Sloane had just stepped out of the academic building when she spotted Marshall standing not far off, his expression anxious as he scanned the area. She frowned, ready to take a detour to avoid him, but Marshall had already seen her and quickly made his way over.

“Sloane!” Marshall called out, his voiceced with urgency.

She was forced to stop. Lifting her gaze, she stared at him coldly. “Something wrong?”

Marshall rushed up to her, wearing an ingratiating smile. “Sloane, I know you’re still mad at me, but the family’s in serious trouble now, are you really going to just stand by and watch? No matter what, you’re still a daughter of the Rivers family. Are you really going to let us go bankrupt without lifting a finger?”

Sloane let out a sharpugh, her tone dripping with unfiltered sarcasm. “Marshall, spare me the guilt trip. What does the Rivers family have to do with me? Did you forget how you all treated me before? Now that Rivers Group is crashing and burning, now you remember I exist?”

His smile froze for a moment, but he quickly recovered, stering on that pleading look again, though his tone took on a faint edge of threat. “Sloane, don’t forget–you’re still a part of the Rivers family! No matter how much you try to deny it, Rivers blood still runs in your veins. If the Rivers family falls, do you really think you’lle out unscathed? What do you think people will say about you? They’ll call you cold, heartless–someone who turned her back on her own family.”

Sloane’s eyes turned even colder, her voice thick with disgust. “Don’t you dare threaten me, Marshall. I couldn’t care less what other people think. But you, you’ve used your own daughter for profit, and now you want to manipte me again with public opinion? What a joke,”

Marshall was left speechless, choking on her words. His face twisted with awkward frustration.

He took a deep breath, forcing down his anger, and softened his tone again. “Sloane, I know I was wrong before, but Rivers Group really needs your help. You

got into ckhawk, and your rtionship with Lucas is good. If you’d just be willing to step up, the Hawthorne family would definitely lend a hand. Are you really okay with watching the Rivers family copse?”

At that, a sneer yed at the corners of Sloane’s lips. “Marshall, you really never show up unless there’s something in it for you. Too bad I couldn’t care less about the Rivers family and I sure as hell won’t go begging Lucas for anything. What happens to the Rivers family has nothing to do with me.”

With that, she turned to leave.

Panic surged through Marshall. He lunged forward and grabbed her wrist, his voice rising in desperation. “Sloane! Are you really going to be this heartless? I’m still your father! If you dare walk away like this, I’ll go to the press, I’ll make sure the world knows what kind of cold–blooded, ungrateful traitor you are!”

Sloane yanked her arm free, her gaze sharp as a de. “Marshall, the moment you threw me into that mental hospital, you stopped being my father. As for the press, go right ahead.”

She didn’t give him a chance to say another word. Turning on her heel, she walked off with purpose.

Marshall stood frozen in ce, watching her retreating figure with resentment etched across his bface/bb. /bSloane was no longer the girl from five years ago, the one he could manipte at will. She had grown stronger, inch by inch, until she’d slipped beyond the Rivers family’s control.

With no other option, Marshall went to plead with the main branch of the family. But the family head wouldn’t even grant him a meeting. Mathilda, meanwhile, took advantage of the moment and sent someone to bring Sloane back to the Rivers estate.

Marshall knew exactly what they were doing–leaving him out to dry while scheming to pull Sloane over to their side.
