After walking a while, Lucas found a concealed spot and gently set Sloane down.

“Let’s take a break here. Eat something before we move on,” he said in a low voice.

Sloane nodded. Her body was still weak, but now wasn’t the time to act tough. She sat on a rock and gently rubbed her sore arm.

“You should rest too,” she said quietly. “You’ve been carrying me this whole time- you must be exhausted.”

Lucas shook his head and crouched down in front of her, eyes on her arm. “I’m fine. What about you? How’s the wound?”

Sloane looked down at it. “Still holding up. It didn’t reopen—just hurts a little.”

She pointed to his pack. “Hand me the bag. There should be some herbs inside.”

Lucas quickly pulled out the pouch and handed it to her.

Sloane guided him on how to prep them to maximize their effect.

Once he finished, Lucas carefully pressed the treated herbs onto her wound, speaking gently. “It might sting a little. Try to bear it.”

“Okay.” Sloane nodded faintly and lowered her gaze, watching him crouch in front of her. She could only see the top of his head, but something strange stirred in her chest.

It was an unfamiliar feeling–simr to how she’d once felt about her mentor, but… not quite the same.

Lucas worked as gently as he could, but she still flinched from the pain.

He immediately stopped and looked up at her, concern written all over his face, “Did I hurt you?”

Sloane forced a small smile. “No. Go ahead.”

Only then did he resume. When the wrapping was done, he lightly squeezed her hand.

“All set. Rest here a bit. I’ll go find us something to eat.”

Sloane watched his back as he walked away.

“Be careful,” she called after him.

Lucas nced over his shoulder and smiled. “I will.”

She watched his silhouette disappear into the woods.

Not long after, Lucas returned with some wild berries and a sk of clean water. He spotted her leaning back against a rock, eyes closed. Thinking she was asleep, he walked over quietly and set the fruit beside her.

But Sloane hadn’t fallen asleep at all. Hearing his footsteps, she slowly opened her

    eyes.

    “You’re back,” she said softly.

Lucas smiled. “Yeah. Found some berries. Eat something to fill your stomach.”

Sloane nodded and took one. The sweet juice spread through her mouth. She nced at him and asked, “You’re not eating?”

Lucas sat beside her and started organizing the leftover herbs. “I already had some while I was picking them.”

She didn’t question it and quickly finished all the fruit. Lucas crouched in front of her again, and she instinctively leaned forward, wrapping her arms around his

    neck.

They had been on the move for two days without running into any assassins, which likely meant Lucas’s diversion had worked. Their pursuers had gone off in the wrong direction.

The downtime gave Sloane a chance to recover. While they traveled, she gathered

Lucas also fed her all kinds of unfamiliar nts–every time she told him to try one first, he did so without hesitation.

Another day passed the same way. As usual, Lucas went off to search for food. But not long after he left, a faint rustling of footsteps came from the distance.

Sloane’s instincts kicked in. Her muscles tensed as she rose silently, hand reaching for the gun at her waist.

She ducked behind a boulder, held her breath, and stared in the direction of the sound, ready for anything.
