Samantha stopped in her tracks and turned to nce at Marshall, her eyes cold and resolute. “So what if I don’te back? The Rivers family is finished. You people have nothing left to offer me. If I don’t walk away now, should I stick around and go down with you? Instead of wasting time on me, maybe you should start thinking about how you’re going to survive bankruptcy.”

Without another word, Samantha walked away from the Rivers family, without hesitation, without a backward nce. She had no intention of going down with them.

When Adrian found out Samantha had left the Rivers family, he refused to believe it. He couldn’t ept that the sister they had doted on and protected would say something so heartless.

Dragging his exhausted body to the school, he went looking for Samantha. But she had no interest in seeing him. Left with no other choice, he called her again and again. Eventually, she answered out of annoyance.

“Adrian, I don’t have anything to do with the Rivers family anymore. You don’t need toe looking for me.”

“Samantha, I know you didn’t mean that,” Adrian said gently, still trying tofort her. “We’re siblings. The Rivers family is your home, how can you just walk away? Dad and mom were only upset when they said those things. Don’t take it to heart. Please,e back.”

On the other end of the line, Samantha let out a sharpugh, her voice filled with biting sarcasm. “Come back? Come back for what? So I can sit around and wait to die with you? The Rivers family is done. You’ve got nothing I want anymore. So why keep up the charade of pretending to be one big happy family?”

“Charade?” Adrian was stunned. “What are you talking about?”

“What do you think I mean?” Samantha dropped the maskpletely. “Don’t tell me you still don’t get it. I’ve never seen any of you as family, I yed along because the Rivers family had things I wanted. That’s the only reason I pretended.”

“Now that the Rivers family’s going under, of course I’m going to find a better way out for myself.” Her voice grew colder, her toneced with open contempt. “What, you thought I’d stick around and suffer with you? If you want a sister so badly, go find Sloane. She’s the real daughter of the Rivers family, your real sister.”

Adrian felt a stabbing pain in his chest, as if someone had driven a knife straight into him. He could hardly believe the wordsing out of the mouth of the girl he’d loved and protected all his life. His hand trembled slightly as he gripped the phone, and his voice wavered.

    “Samantha, you…”

“If you really care about me, Adrian,” she cut in coldly, “then stop trying to contact me.” And with that, she hung up without hesitation.

Adrian stood frozen, staring at his phone. Samantha’s words echoed in his head, over and over. Each sentence hit like a de, slicing deep into his heart.

He muttered to himself, a sh of pain and regret flickering in his eyes. iWe /iicared /iiabout /iithe /iiwrong /iiperson /iiall /iialong/i…

Samantha’s cruelty brought back a memory, when Sloane had first returned to the Rivers family. Back then, she’d gone out of her way to please everyone, trying so hard to fit in. Even when they ignored her, she neverined.

And yet, because of Samantha’s maniption, they had hurt Sloane again and again–until they’d pushed her to the brink.

What the heck did we do… Adrian whispered, a wave of remorse crashing over him.

When Sloane heard that Adrian hade to see her, she was surprised.

To avoid disturbing the others during practice, she stepped outside to meet him. Her expression was calm, and her tone was cool and even. “What do you want?”

Adrian opened his mouth, his voice rough and hoarse. “My dear sister, I came to apologize.”
