CHAPTER 316: CHAPTER 316: LET’S BREAK UP

"Dad!!"

Samantha Sullivan’s eyes were full of fear. How could she marry someone else? Apart from Evan Yancy, she didn’t like anyone else. How could she marry someone she didn’t like!

"This matter is not up for discussion, unless you want to see me dead!"

Dad Sullivan’s voice was light as he turned and got into the car. The door stood open as if waiting for Samantha to make a decision.

Evan Yancy was still kneeling on the ground, but neither Mom Sullivan nor Dad Sullivan spared him a glance.

Heartaching, Samantha knelt down alongside him, her face already wet with tears.

"Evan Yancy..."

She trembled as she spoke, biting her teeth tightly.

"Let’s break up."

Evan’s face turned pale instantly, and as she got up, he reached out to grab her wrist.

"I know you’re being forced. I’ll wait for you."

It was as if a hole had been punched in his heart, now bleeding profusely.

Samantha turned her back to him, her tears flowing even more fiercely. Continuing like this, it was just mutual torment.

She got in the car, looked back at him, and then closed the door.

Evan stood there, silent, watching as the car drove further and further away.

Eleanor Hollis had known all along that it was too difficult for the two of them to be together. Samantha might seem carefree, but she cared most about her family. She couldn’t leave everything behind for Evan.

Moreover, her brother was still lying in a hospital bed. She was the Sullivan Family’s only hope.

"Evan..."

She wanted to comfort him but didn’t know how to speak. Sometimes reality is just that cruel.

Evan didn’t speak and only slowly replied after getting in his car.

"I’m leaving."

Hugo Quinn and Eleanor Hollis nodded, and when the car completely left, the once noisy place suddenly turned silent.

"Let’s go inside."

Hugo wrapped his arm around her waist, afraid she’d catch a cold in the strong wind outside.

Eleanor Hollis bowed her head, heavy with concern, a bit worried about Samantha’s situation.

Her two good friends seemed to have had as difficult a path in their love lives as she had. It took her five years to finally see the light; how long would it take for them?

At that moment, Samantha was tightly watched by Dad and Mom Sullivan. Sitting in the car, she dared not move. When they reached the Sullivan Family home, she was pushed out and nearly stumbled.

But Dad Sullivan didn’t look at her at all and went straight inside.

Samantha suddenly felt wronged, tears welling up in her eyes.

Once inside the living room, she dared not sit, just stood there.

"Kneel down!"

Dad Sullivan’s voice was loud, making her eardrums ache.

Samantha bent down and knelt. Evan was right that the family was biased, leaning toward the brother who was already lying in bed.

When her brother got into trouble, only then did her parents turn their focus onto her.

Her brother had always doted on her, unwilling to see her face any grievances, so she hadn’t noticed their partiality before.

Mom Sullivan, long speechless with anger, grew even angrier upon seeing her like this and yanked at her hair furiously.

"What did you promise us the last time?! You said you’d have nothing to do with Evan Yancy! Completely cut ties! You lied to us! Samantha, now you’ve learned to deceive us too, haven’t you? Did Evan teach you to say that? I knew he was up to no good, trying to ruin our family’s relations!!"

Samantha’s scalp felt like it was being torn away, her tears falling nonstop.

"Mom, Mom, let go, it hurts."

She had never been in such a sorry state. The always carefree Samantha was bittersweet beneath it all.

"It hurts? Do you think our hearts don’t hurt?! Samantha, break it off with him quickly. In the coming days, we’ll set you up with a few dates. You must get married next month to cut all ties between you two!"

Mom and Dad Sullivan shared a look, concluding that this approach was feasible.

Samantha’s head and heart ached. She really wanted to ask these two what they took her for.

"I don’t want to get married..."

With her head lowered, she said slowly, the floor cold, as if that chill seeped up from her knees to her head.

"It’s not up to you. We’ll choose the person. You just have to put on the wedding dress when the time comes."

Their faces remained indifferent, ignoring her pain entirely.

Samantha slowly stood up from the floor, suddenly not wanting to spend another second in this house.

"Where are you going?!"

Seeing her heading for the door, Dad Sullivan’s face turned dark at once. Was she going to find Evan Yancy again? Could she really not let go of that man?!

Samantha’s body stiffened, her hand already opening the door.

"I’m going to the hospital to see my brother."

Mom Sullivan’s face was filled with scorn, shattering the teacup on the table with a loud crash.

"If you really cared about your brother, how could you be with the one who harmed him? Don’t play the cat crying for the mouse here. I see you’re just looking for an excuse to meet Evan Yancy. Come sit down. Without our permission, you’re not to go anywhere these days!"

Samantha’s tears flowed again. Once she realized her parents were biased, she could read other meanings into every word they spoke.

"Dad, Mom, I’m already an adult..."

She wanted to calm down and talk some sense into them, but Mom Sullivan had already put a fruit knife to her neck.

"If you dare to step out that door, I’ll slit my throat."

Samantha’s pupils contracted, her heart gripped by an unseen hand, squeezing it until it hurt, difficult to breathe.

She always knew her mother had a fierce nature. If she said she’d do it, she naturally would. She’d always had a soft heart for family.

Taking a deep breath, she slowly closed the living room door.

Only then was Mom Sullivan satisfied, immediately pulling out her phone to call several men she’d contacted before, arranging dates.

Samantha didn’t want to sit in the living room, planning to head upstairs to her own room.

"Give me your phone, so you won’t call Evan Yancy."

Mom Sullivan suddenly spoke again, her gaze cold as if she wasn’t looking at her own daughter.

Samantha’s body stiffened once more, painstakingly taking her phone from her bag and placing it on the coffee table.

The phone quickly rang, and the caller was indeed Evan Yancy.

Samantha closed her eyes in despair, not wanting to see the mockery in her parents’ eyes, as if she were an unforgivable sinner.

"Crash!"

Mom Sullivan smashed the phone out at once. The phone that rang moments ago was now shattered to pieces.

"Don’t let me see you with him!"

The phone was smashed into bits, showing just how much force Mom Sullivan had used, as if the phone were Evan Yancy himself.

"I understand, Mom."

Samantha said wearily, no longer wanting to struggle, as she climbed the stairs and slowly closed her bedroom door.

She was like a bird caught in her parents’ hands, unable to fly away, without even the courage to hope for the future.

After her brother’s accident, all the family’s burdens rested solely on her shoulders.
