Sloane quickly snatched two more leaves and flicked her wrist–both leaves shot through the air like des, slicing toward the two assassins with a sharp gust.
They didn’t even have time to react. A sudden sting hit their wrists, and both of them dropped their guns on the spot.
One of them moved fast and bent down to grab his weapon, but Sloane was faster. At the same time sheunched the leaves, her vine came whipping forward.
Just as the assassin’s fingers brushed the gun, the vine snapped against the back of his hand with a loud crack, making him wince in pain.
Sloane seized the moment and used the vine to drag their weapons away.
Now disarmed and furious, the two men charged at her with bare hands.
Sloane bit back the pain from her wound and quickly retreated several steps, trying to create distance. She was still fast, but the injury in her arm kept her from moving at full strength. Every swing felt like fire tearing through her muscles–raw and brutal.
The assassins noticed her weakness immediately and pressed their advantage. One of them lunged at her, fist aimed straight at her abdomen.
She barely dodged it, but the other came around behind and kicked her hard in the back of the knee.
A sharp grunt escaped her lips as her legs gave out. She crashed to the ground, her forehead mming into a rock. Blood streamed down her face, but her mind stayed clear.
“Die, you bitch!” one of the assassins snarled. His de glinted coldly as he raised it high above her throat.
Sloane gritted her teeth and threw her knee up with everything she had left, mming it into his gut. He doubled over, and his grip faltered.

She rolled sideways, snatched up her short dagger, and drove it straight into his
chest.
His eyes widened, and he copsed without another word.
But the other assassin was already there. He kicked the dagger out of her hand before she could recover. Before she could even breathe, his fist mmed into her stomach.
Sloane bent over, coughing blood.
He didn’t stop. He grabbed a fistful of her hair and shoved her face into the dirt.
“You little b*tch. You killed my brothers–now I’m gonna make you pay.” He raised his de, ready to finish it.
Sloane had nothing left. Her limbs trembled, her strength drained. She couldn’t fight back anymore.
Just as the de was about toe down, a gunshot rang out, scattering the birds
overhead.
The assassin froze–then dropped like a stone.
A hole gaped in his forehead, blood blooming across his face.
Sloane opened her eyes and saw Lucas standing a short distance away, gun still smoking in his hand. His face was cold, jaw clenched tight, eyes full of fury and guilt.
“Sloane!” he rushed over, dropped to his knees, and gently pulled her into his arms. His voice shook. “I’m sorry. I should’ve been here.”
She managed a small smile, even through the pain. Her voice was soft, but steady. “You… made it back just in time.”
Lucas took in the blood and bruises on her body, and his heart clenched. His fists tightened. “I should’ve known better. I never should’ve left you alone.”

She leaned into his shoulder, breathing heavily. “But that shot definitely gave away our position. We need to leave. Now.”
“Right.” Lucas didn’t waste another second. He scooped her up and ran, not even pausing to bandage her wounds.
They had barely made it far when the lead assassin and his men caught up, blocking their path.
The man wiped the grime off his face, revealing a twisted grin. “Let’s see where you think you’re running now.”
