CHAPTER 211: 192: WEDDING RUINED, BREAK WITH YUAN LI
In the blink of an eye, Saturday arrived. Standing proudly amidst a cluster of high-rises, the brightly lit Golden Court Hotel was hosting an engagement party.
In the hall where the clinking of glasses intermingled, the space was adorned with pure white roses everywhere. Beside every round table sat a balloon that swayed gently in the breeze.
"Thank you to all the guests for attending my daughter’s engagement party..."
Standing on the main stage, Yu Baisheng beamed with joy as he held the microphone and went through the event’s agenda. He left out not a single polite word, ensuring every formality was covered.
Meanwhile, a door to a nearby dressing room behind him slowly opened.
A girl in a champagne-colored slip dress stepped out, standing tall in her high heels. She straightened her spine as she approached the long-awaiting man seated in a wheelchair.
"Brother Yan," Yu Xinman softly called out to him, her sweet voice melodious as her round and clear eyes sparkled with unmistakable affection.
Chen Yan lifted his gaze, his vision slowly trailing down from her face to her long legs, unable to hide his awe as he praised, "Xinman, you look stunning today."
"Brother Yan, you’re looking handsome yourself today." The girl grinned widely, leaning forward to adjust his tie with care.
Their gazes locked, and with her cheeks slightly flushed, she pressed a gentle kiss to the corner of his lips, the intensity of his gaze enveloping her.
A round of applause erupted. Yu Xinman instinctively walked behind him, pushing his wheelchair as they appeared before the crowd together.
Standing under the spotlight, she basked in the envious gazes cast her way, her vanity reaching unprecedented levels of satisfaction.
It seemed as though she had already become the ultimate winner in life — as if no one would ever stand in her way again.
"Xinman, meeting you has been the greatest blessing of my life," Chen Yan declared sincerely, pressing a kiss on the back of her hand, the one adorned with a ring.
His eyes overflowed with love, as if she were his entire world, leaving room for nothing and no one else.
"Brother Yan, I love you," Yu Xinman choked out, tears welling in her eyes, shimmering faintly as emotions overtook her.
The atmosphere was perfect, everything unfolding like a dreamy fairytale that enveloped them in its bliss, letting them savor the happiness they brought to one another.
"Ah!!"
A piercing shriek shattered the idyllic moment, abruptly pulling them back to reality.
Yuan Li, who had been standing off to the side just moments ago, suddenly collapsed onto the floor, her limbs curling up tightly as she convulsed uncontrollably.
Bulging veins appeared on her forehead, her eyeballs protruding, her once dignified expression twisting into an ugly contortion, terrifying everyone present.
"Mom, what’s wrong?" Yu Xinman hurriedly ran over, crouching down in front of her, discreetly attempting to block the view below.
At that moment, her first thought wasn’t about Yuan Li’s well-being but about how to salvage the embarrassment of such an incident.
"Pain... it hurts so much..." Yuan Li, usually so poised and graceful, now appeared utterly disheveled.
Her neatly tied hair had come undone, strands falling around her face, complementing her spasms in a manner that made her resemble someone deranged.
"Could Mrs. Yu be having a seizure?"
"Oh my god, I’ve never seen something like this before, it’s so horrifying!"
"Seizures run in families, don’t they? Then what about Miss Yu..."
The onlookers whispered and speculated wildly, yet not one person stepped forward to offer assistance.
The chaotic voices infiltrated Yu Xinman’s ears. Hanging her head low, she dug her nails into her palms, her pride crumbling completely in that moment.
Even as Yuan Li was carried away by the ambulance, she remained crouched in the same spot, dazed and unmoving.
"Xinman." A warm hand rested gently on her back, the man’s eyes filled with worry as he comforted her. "Don’t worry, your mother will be alright."
Enveloped in sorrow, Yu Xinman turned and buried herself in his embrace, closing her eyes as her fraught sobs escaped.
She didn’t dare look down, avoiding the scornful, dismissive, or disgusted stares of the crowd.
Yu Baisheng, frazzled and overwhelmed, was no better off than her. Unlike her, however, he couldn’t choose to escape as she did.
He strained to maintain his forced smile, going from guest to guest with relentless explanations, talking until his mouth ran dry, finally suppressing the issue momentarily.
But just as he was about to take a brief moment to breathe, the entrance to the hall suddenly saw the appearance of three police officers.
They walked straight up to Yu Baisheng, compared his image with the photograph in their hands, confirmed their findings, and without hesitation, pulled out a pair of handcuffs.
