The Mighty Mage
Chapter 660 660: Fourty-Nine Days
Soon, forty-nine days passed. It was finally time for Gu Jin and Long Yifan to present the Mage God to the world, just as they had sworn.
But during those forty-nine days, something strange had taken place.
The Gods of the Celestial Realm had reached out to them again and again. For months now, divine envoys had tried to summon Gu Jin and Long Yifan back to the Celestial Realm, sending spiritual messages and divine symbols hidden within the wind and stars. Yet every time, Gu Jin refused.
Long Yifan, of course, supported her completely. "We owe them nothing," he had said coldly.
But in these forty-nine days, their approach changed slightly. For the first time, they showed a trace of hesitation, a reluctant expression, carefully acted.
So when the envoy from the Celestial Realm appeared this time, Gu Jin and Long Yifan greeted him with a polite nod.
The envoy nearly trembled from excitement. For so long, these two had ignored his existence, refusing even the smallest acknowledgment. Now, seeing them respond, even slightly, was enough to make him believe the gods had granted him a miracle.
He bowed deeply, his silver armor clinking. "Lady Gu, Lord Long, I know that what happened in the Celestial Realm was unjust. You were betrayed, plotted against. The entire divine court knows that."
He hesitated before adding softly, "You must hate us. You must hate the heavens themselves. But I promise, if you return, the Celestial Council will restore your honor. You will live a life of peace and privilege. Every benefit due to you will be yours."
Gu Jin watched him quietly, her face calm, unreadable. "There is one matter," she said slowly, her voice smooth as flowing water. "If you can handle it well, I will… consider your offer."
The envoy straightened immediately. "Anything, Lady Gu. What is it you desire?"
Gu Jin's eyes glinted faintly. "The Mage God of this world was slain. A new god must rise to take his place. You should do something about that."
The envoy blinked, startled by the directness of her tone, but he recovered quickly and nodded. "Of course. That can be arranged."
Then he added eagerly, "And if you return to the God City, no one will dare question you again. Any charge or punishment will have to be approved by you personally before it can even be spoken aloud."
Gu Jin sighed lightly, waving a hand. "I'm not interested in such empty benefits. Handle what I've asked for first."
The envoy bowed low, his expression respectful. "At once." Then, without another word, he vanished in a flash of divine light.
When the light faded, peace returned to the island. Gu Jin stretched lazily beneath the warm glow of the setting sun, while Long Yifan leaned against the marble wall beside her, watching her with a faint smirk.
He reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Finally alone again," he murmured, his voice teasing.
Gu Jin gave him a warning glance. "Don't even think about it."
Long Yifan chuckled, pretending innocence. "I wasn't thinking about anything."
"You were," Gu Jin said flatly. "I can feel it."
He grinned. "You can't blame me. We've been locked away from the world for months."
Gu Jin raised a brow, her tone calm but edged with danger. "Do you really want to continue this conversation? Or do you want me to punish you again?"
Long Yifan let out a long, suffering sigh and leaned back. "You're cruel, Jin."
She smiled faintly. "No. I'm merciful. If I weren't, you wouldn't have survived the last time."
Indeed, for the past few months, their relationship had been a constant tug of passion and restraint. Long Yifan had incredible stamina, unnaturally so, and if Gu Jin hadn't intervened each time, their "sessions" could have lasted entire days. Even divine bodies had limits.
So Gu Jin had established strict rules: no overindulgence, rest days each week, and punishment for disobedience. Long Yifan had learned to restrain himself… mostly.
Still, every now and then, he would try to tempt her again. Sometimes, she gave in. Other times, she forced herself to stop, reminding him sternly, "A god must know restraint."
Yet when she woke up the next morning, she often ended up glaring at him, muttering, "You really don't know when to stop."
And so, despite their closeness, Gu Jin often avoided his touch, demanding at least one full day of peace every week; otherwise, she joked, she might collapse for an entire year.
