Lie back down, I have a way to make Paige come see you!"
Julian momentarily paused and looked at Simon.
Simon asserted confidently, "I really have a way, give me your phone."
Julian unlocked his phone and handed it over to Simon.
The next moment he realized his younger brother was quite the dramatist, the emotions coming naturally.
Once the call connected, Simon began to cry.
The crying was so intense that it made Paige’s head hurt on the other end, wanting to hang up, when Simon finally said, "Sister-in-law, it’s Simon."
Paige responded with a hum, "What’s up?"
Simon cried again, Paige resisted the urge to hang up, "Why are you crying?"
Simon said, "I don’t want to cry either, but when I think of my brother, struck down so young, I just can’t hold back..."
Paige asked, "What happened to your brother?"
"He got into a car accident today, sob..."
Paige said, "So you’re calling me to attend the funeral?"
That was a sharp remark.
Even Simon was caught off guard by Paige’s indifferent tone.
After a pause, he finally reacted, "I just wanted to let you know, if you have time, come visit my brother..."
Simon couldn’t figure out whether Paige would come due to her indifferent tone.
But Paige said, "Give me the address, I’ll come over now."
Simon quickly reported the address.
After hanging up the phone, he looked at Julian.
"Brother, did you hear that? She said she’d come right over!"
Julian kicked him.
Simon asked, "Brother, what are you doing?"
Julian replied, "Thanks for crying for me."
Simon prepared to leave, but rolled back from the doorway.
"Brother, remember, if she arrives within five minutes, it means she loves you. If she arrives within ten minutes, it means she likes you. If she arrives within fifteen minutes, it means she cares about you."
Paige only took five minutes to get to the hospital.
Simon checked the time and his eyes lit up.
"Sister-in-law, how did you get here so quickly? You must be really worried."
Paige replied, "I’m at home, Sterling Family is close to here, walking slowly still takes only five minutes."
Walking slowly still takes only five minutes...
Simon figured his brother’s heart must be breaking in that hospital room; he was near death, but the person he loved just strolled over to see him for the last time.
"My brother’s inside, sister-in-law, go in and take a look."
Paige pushed open the door of the hospital room and walked in. She saw Julian, wrapped like a mummy, lying on the bed and hesitated for a moment.
"Are you... Julian?"
Wrapped up like this, Julian felt quite hopeless.
He wanted every moment he appeared before Paige to be glamorous.
But thinking about it, Simon was right; he needed to act pitiful when necessary.
So he nodded.
Paige asked, "Why did you wrap yourself up like this? Doesn’t it feel uncomfortable?"
Before Julian could respond, Paige continued, "I’ll untie you."
Then she unraveled the bandages wrapped around Julian.
He was perfectly fine, without a single injury.
Outside, Simon was frustrated and thought, with all the lines he taught you, you didn’t use a single one? He hadn’t said a word yet, but already let her unwrap the bandages. With that emotional intelligence, it’s a wonder he’d ever get a girlfriend!
Inside the hospital room, Paige sat down. "Tell me, what’s going on?"
