The Last Gentleman
Chapter 682: Tooth Fairy
Port City - Deep Tooth.
Its architectural style bears a high similarity to Zion,
or rather, the humans of this continent tend to favor the modern Gothic (Gothic Revival) style when constructing large cities, characterized by tall, slender spires and steeples.
The plagues from the Old World seemed also to favor this architectural style, entirely preserved.
Or perhaps the "Teeth Hall" does not reject human culture;
in fact, it is quite accepting and willing to change.
Of course, although the human architectural style is preserved, elements related to the plague are also added, especially the diverse fungal species introduced by the Arc Sea, giving the entire city both the rules of human civilization and the chaos of disease.
Gah—the city gates were slowly pushed open.
William hadn’t even fully set foot inside when a sea breeze blew towards him, mixed with a thick and rich smell,
including rotting seafood, stinky boots, suppurating sores, and the gases continuously expelled from the swollen bodies of the drowned,
and also a scent very familiar to William, or rather, inherited from Yi Chen’s memories, the smell of disinfectant often found in modern hospitals or dental clinics.
The presence of this disinfectant smell amidst the others was like the finishing touch that heightened the complexity and layers of foul odor to another level, so effective that it could directly invade the mouth of any newcomer.
It washed over the visitor’s thoughts like a high fever from within.
Generally speaking, any outsider coming here, even those from the Old World who claimed to have seen much, would feel their stomachs wrenched by mighty force, vomitting endlessly.
Yue!
Even William felt nauseous due to the effects of the disinfectant and immediately created a filtering device for his respiratory tract, donning a familiar prickly face mask that filtered the foul smells and also highlighted his association with the Monastery, helpful for conducting business.
Principal Daislin seemed to have foreseen the extreme stench produced by the cross-infection, having enveloped herself in an invisible starmist early on to block the odors.
Stepping through the gateway, into the city,
the city streets he stepped on were even more exaggerated than the previous highways,
the former concrete roads replaced by sea corpses, covered with dead deep-sea creatures, primarily fish, from the huge-bodied whales to tiny Dwarf sharks tightly embedded into the ground without leaving any gaps, and even professionally "leveled" by construction crews.
The fish that made up the streets were not completely dead;
their eyes could still move, watching every passerby, and each fish retained a set of healthy teeth.
The buildings standing here were also extremely damp, with the external walls of the area below three stories covered in dense barnacle structures.
William was slightly surprised to find that this city even had electricity.
Not only were the streetlights lit, but every household showed light shining out, through the thick fog, one could even sort of see the giant lighthouse standing at the shore’s end, providing illumination for ships setting out to sea.
It meant that the Patients here retained the power plant and learned to utilize electricity.
The two of them had not walked far along the street,
when a small group of three, wrapped in pure white hardened robes, approached from the opposite direction,
their faces were each dominated by a large horizontal mouth that took up 40% of their area, with no other organs.
Their mouths appeared to be ’smiling,’ lacking any lip structure, so their teeth were completely exposed. The upper and lower rows were completely symmetrical, neat and white, with not a speck of filth between the teeth.
Parasite Nash’s eyes lit up at the sight of this particular team.
"Tooth Fairy! No... it’s a new type of Tooth Fairy leaning towards your human style.
The real Tooth Fairies look even stranger, with teeth growing all over their external surface for décor, even the organs used for reproduction, seemingly having another purpose.
The Tooth Fairies approaching seemed much more restrained, easier for humans to accept... perhaps they are humans from this side infected with a bacteriophage virus in the mouth."
"Tooth Fairy?"
"Yes, they are the most basic unit under the Teeth Hall, comparable to the True Dead of the Original Tomb, the cancer patients of Cancer Palace, the sheep of Fertility Forest, or the monks of the Monastery.
However, this group of Tooth Fairies is relatively high ranking and are also experts in medicine;
it’s best not to provoke them even in the Old World.
Otherwise, offending the Teeth Hall can complicate many things."
When the Tooth Fairy approached William, they bowed politely, with the leader even reaching into his mouth and plucking out a tooth as a meeting gift.
William, taking it as a local custom, accepted the tooth and placed it in his pocket.
