“Poor Dr. Dorsey-she’s probably just letting off steam. Though she’s been married for five years, her rich husband won’t eveny a finger on her. Instead, he spends almost every day with Ms. Berger, his unforgettable love.”

“Totally. He abandoned Dr. Dorsey on their wedding night and never came back. Now she has to face his mistress and even treat her. I feel so bad for her.”

Vanessa went back to her office.

Looking at the closed office door, some doctors and nurses whispered among themselves.

Vanessa picked up her ss, gulped down the water in one go, and mmed it down, her gaze icy.

“Vanessa. I don’t love you at all. Susanna’s the only one I love, and that will never change. I was forced to marry you, and I’ll never touch you. From now on, just y the role of a dutiful wife. Don’t ever fantasize about anything else. Love? Such a thing doesn’t exist in our marriage. It’s in name only. Stay out of my life-we’ll each live as we please.”

Five years had passed. However, she still remembered every word Nathan had said to her on their wedding night.

She clenched her fingers tightly.

When they were kids, she used to trail behind him, calling out sweetly, “Nate! Nate, wait for me…”

Back then, he’d always stop and wait for her with a smile. Then he’d take her hand, stroke her soft hair, and joke about bow clingy she was.

It convinced her that he loved her just as deeply as she loved him. Otherwise, when his grandmother, Madeline Pow- ell, proposed an arranged marriage, she would never have agreed.

Vanessa blinked hard, fighting back tears. Then she stood up, walked into the bathroom, and dashed icy water across her face. As she lifted her gaze, she stared at her delicate, lonely reflection in the mirror, and her heart clenched hard.

She had been suffering for the past five years.

How did she manage to endure all the humiliation for so long?

Just then, her phone rang. It was a call from her bestie, Kathleen Cowan.

The instant the call connected, Kathleen’s mischievous giggle rang out. “Well, Vanny? How wasst night? Did you

have fun?”

Vanessa blushed right away.

Vanessa’s tone grew stern. “Kathleen, you’ve gone too far this time.”

Obviously unconvinced, Kathleen started to lecture Vanessa. “Come on, Vanny. Nathan’s with his mistress every day, and you’re twenty-five already. If not me, you would have still been a virgin. If he gets to have all the fun, why can’t you do the same? I did this for your own good. You should’ve stopped wasting time ying his dutiful wife, OK?”

“Forget it. I’ll give you a pass this time. But if it happens again, you’re toast! And seriouslyst night stays between us, or we’re done as besties,” Vanessa hissed before hanging up the phone, her heart still pounding from the scenesst night.

Kathleen pouted, snorting, “Yeah, yeah. ssic you-hanging up on me whenever we talk about this.”

Just then, a patient knocked on the door. Vanessa started to focus on work right away.

She was taking off her white coat after work when her phone buzzed. ncing at the screen, she was surprised to see Nathan’s name shing on it.
