CHAPTER 50: LOVE FOR POWER

DARIUS

Hours passed and we successfully got into the Blood Moon Pack, however, it was almost becoming a tragedy. The boys were out of their wits, their bodies already failing.

And while I quickly got help to take them to the Pack’s hospital, the Alpha had heard of our arrival, alongside the healer. The news of the Blood Wolf had reached them after I sent my aide ahead of me.

"Are you really sure she is one?" They stared at Davina’s almost lifeless body behind a glass wall alongside the boys who were already peacefully asleep.

"I saw the marks, Alpha. I can’t be mistaken. But I brought them to the Pack to ascertain that."

We both turned to the healer who stood behind us, but still had his eyes on Davina, studying her intensely.

"Did you find out something?"

"Not yet." He shook his head. "I took a sample of her blood and I’m going to determine what is wrong with her."

"But for now, I will continue to administer treatments. Also, Darius is right."

I glanced at the Alpha, spotting every ounce of emotion on his face. The slight twitch of his cheeks and his brows, and the slight curve of his lips made my eyes narrow in suspicion.

"What are you thinking, Damian?"

"Nothing much..." He shrugged, as his hands folded behind him. "I just realized how the goddess works in mysterious ways."

"19 years ago, Ciara was taken away from me. And now, I have someone else to replace her. Isn’t that great?"

My brows creased, "Don’t tell me you still hold onto that?"

"Why wouldn’t I?" He snapped his head at me. "If I had married Ciara years ago, I would have been the one with the immense power Diego has now."

"Two Packs under his belt? Do you think he is capable of that without Ciara’s help?"

When the war broke out years ago, way before the boys were born, the blood wolf was at the top, raking through the war zones with no one able to stand in her way.

The Blood Moon Pack thought they were in for a victory only for Ciara to fall in love with Diego. He came as the sweetest man ever, the only person who seemed to understand that Ciara just needed someone who would see her beyond the power she possessed.

She trusted him, but I saw through his mask. I begged her not to marry that bastard, but she fell right into his trap.

I watched her win the war and hand over the remains to him. Not even Alpha Damian could stand against her decision else, he would end up dead.

And he carried that resentment all through the years.

"I bet he is still not satisfied with the amount of resources under his belt. He wants this one too?!"

I let out a strained sigh, "I don’t think that is what we should concern ourselves with, Alpha."

"Ciara’s kids came to us for help. To help their mate too. We should be thinking of how to uncover her ancestry and how she ended up in Diego’s territory, not this!"

"So what?" Damian sneered. "We can just ask her to reject them and we throw them out of the Pack while we keep her. After all, her roots are tied down here. All we need to do is a little digging."

However, I shook my head, "I don’t think—"

"This is our moment, Darius! Our moment to reclaim our lost pride!" He grabbed my shoulders, with his eyes boring into mine.

"Forget about whatever promise you made with Ciara. Her children are no longer your business and you have a duty to the Blood Moon Pack!"

I stood back, feeling his Alpha aura weighing on me. I had pledged my allegiance to him and he could will me to do anything.

But my willpower was fighting against it. I made a promise, not only to Ciara, but to the boys as well. I didn’t want to betray them just like their father had done.

And as the Alpha walked away with the healer, I went after him, blocking his way.

My gaze was hard, with no ounce of fear, "I won’t let you lay your hands on Davina! Never!"

"The boys also belong in this Pack and if you won’t let them stay, you have to bid the blood wolf goodbye too. Anywhere she goes, they go."

My breath shook for the first time while I pointed at myself, "I go too."

"Are you...Are you out of your mind?" Damian pointed at me with a shaky finger.

"Don’t let your greed blind you, Alpha."

He was shaking in anger by the time I left his sight, and I went straight into the room where they were kept. No matter what, I was determined to let them stay safe here.

I watched the Alpha leave, but then I knew it wouldn’t end there. He had coveted power for so long and even thought he would regain it when Ciara died, pitting our Pack against Diego and starting a war.

Just a few words wouldn’t stop him.

But even though I knew the danger ahead, the boys had nowhere to go and the Blood Moon Pack was their safest bet.

I held their hands one after the other, while checking on their open injuries.

"I will protect you all..." I muttered to myself but the trickle of sweat on my back gave me a bad premonition.

And I sat there for hours, replenishing every lost nutrient and constantly changing their bandages soaked in blood.

A few moments later, the healer walked in, his face looking very grim.

"Did you find something?" I shot up to my feet.

"Yes..." He walked in, with two skilled nurses behind him. They had a bunch of medicines and even some local herbs.

"Are you going to give her all that?" I gasped. "What the hell is wrong with her?"

"Thank the goddess, you saved her in time." He whispered, as he drew in some medicine into a syringe.

He turned her over and pulled down the flimsy shorts from her butt. There was a large bruise right there, and it was already turning blue.

"She was given poison." He pointed out. "It’s a miracle she is still alive and this medicine will keep her alive for now."

"A poison so potent to bring down a blood wolf?" I raised a brow as I wondered where Diego had gotten that.

Did he bring down Ciara this way too?

"Can you save her?" I asked, as my eyes darted between them. I was really trying to hold down the sinking feeling inside of me.

If she died, the boys would go crazy. I had only just found out about their love for her, but I could see the craziness too and the subtly creeping obsession over her.

However, the healer’s grim look didn’t ease at all.

I held his shoulders, with my fingers digging into his flesh, "You can save her, right?"
