The Illegitimate Flame: Bride of Ashes
Chapter 111- He’ll be back soon
CHAPTER 111: CHAPTER 111- HE’LL BE BACK SOON
Charles disappeared suddenly.
After leaving the hospital, within just a few days, he had learned the shocking truth about his origins—and then uncovered yet another hidden secret.
The whirlwind of emotions left him physically and mentally drained.
That day, when Manfred revealed the final secret to Derrick, both August and Charles had overheard it all.
Janet was right beside Charles, watching as Derrick collapsed to the floor.
The two brothers instinctively held back—no one moved to help him. Instead, they stood at a distance, coldly watching the guilt and regret carve deep lines into Derrick’s aged face, while their own expressions remained unreadable.
August would never forget the inhuman life he endured in Australia—years of pain, betrayal, and suffering.
To realize the man he had always hated was actually his biological father shook him to the core.
Silent and still, he followed Manfred away without a word, needing time to digest the cruel truth.
Charles, however, simply held Janet’s hand and returned to their home.
That night, he didn’t sleep.
The next morning, all he left behind was a phone, with just two words typed on the screen: "Wait for me."
And then—he vanished without a trace.
Janet waited for almost two weeks.
Philip had already woken up, but Charles still hadn’t returned.
"Shaun, you have to know where he is. Please, tell me!"
Janet pleaded repeatedly, harassing Shaun for any news of Charles.
No matter how hard Shaun tried to avoid her, she refused to believe Charles could disappear so completely.
Charles wasn’t the type to run from problems. Even after discovering the truth of his origins, he should’ve handled it with calm.
And even if Derrick had used him, now that Derrick regretted it all, Charles could choose not to forgive him—that was fine.
But how could he forget Janet too?
"My dear aunt, I honestly don’t know where he is. That’s your husband—I have no clue where he went!"
Shaun groaned, frustrated by Janet’s stubbornness beneath her delicate appearance.
She was just like Angela in that way—strong-willed to the core.
"Is he out of the country? Did he leave?"
Janet wasn’t stupid—she had only one conclusion.
Charles must have gone abroad.
Otherwise, how could he vanish for half a month?
He promised her he wouldn’t abandon her.
Philip was still in the hospital, after all.
He couldn’t just hide away.
August had been through so much and survived—she believed Charles had no reason to disappear like this.
Unless...
He had something urgent to deal with.
And Janet had a vague suspicion there was more to the relationship between Charles, Shaun, and Brian than she knew.
That thought terrified her—what if something bad happened to him?
"Janet, don’t jump to conclusions. Charles is fine. He’ll be back soon. Just wait a few more days, okay?"
Shaun had already scolded Charles silently a dozen times in his head.
He had managed to run away smoothly himself, but now Janet was making his life difficult here.
It felt like a personal attack.
"No! You have to know where he is! Please, Shaun, just tell me. I only want to know where he is!"
Janet’s tear-filled eyes looked up at Shaun, pleading so desperately that no one could say no—especially since she was his brother’s woman.
But Shaun had his principles.
Charles had entrusted him with secrets that Janet was not to know.
And he would never betray that trust.
Just as Shaun was about to refuse, his office door was suddenly kicked open.
No need to guess who—it was only his beloved wife, Angela, who could be that bold.
"Hey, Shaun, you sure you’re not going to tell the truth?"
Angela crossed her arms, narrowing her eyes fiercely, giving Shaun a massive headache.
No matter how close brothers were, in front of his wife, Shaun knew his place—second best.
"Angela, I’m really worried about him..." Janet blinked up at Angela with those big, pleading eyes that immediately tugged at Angela’s kind heart. Angela couldn’t help but soften, and she quickly shot a glare at Shaun.
"Fine, if you don’t want to tell her, I won’t force you. But listen—no crawling into my bed for a whole month!"
Angela slammed her hand on the table, shooting Shaun a fierce look. Shaun’s handsome face instantly flushed purple.
"Baby, I confess already, isn’t that enough?" Shaun blinked helplessly, quietly mourning Charles for a few seconds in his mind. Men, once involved with the woman they love, lose all sense of reason instantly.
"Charles is in Australia? I’m going to find him!"
The moment Janet heard Charles’ location from Shaun, she sprang up from her chair, ready to set off immediately. She didn’t want to wait anymore—she wanted to surprise him.
"Janet, you can’t go!" Shaun looked troubled. Knowing Charles had gone abroad on a mission, he couldn’t let Janet disrupt things now. Charles hadn’t told her because he didn’t want her to worry.
But not seeing him would only make Janet more anxious.
She didn’t care about anything else—she just needed to see him. This painful longing was unbearable to her.
"Ugh, fine, I’ll go with you," Shaun finally gave in. After all, Charles had made great sacrifices for him and Angela when they were in trouble. Now it was his turn to do something for Charles.
Charles, Shaun, Steven, and Brian—they weren’t just ordinary people.
They were members of Hell’s Gate, a secret global organization operating in the shadows.
Trained professionals handpicked by the Gate’s leader, they were sworn to serve by their thirtieth birthdays.
Despite their prestigious family backgrounds and shining public images, no one knew about their dark double lives.
Now, Brian and Shaun had already quit the organization, while Charles and Steven had two years left before their turn.
So when they received an urgent mission from above, there was no time to waste.
That day, Charles went to Australia—maybe also to disappear for a while.
He left without telling Janet, planning to return and start fresh with her—
To let go of all past grudges, no longer hate Derrick, no longer feel indebted to August.
He wanted Janet to fill the emptiness in his heart.
Shaun and Janet immediately boarded a flight to Australia.
By the time they arrived, it was late at night.
But the news they got was devastating: Charles had already left New York two days ago, and he wasn’t returning home.
"Where could he be?"
Janet’s fair, delicate face fell in disappointment.
Shaun looked helpless, but then Janet suddenly thought of a place he might have gone.
"Shaun, thank you for coming with me to Australia. You should go back now. I’ll find him."
Determined, Janet left Shaun behind and set off on her own.
Shaun tried to catch up—but he was already too late.