The leader began to speak, not through vocal cords,
but by clenching and grinding teeth, making a skin-crawling noise between the teeth,
"Welcome to Deep Tooth,
as Silver Circle Patients, you two seem not restricted by this world;
you must be essentially human? It’s remarkable that you have grown to this level as humans and even gained favor from the Source Epidemic Area.
Although we do harbor a certain amount of Deep Sea Epidemic here, our main association is with the Old World’s "Teeth Hall." If the two of you have any medical needs, you simply need to pay the corresponding ’coin’, and we will do our utmost to provide satisfactory service.
"Is there anything we can help you with?"
Principal Daislin had intended to discuss directly about the ship sailing issue, but William spoke first.
"Can you perform a full-body examination here?"
"Of course, but as you have already reached the Silver Circle standard, I’m afraid only our highest level of examination will satisfy you."
"How much does it cost?"
"We have two payment methods here, for Ancient Coins it’s about 100 per person for the highest level of examination.
If you’re a bit tight on money, we can do a free dental check;
we will price it based on the quality of your teeth, and payment can be made through your teeth."
"Money is no issue, take us there."
"Please follow us."
As William quickly followed, the principal asked in bewilderment, "I thought you were in a rush? How come you have time to linger here now? And what’s this about a medical examination? I don’t want to be involved."
"I want to see just how good these Tooth Fairies’ medical skills are, it may be beneficial for the upcoming negotiations on the Moon.
Principal, I don’t know if you remember, Moon Scar also specializes in medicine and he has even established his own clinic on the Moon."
"Hmm."
Daislin didn’t say much more;
the two followed the team of Tooth Fairies to the largest hospital in Deep Tooth, which had a special tooth hanging at the apex of its arched front door inscribed with ancient text.
[Teeth Hall - Deep Tooth Subdivision]
Given the flow direction of the surrounding gray matter, William could discern a "passage" linked to the Old World located inside the hospital, possibly leading directly to the real Teeth Hall.
Hearing that a Silver Circle patient was coming for an examination here, the entire hospital sprang into action, even opening a dedicated passage.
"Both of you are having the examination?"
"No, just me."
"All right~ family members or friends, please wait in the lobby, and the one being examined, please remove any parts that do not belong to you beforehand."
"Okay."
William made a gesture as if digging his ears, directly pulling out a Parasite.
"Nash, stay outside with Principal Daislin while maintaining your Parasite form, so as not to scare anyone... after all, your identity as a Circus Executioner seems to be quite well-known."
"As you command, boss!"
The Tooth Fairies were astonished to see William actually extract another Silver Ring Parasite from his head, and started to speculate privately about the mysterious young man’s real identity.
Soon,
stripped of his coat, completely naked, William walked into the examination area,
his abdomen’s unique structure’s Abyss also amazed the entire hospital, prompting all the Tooth Fairies in the hospital to flock to the surveillance room, wanting to see what this young man’s body was really like.
Following the prompts given over the loudspeaker,
William stepped into something akin to the Iron Virgin’s living coffin, filled densely with specialized sensitive teeth adhering to his entire body, starting the examination, and teeth occasionally grazing and nibbling at the surface of his physique when necessary.
After the examination,
the hospital’s administrator, accompanied by a group of Tooth Fairies, approached the scene, bowed slightly, and said with slight apology:
"I’m sorry, but our facilities are unable to fully penetrate your physical body, and the evaluations we’ve made are not up to the standard! We will refund the relevant fees and offer compensation."
"So the examination didn’t work?" William also felt a bit disappointed.
"There is... but it would have to be checked personally by an assistant director or director level ’Dentist’ from the Old World, and due to the restrictive nature of world traversing, the cost to have an expert come for the examination would be very high."
"How high?"
"At least three thousand coins as a base."
"That’s fine, go ahead," William said, promptly taking out three thousand coins from his greed ring as a deposit, "If that’s not enough, I can add more."
"Alright, but the dentists might not necessarily agree to come over;
we also need to provide your personal information to the Teeth Hall to see if any dentists are interested in your condition to potentially cross worlds.
For now, you and your friend should stay temporarily at the hotel next to the hospital, and we will notify the owner in advance to take good care of you."
