CHAPTER 26: DINNER PARTY. (1/2)
"Eight hundred thousand dollars has been successfully deposited. Congratulations. Previously I told you I would give you at least $100,000 worth of credit, but I have managed to top it, you can borrow $50,000 more."
The Black Card with the engraved name ’Christopher Luke Harper’ looked premium, unlike his debit card, which doesn’t even have any name at all.
"Sapphire Reserve is this card’s name. We in the Chase banks are proud of it. There are bigger limit cards from this, but those are for what we call in the banking industry ’UHNWI’ clients. I also don’t have the authority to handle them, so you have to do with this. I promise you this is the best you can get."
Mrs. Kim was sipping tea for a long time, she was silent and observing Chris as soon as she heard he was depositing hundreds of thousands of dollars, and he has a tax-paid receipt for every single dollar.
Chris, on the other hand, was intrigued by Sean’s ’UHNWI’ term, the card in his hand looked a bit pale compared to that title, just like how the Rolex on his hand was now a casual watch.
"Tell me more about that term you just used, UHI. What? "
"It’s ’UHNWI,’ ultra-high net worth individual. These are clients who are worth well over a hundred million or more dollars. I would love to see you on that list some day."
"You know what, Sean? Me too."
"Who doesn’t, right? So this card comes with several benefits, like points on spending stuff and zero hassle when traveling. You will get used to it. It was a pleasure doing business with you, and I look forward to our financial journey."
After the handshake Chris left with eight thousand, eight hundred and fifty dollars in cash, which he didn’t deposit in the bank, and a credit card, which can give him access to potentially a million dollars or just fifty thousand shy of a million dollars.
"You really are rich, I thought you just looked good. How about marrying my Min-So?"
"Mrs. Kim, ahaha, nice joke, ah! You’re serious? "
"I am always serious."
"Can’t, I have a girlfriend, Grace, remember? She’s seated in your car?"
"Americans break up easily, tell me when you break up."
Walking ahead, she opened the driver’s seat door like nothing happened while Chris was speechless and couldn’t even explain to Grace what just happened.
"Something the matter?"
"N...Nothing."
Seated in the car, the silence was broken by Grace first, and seeing Mrs. Kim staring at him from the rearview mirror, he just shook his head.
The car entered a quieter suburban area—mostly families like Min-So’s, immigrants, and new Americans. Locals jokingly called it "Little Passport Valley."
Chris and Grace weren’t surprised. Some parts of America could be rude as hell about cultural differences, but this neighborhood felt warmer, more relaxed. Plenty of Americans lived here too—it was just a mixed, easygoing place.
"Min-So’s Appa still lives in Korea, he’s a tech engineer at Samsung. "
"Appa means Dad, Father."
The little translator Min-So looked at Grace to tell her what means what from time to time. Chris found this very intriguing. Grace was not easy to befriend, maybe Min-So’s natural, almost the same-level charisma as her had something to do with it, or her baby-like personality.
The car parked in front of a two-story building, the roads were neat and clean. Chris and Grace got down, smelling lots of spices in the air, both felt amazed, while Min-So and her mother got down as usual.
Mrs. Kim walked ahead and unlocked the wooden door while Min-So tried to accompany Grace with small talk. Chris had to correct her speech patterns several times, otherwise, Min-So would have come off as very hostile and an overconfident flirt.
"I thought you were into women, but you are actually very cute."
"You speak very badly."
"She meant, like, ’You like women.’ ’Into women’ means ’interested in women.’"
Before he got more frustrated, he pushed them inside the wooden door. Min-So naturally took off her shoes, while Grace looked at that with a strange face.
"You need to watch some K-dramas, this is their custom and culture. It’s to respect the home and keep it clean."
Removing his shoes, Chris entered the house while Min-So excitedly waited for Grace at the entrance. There were several paintings hanging on the wall, he could guess this family comes from wealth.
Not Grace Level, but not far off, if they can afford such a nice house in an expensive neighborhood like this, this is not even their own country.
"Min-So’s grandfather bought this place for her. He is still angry at her for joining that stupid girl group, but what can we say to the elder?"
Mrs. Kim came out with a basket full of bread for some reason and then gestured for Chris to sit down beside her on the couch.
"Eat it, I made it. Sorry our house is a bit packed, these are all given by our neighbors, hehe."
Chris was enjoying her bragging while eating the homemade breads, after eating one, she asked if he had washed his hands, to which he just shook his head, so she pointed at the sink.
"I must say, your house is amazing. It almost feels like my house but compact."
"Your house is bigger?"
"Yes, I will take you there someday."
Grace and Min- So entered the room, they looked like they were upstairs, and Grace looked around with curiosity. She even had a temporary home shoe on her foot.
"Grace, come, come, wash your hands first, then taste my bread."
"It’s really tasty."
As Mrs. Kim invited her to eat, Chris returned for another one with his wet hands, the buttermilk bread was his favorite, and Mrs. Kim does put extra butter in it, unlike his sister, who used to be a stingy bird.
"So... Should I cook you guys traditional Korean dishes or Italian "
"Korean" x2
"Italian"
Both Grace and Chris looked at Min-So with a little bit of shock, she was cowering a little. She doesn’t like Korean dishes from her mother’s hand that much, she likes Italian pizza, though.
