The Long Road to Love: The Capable CEO Dad
Chapter 68: Humble
CHAPTER 68: CHAPTER 68: HUMBLE
Eleanor Hollis’s tact pleased Hugo Quinn, so he followed her into the room.
Eleanor slowly packed her meager belongings, noticing Hugo patiently waiting in the living room.
She suddenly wondered, how did she and Hugo end up in this situation?
She called Samantha Sullivan, saying she’d be moving out today.
Samantha’s eyes showed a flash of understanding, realizing that Hugo must have sought her out, and couldn’t help but start persuading her.
"The Great President Quinn is so busy with work, yet he personally came to get you. I think he might genuinely care for you. Why not try getting along with him? Maybe he could be a good match for you."
As Eleanor’s friend, she certainly didn’t want to see Eleanor end up lonely in the future.
After five years of marriage, she probably had lost faith in men.
"You know what kind of family the Quinton Family is like. Although the old man treats me well, if anything were to happen between me and Hugo, I’d probably be sent out of Serenford immediately."
She understood the old man; he was just and impartial, but in his heart, the most important thing was the Quinton Family’s reputation.
If she got together with Hugo, it would be a slap in the face for the Quinton Family.
The Quinton Family had already faced quite a few rumors because of two consecutive divorces among the men. At this time, she definitely couldn’t provoke the old man.
Samantha nodded, realizing that Eleanor saw things clearly, so she didn’t say more.
Eleanor hung up the phone, dragged her suitcase out, and didn’t know what to say when she saw Hugo waiting outside.
"Let’s go."
Hugo took the suitcase from her hands, acting very affectionately.
Having already shared his feelings with Eleanor, now all his actions were undisguised.
Eleanor said nothing, her mind still echoing with Samantha’s last warning.
"Hugo is the most capable man in the Quinton Family. What he sets his eyes on, he will get. Eleanor, I’m worried that if you go head-to-head with him, you’ll be the one to suffer. The tactics in high society are incredibly frightening."
Eleanor knew this, which was why she began worrying about her future.
Soon, Hugo led her to the new home, slightly better than Samantha’s place, with adequate security, ensuring that such things as being followed wouldn’t happen.
"You can live here from now on."
Hugo knew Eleanor might be somewhat resistant to him now, so he refrained from making other intimate gestures.
"Mommy."
Marcus walked out of the bedroom, rubbing his eyes.
Eleanor paused, immediately crouched down to rub the child’s head, "Did we disturb your sleep?"
Hugo had brought Marcus here first, then picked up Eleanor.
Marcus was bored alone in the apartment, so he went to the bedroom to sleep.
Just after he fell asleep, the two returned.
Marcus knew this was Eleanor’s future home, and he was determined to be wherever his mommy was.
And Eleanor didn’t reject this child, so when she heard he wanted to stay, she didn’t refuse.
However, staying with them was also Hugo.
The apartment was spacious enough, with several empty rooms apart from the master bedroom.
She quickly made a simple meal of three dishes and a soup. Finished eating, she started submitting resumes online.
She was done helping with Marcus’s medical treatment, and since she liked the child, it didn’t feel right to keep taking money from Hugo.
That would make her feel as if she were being kept.
So these days, she kept submitting resumes online, hoping some company would hire her.
But her educational background wasn’t that high in Serenford, a city of fierce competition, attracting many young dream chasers.
Plus, being the capital and the largest economic center, Eleanor’s education wasn’t impressive here.
So just after sending out her resume, she received several rejection emails.
She wasn’t discouraged and continued to screen companies, resubmitting her resume.
"Are you looking for a job?"
Hugo stood behind her, seeing her submitting resumes and feeling somewhat unhappy.
Hadn’t he said he’d pay her?
Eleanor didn’t turn around, "Mr. Quinn, I’ve finished helping with Marcus, and it doesn’t feel right to keep taking your money. Grandma is about to be discharged, and while I have a little money, Serenford’s prices are so high that we wouldn’t be able to live here for long. I need to quickly find a stable job."
What she said made a lot of sense, and Hugo almost believed her.
He sat beside her, brows furrowed, "You can come to my company."
Grandeur Group was hiring recently, and as long as she wanted to go, he’d ensure everything was arranged.
Eleanor stopped typing on the keyboard, still unable to understand what attracted Hugo to her.
"No need, Grandeur Group is such a big company, everyone applying is a graduate from a prestigious school. With my education, they wouldn’t consider me even for a janitor."
Even if she went, she’d probably just be oppressed. The larger the company, the more ruthless it is.
She didn’t think she had the capability to survive in such a place.
"Are you trying to avoid me?"
Hugo wasn’t stupid; he slowly drew closer to Eleanor, trying to discern something from her expression.
But Eleanor remained calm, submitting a few more resumes before speaking.
"Mr. Quinn, you’re overthinking."
Hugo’s brow tightened further. He clearly felt that since declaring his feelings, her attitude towards him had grown colder.
His heart ached, especially seeing her handle it all so indifferently, making him feel even more uncomfortable.
At night, Marcus slept beside him, but Hugo lay staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep.
He got up, took a cigarette, and went to the balcony outside the living room.
The night breeze carried a hint of chill. He lit the cigarette and quietly smoked.
"Click."
The sound of a door opening behind him. He turned to see Eleanor standing at the balcony door, wrapped in a bathrobe.
Eleanor hadn’t expected him on the balcony as well and was about to retreat when she felt a tight grip on her wrist, pinned against the wall suddenly.
"Don’t want to see me?"
Hugo’s face was a little somber. Was it wrong to like someone?
Eleanor lowered her eyes, "Sorry to interrupt your thoughts. I didn’t know you were here."
"Eleanor!"
Hugo roared her name, his gaze carrying a trace of hurt.
"Do you really not like me? Not even a little..."
Hearing his cautious tone, Eleanor felt inexplicably uncomfortable.
Who was Hugo? He was the king in the business world, commanding respect. How could he be so humble?
