The Martial Mage
Chapter 83: Selection trial
CHAPTER 83: SELECTION TRIAL
"We have to deal with the summoner first. Jordan, you’ll hold the spirit beast and I’ll deal with their captain. Jane, you wait for the opportunity to bombard their summoner with your spells. Also...keep an eye out for their wizard." Adriana warned the two of them as she explained their tactics.
They were on one side of the circular concrete platform in the training field room of the military headquarters. On the other side of the platform was also a team of three. Their captain, a spearman, and two girls, one wizard and the other a summoner.
The four generals and the Marshall were at the top of the stands. The Marshall sat above them and the four of them, including Roger and Vale sat one row below and no one else could be seen near them.
The other two teams of the generals had already finished their match, and Raven’s team had won without dropping a sweat. And now, they waited in the stands for the final match with the winner of this round.
The competition was being held within the teams of the generals to select the best one for sending them to the team competition to be held in the Regelak kingdom capital, on the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of the king.
Gemburn military was given a slot for one team as invitations were sent to all the cities within the kingdom.
The craze for gaining the spot to this competition was so high because of the rewards the king was offering. The team who wins will get fifty thousand gold coins, a disaster class beast mana stone, and a drop of ’Life boon’, the pinnacle medicine that can heal any disease or wounds.
"Start!" Yelled a military captain below the platform, acting as the referee.
A green runic circle appeared in front of the summoner girl, from where, a bluish translucent lightning wolf appeared.
The summoned spirit beast ranged from one start to ten star beasts. Ten stars being the legendary kings of the spirit realm. The more higher the beast, the less translucent their body is when summoned and from six stars, the beast summoned, appear with their fully defined body.
The lightning wolf here is a three star beast, thus having a translucent body.
The lightning wolf rushed at Adriana, and the wizard girl started chanting as a runic circle formed in front of her.
Jordan rushed in front of Adriana as the wolf collided on the shield. Lightning rushed from the wolf’s body, passing through the shield into Jordan’s body as his face grimaced in pain, and a glowing mana stone wrapped around his bicep with a belt dimmed a little.
The mana stone was fitted with a belt on all of their bodies. It was a special device that measured the amount of damage received by the decrease in power of the shield surrounding their body. When the mana stone breaks apart, that person is considered to be unable to fight and when all the members of the team’s mana stones break. They are eliminated.
A fireball then rushed towards them fired by the wizard girl. Jane immediately casted a spell as a stone wall jutted out of the floor and blocked the fireball.
The fireball broke the wall creating a hole as stones flew away. Adriana rushed out of it and slashed her sword at their captain.
He lifted his spear up and blocked her sword with his long shaft of the spear. Adriana channeled mana into her sword and pushed him back as he slid a few steps back from the force. She immediately rushed to the side, aiming to finish the summoner.
But instead of getting impatient and running, the summoner just smirked and didn’t move. Just when Adriana was about to slash at her, a wind arrow arrived at her back in a breakneck speed. She couldn’t react in time as it hit her squarely on the back and dimmed her mana stone by almost half as she flew away to the distance.
The wizard was smiling upon being successful, but her smile vanished instantly as a huge wind arrow arrived right in front of her and blasted her away, out of the platform as her mana stone broke.
"Bingo." Jane smirked as their plan worked flawlessly.
The summoner and the captain were shocked. They never thought that instead of aiming at the summoner, they would finish their wizard first.
The summoner immediately casted another runic circle, and a translucent bear came out of it. It roared and rushed towards Adriana. She then called back her wolf, so as to protect herself, but the wolf was nowhere to be seen.
Jordan had discarded his shield and was holding the wolf’s neck, strangled under his arms. His mana stone was getting dim at a fast rate, but he didn’t care, as he believed the match would end soon anyway.
Adriana channeled mana into her feet and instantly vanished from her spot. She left a trail on her path and appeared right in front of the summoner. The spirit bear slowly transformed into motes of light as she had already slain it on the way.
The captain rushed towards them, trying to save their summoner. But Adriana was fast as she slashed and the summoner’s mana stone broke. The wolf vanished into motes of light.
She immediately lifted her sword up. The blade of the spear struck her sword as a metallic clang rang in the air. He maniacally started swinging his spear. Adriana was getting pushed back as she blocked and evaded the strikes periodically.
While clashing around, they reached the edge of the platform, the spearman saw a chance, he channeled mana on the tip of the spear and thrust it forward to push her out of the platform.
But Adriana blocked the spear as her sword hit the tip and slid off to the side, and while sliding along the shaft of the spear, sparks flew and then she slashed at him, breaking his mana stone with the hit and moved forward, narrowly avoiding falling off the platform and winning the round.
"Winner, team Adriana!" the referee announced as the three of them jumped up and celebrated.
"Look at them getting excited over winning against the weaklings." Vantar, the bald young man in Raven’s team laughed mockingly.
"Let them celebrate. They’re gonna cry in the next round anyway." Mina, their support wizard in a pink robe and glasses said.
"You don’t need to waste your time captain, we’ll handle them." said Shadow, their assassin.
"What do you think Katsu?" Raven asked the skinny young man with long green hair tied into a bun wearing a long black coat, and a long katana in a black glazing sheath placed standing beside him.
"I think it’ll be fun captain." Katsu said with a wide grin.
