When the myriad lights of the City began to extinguish and the urban chaos ebbed into tranquility, the bar street in the city center was still alive with music and laughter.
At the end of the street stood a KTV lit by alluring blue neon signs, distinctly eye-catching. As the doors swung open and shut, melodious singing spilled out into the night.
A woman in a little black dress staggered down the steps, her gaze unfocused, her cheeks tinged with a rosy flush — she was clearly drunk.
"Ruan Yuan, are you okay?" Equally tipsy, Shi Yin hurried forward to steady the swaying woman, his eyes full of concern.
The gathering tonight was organized by a business partner, someone who loved frequenting bar streets and insisted on discussing deals in places like this.
Shi Yin hadn’t intended to bring her along. But in the end, soft-hearted as always, he gave in to her persistence.
"Shi Yin, I can’t walk anymore." Ruan Yuan looped her arms around his neck, her half-closed eyes leaning wearily against his shoulder.
The scent of alcohol on her was overwhelming, nearly drowning out the faint scent of roses she usually carried.
Shi Yin hesitated for a moment before sweeping her into his arms. He carried her bridal-style to the car waiting nearby.
He gently patted her arm twice, his expression a bit uneasy. "Ruan Yuan, let go for a moment."
"No."
"Be good. We’ll be home soon."
"I like holding you." Ruan Yuan murmured, further closing the already little space between them.
She closed her eyes and pressed soft kisses along the side of his neck.
Shi Yin finally understood how troublesome a drunk woman could be. His back tensed, and his hands at his sides balled into tight fists.
Even though his knuckles turned white and veins bulged along his skin, he couldn’t bring himself to push her away, as if silently allowing her every intimate gesture.
The temperature inside the car rose noticeably, the air thick with a sense of intimacy.
Somehow, his shirt collar had been pulled open, her teasing touches tracing down his neck to his collarbone.
When her slender hand grew increasingly bold, he grasped it quickly, his voice hoarse as he tried to stop her, "Ruan Yuan, don’t."
"Don’t what? Hmm?" Ruan Yuan drew out the last note playfully, her soft lips grazing faintly against his collarbone.
She was like a seductive little demon, leaving Shi Yin breathless and off-kilter.
Shi Yin said nothing. He closed his eyes, taking a deep, measured breath in an effort to calm his restless heart.
But no matter how many times he silently chanted "desire is emptiness," her every move still weakened his resolve.
Thankfully, the drive home wasn’t a long one, and the roads were clear at this late hour. Otherwise, Shi Yin feared he might lose his sanity.
"Ruan Yuan, where did you put your keys?" He rummaged through her bag but couldn’t find a trace of them.
"What?"
"Your house keys. Where are they?"
"I don’t know." Ruan Yuan bit playfully at his chin, clinging to him like a vine tightly wrapping around its host.
Her hazy eyes shimmered with a soft veil of mist, and as her lashes fluttered, they brushed gently against his lips like a feather’s caress.
Shi Yin had no choice left. Resolving the situation the only way he could, he turned around and unlocked the door to his own apartment instead.
Carefully, he set the woman down on the couch, his tone carrying a hint of tenderness he hadn’t even noticed himself. "I’ll go get you some water."
The warmth of his embrace abruptly left her, and Ruan Yuan blinked, staring dazedly at the unfamiliar chandelier overhead.
A few moments later, she suddenly sat upright, making her way effortlessly into the master bedroom she had long coveted.
She unzipped the side of her dress and slipped into the bed, pulling the blanket over herself. Like a mischievous little imp, she buried her face into the pillow, inhaling the lingering scent, rolling around in excitement.
Shi Yin returned, glass of water in hand, and glanced around the room in search of her. He never imagined that in such a short span of time, she’d already made herself comfortable on his bed.
He looked at the piled-up blanket on his bed, a wave of helplessness laced with amusement washing over his face. "Ruan Yuan, get up and drink some water."
"Ruan Yuan?"
Shi Yin called out several times, but there was no response.
Sighing, he set the glass down and sat at the edge of the bed. Gently, he patted her a couple of times, worried she might suffocate herself. Without thinking, he lifted the blanket.
The sight underneath nearly ended him on the spot.
"Shi Yin, you’re back." Ruan Yuan’s face bloomed into a radiant smile as she wrapped her arms around his waist, nuzzling affectionately against his chest.
The softness of her body pressed fully against him, every small movement amplifying the sensations between them tenfold.