Days slipped by quickly, and just before the forty-ninth day, the envoy from the Celestial Realm returned. He brought a message and an official decree.
It was finally time.
On the morning of the forty-ninth day, the familiar crack appeared in the sky as three influential figures descended upon the island: the Head of the Mighty Mage Couple Selection Department, the President chosen by all nations, and the Head of the International Magic Association. Behind them was an army of mages.
As they stepped through the glowing portal, they immediately saw Gu Jin and Long Yifan kneeling before the stone statue of the Mage God, their faces serene.
For a moment, the visitors hesitated. The scene felt almost sacred.
Rick, the Head of the International Magic Association, cleared his throat uneasily. "Will God appear today?"
Gu Jin slowly turned her head, her expression calm. "Yes," she said. "He will."
Before her words could settle, Marcus, the Head of the Mighty Mage Couple Department, snorted loudly.
"Lies! You've been saying that for weeks. If he's truly returning, why hasn't he appeared already? Are you planning to delay again? What's next? Another forty-nine days?"
He turned to Rick with visible frustration. "We should stop wasting time and execute them now. They're deceiving everyone."
Gu Jin tilted her head slightly, her red eyes narrowing.
Marcus froze. For a split second, he felt as if his soul were being crushed by invisible power. His knees nearly buckled. But before he could react further, Gu Jin exhaled softly, and the pressure faded.
She reminded herself that this was not the Celestial Realm. Here, she could not simply obliterate anyone who offended her.
Rick, sensing the tension, quickly turned to the third figure, the President of the Mage World, John. "What do you suggest?"
John hesitated for a long moment before speaking.
"If they truly cannot prove their words today, then we have no choice. The masses demand justice. The world is collapsing...resources fading, elements dying. We cannot allow false prophets to stall us any longer."
Rick sighed heavily, but finally nodded. "Very well."
He raised his hand, mana gathered at his fingertips. "Gu Jin, Long Yifan, you leave us no choice."
But before his spell could strike, a sharp cracking sound echoed through the air.
Crack.
Everyone froze. The sound grew louder. Crack. Crack.
Their eyes turned to the statue before Gu Jin and Long Yifan. Thin lines spread across its surface like lightning veins.
Then, with a blinding flash, the statue shattered completely.
From the cloud of dust and light emerged a tall, radiant figure draped in robes of silver and gold. His eyes gleamed with endless wisdom, and his aura pressed upon every soul present like the weight of the heavens themselves.
The Mage God had returned.
The gathered leaders fell to their knees instantly, faces pale, hearts trembling under divine pressure. Some even cried out in awe.
The god's gaze swept across the assembly before resting gently on Gu Jin and Long Yifan. His voice was deep and calm, echoing like thunder wrapped in silk.
"You have my gratitude," he said. "Your faith has reached me even through eternity. I have seen your sincerity."
He extended a hand, and divine light surrounded them both.
"From this day until the end of time, Gu Jin and Long Yifan shall be bound by fate. Across every world, every universe, and every dimension, you will always find each other and never be apart."
A warm golden light enveloped the couple. Gu Jin and Long Yifan rose, their divine forms glowing before slowly returning to their human shapes.
The leaders and mages stared, speechless. The truth was undeniable. The Mage God stood before them, alive, majestic, merciful.
Those who had doubted now trembled in shame and awe.
The god smiled faintly, his form beginning to fade into light. "I shall return to my realm now. But know this, I will watch over the Mage World. Order shall be restored."
As his light vanished into the heavens, the island trembled once more. The skies cleared, and far away, the dying lands of the Mage World began to heal.
Rivers flowed again, trees blossomed, and the mana veins pulsed with life.
Gu Jin and Long Yifan watched quietly, a serene smile in their eyes.
When the last divine glow disappeared, the mages who remained turned toward them, bowing deeply.
"We… we were wrong," Rick said hoarsely. "Please forgive our ignorance."
Marcus and John followed, lowering their heads in shame. "We doubted you," Marcus said quietly. "We spoke out of fear."
