Holding our breath, we scanned our surroundings, but the vast underground chamber remained silent as ever.

"Did you hear that?"

I asked Ethan and Kellyan. Both men nodded at the same time.

"It sounded like a rat, but… the noise was too loud for that."

"Exactly. It was way too loud to be just a rat."

Squeak.

Squeak, squeak, squeak—

No sooner had Ethan spoken than the squeaking noises echoed again, this time louder and more prolonged.

We strained our ears, pinpointing the direction of the sound.

"Miss Cherry, shine the light over here."

Ethan motioned toward a spot in the darkness. I turned my torch in the direction he indicated.

And then I saw something shifting faintly in the shadows.

Underneath an arched column, something was rushing past in a long, writhing line, like sausages strung together.

Getting closer, I realized—they were rodent-like creatures, each the size of a grown man’s head, scurrying in a neat formation toward some unknown destination.@@novelbin@@

"Ugh! Damn it! Rats?!"

Kellyan, who had remained unfazed even when facing monsters, visibly shuddered and recoiled in horror. He must really hate rats.

"Where are they going?"

Ordinary virus-infected creatures lacked intelligence. Their vision was poor, so they typically relied on scent and sound to move.

Yet, despite having three humans right in front of them, these mutant rats seemed far too preoccupied to care.

Any normal virus creature would have lunged at us the moment it noticed our presence, but these ones were moving with clear purpose, as if they had a destination in mind.
